I spent about 9 1/2 years in the backcountry in the western U.S. when I was younger. I wintered out two winters with minimal shelter. I thought you toughed it out well, which, sometimes when you don't have time or energy to make a proper camp, is just how it goes. One suggestion I would make, if I may, is next time bring more fat to eat. A nice big chunk of sharp cheddar and a half stick of butter or some bacon would have been possible choices of mine if possible. The reason is because I have found that you can take a lot more cold if your body has ample fat to burn. Just my personal experience. The second year I wintered out I took a LOT of fat which I shared with my dog and we ate with our meat (which is of course mostly very lean in the wild) and we both did a lot better. Loved the canvas outer sleeping bag. That was my choice for outdoor winter camping because its so much safer around fire. I'm getting a bit long in the tooth for TOO much adventure these days. Good video. 👺

@Ryanoutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Well just because we haven't caught one doesn't mean there isn't one or a whole family. I have seen and heard weird things out in the woods and I couldn't tell you what it is could be the wind could be an animal just making a weird noise I don't know I'm not going to dismiss the possibility.

@@markcolby2927 Bigfoot is blurry, and that's the whole problem! It ain't the photographer's fault!! RIP Mitch Hedberg...
@ridesmule28242 жыл бұрын
@@markcolby2927 Quite honestly I don't think there is such a thing as bigfoot. I spent many years alone in the mountains and I either saw everything that lived there (and probably ate it) and/or found its bones. All of the hunters with scopes and rifles hunting every year, all the game cams, not one set of bones and not one kill or decent game cam photo, pretty much speaks for itself. Could I be wrong? It's theoretically possible but extremely unlikely. Just my opinion for what its worth. I am less afraid in the woods than I am on your average small town streets.

Nice to see a video that addresses the practical aspects of dealing with an emergency survival situation. So many so called “survival “ videos spend huge amounts of time building some sort of bushcraft shelter. In a true survival situation, you would freeze to death before the shelter was finished. The moral of the story is, carry a tarp, regardless of whether or not you plan to spend the night. If things happen to go sideways, it can save your life. Thanks for posting this.

Your video exposes the weaknesses of a tarp with the wind driven fine snow. If you had to do it again have you thought of how you could stop the snow blowing in. You sir have my deepest respect. Last time I camped out in weather that bad was back in '78. I had to dig a quinzee ( actually, more of a trench ) draped my tarp across it and punch a ventilation hole on the leeward side. Fire, now that was a challenge. To put this into context, I was 16 at the time. I reckoned, it was just like, well starting a fire. Something I was good at. Took me several tries just to get ignition and many, many trips of grabbing what ever dead wood was nearby. I hadn't learned the art of processing wood yet, but I knew you start out small, build up to big. Anyways, to make this a short story, I ended up with a decent "fire pit". So come the morning... end result: The blizzard buried my quinzee camp except for two things. My ventilation hole, turned into a ventilation shaft. And the fire kept the entrance clear.

While stationed at Minot, N. D. while at one of our sites. I was a supervisor. The heating at the site was not working hardly at all. I slept in back bedroom, and another very cold night. So cold I slept dressed and in a sleeping bag. Cold of - 40 not uncommon. Thanks retired and old, but dues paid.

You know many of these blizzard campouts look like fun. Kinda like I'd like to be there. You've cured me of that. Thanks.

Thank you for being a bad ass and ACTUALLY camping in a blizzard as opposed to all these channels with guys talking about "camping" in a blizzard when they really just sit in a customized heated van playing video games on a flatscreen LOL

Hello from Winnipeg. :). Just watched this awesome video with my 11 year old daughter. She grabbed a blanket and stared. Kept asking why lol. We had a good discussion about fires, sleeping bags and shelters. Thank you for being part of a good learning experience. New subscriber!!
