if your truck has ABS don't pump your brakes, that's the whole idea of the ABS and it can apply and release the brakes a lot faster than anyone's leg can. It pulsates the brake off and on so fast it sounds like somethings grinding.
@92clintonr
@92clintonr 2 жыл бұрын
You still can't steer when you hold the brakes even with abs. If you just hold your brakes while you slide you willl go in a straight line and not the way your steering. Just because you have abs doesn't mean you can just push you pedal down, hold it there, and expect to have a controlled stop everytime.
@MystikalDawn
@MystikalDawn 2 жыл бұрын
@@92clintonr That makes no sense whatsoever, ABS (Antilock Braking System) prevents a skid by keeping the wheels from locking up. Why the hell would you pump your brake when that is exactly what the ABS is doing itself in a much faster more efficient way??? Your quote "Just because you have abs doesn't mean you can just push you pedal down, hold it there, and expect to have a controlled stop" that's exactly what ABS is for, it takes that job away from the driver so they can simply hold the pedal down and focus on maintaining control of the vehicle.
@92clintonr
@92clintonr 2 жыл бұрын
@@MystikalDawn Where did I say pump your brakes? I said you can't hold them down. I live in Northern Canada working remote jobs farther north than you can imagine. I know how to drive when you're sliding. Your vehicle does not properly steer if you just hold the brakes and never let them go. It's ok though, I don't need to argue with you. I've sat in the passenger seat many times with people who drive with your mentality and watched them crash in an easily avoidable accident simply because they froze and just locked their brakes. Good day.
@92clintonr
@92clintonr 2 жыл бұрын
@@MystikalDawn If you're trying to panic stop in a straight line then yes, hit your brakes and let abs take over. If you're sliding in the snow or rain you will not properly steer while abs is active.
@MystikalDawn
@MystikalDawn 2 жыл бұрын
@@92clintonr As long as the vehicle is not spinning madly out of control to the point ABS can't help you then yes, ABS will allow you to steer in the snow or rain while braking when sliding, I'm a journeyman mechanic by trade, began working in the trade 10 years ago. I know exactly how ABS works and what it's for. Not only that we get that much snow and ice where I live here in Canada we put salt on the roads, so believe me I know exactly what ABS is and I know exactly how it does what it's supposed to do.

I grew up in the extreme SE corner of Minnesota, aka the other part of the state with hills. Except the roads are hilly and curvy. Welcome to the Driftless Region. Obviously, we don’t get lake condition blizzards. When weather is predicted, you make a calm trip to the store to get a few groceries and then just plan to stay home if it gets really bad. So, when do we explain to people that when the temps slide deep into the negative, that we leave a sink running to prevent frozen pipes?

I will just say that 99.9% of newer cars these days have ABS which will negate the "pumping of the breaks"...Not sure why its taught anymore. If your car has ABS, DO NOT PUMP YOUR BREAKS, your car will do it for you. Please just understand your vehicle and the world will be a better place

@@chucknorris8783 while this can be true, if all four wheels loose traction and lock up then the ABS control can "think" the vehicle is stationary and not pulse the brakes. So sometimes it's necessary to do it yourself.

I’m regards to your tip on pumping brakes to slow down on ice, that was the way to do it on pre ABS (anti lock brake system) vehicles because if you just hammered down on your brake pedal you would lock up the brakes and go into a skid thus losing control. You DO NOT want to pump the brakes if your vehicle has ABS as the system already prevents brake lockup. Pretty sure anything made after 2000 has a good chance of having ABS. Just wanted to share from a fellow winter weather driver (Canadian 👍😁). Cheers!

Storytime..... When I was 20 something, many years ago I spent a couple years commuting 2 hours to Nursing School, winter included. Being a Canadian you get familiar pretty quickly with the hazards of winter driving so I had the studded winter tires, AWD, and my trusty Emergency kit in the trunk with everything I might need if stranded...I felt safe, and prepared..,.. haha! One small inexpensive detail changed all of that one particular day exactly like this one. WINDSHIELD WIPERS Word of advice for winter drivers..It doesn't matter if you've got all the winter bells, and whistles if you cant see out of your windshield.... When you put your winter tires on every year make sure to upgrade those wipers or you'll spend more time stopping on a dangerous slippery highway to scrape ice off than you will driving!... Many people are killed each winter doing that very thing...

The Bible says in John 3:16-36 that whoever believes in the Lord Jesus Christ shall not perish but have everlasting life, the Bible also says in Romans 10:9 that those who declare with their mouth that Jesus Christ is their God, Lord, and Savior they shall be saved. Revelation 1:8 says that Jesus is the alpha and the omega. Luke and revelation is the ending times, and Jesus is returning back. So are you going to submit your life to him or no? Narrow is the path that leads to the gates of heaven, but only few people find it. The gates that is the path to destruction is where many people find it! Jesus loves you SO MUCH! That he died on the cross, and was resurrected from the dead 3 days later to give us eternal life.

For those who don’t drive in snow much you don’t want to pump the brakes you want to slowly press the brake, let off then slowly press them repeat. You don’t want to hit your brakes enough to lock up the wheels cuz when you do that guess what happens, you slide. ABS was designed so you don’t have to pump brakes but you will still slide with abs. Pumping the brakes is almost the same as holding the brakes it just intermittently locks up the wheels, you will slide then roll slide then roll, it’s definitely better than holding them but barely pushing the brakes and slowing down the wheels without stopping them is the best way! Driving slower helps too!

I remember coming home from work and it was very misty out, or foggy. Also the temperature had dropped to under 34°. It wasn't raining or snowing yet, just very "humid", moisture in the air. Before my ramp there's a dip down and in front of me there were three cars. One fishtailed left, the other right, and the third went into a spin. The dip had ice all over the place. My foot instinctively went to the brake, tapped at but I slid a bit. I took my foot off and held on going straight past my off ramp. I would never had made it. I didn't touch the gas or the brake. Just coasted slowly through the ice and made it through. The other cars were fine, no one was hurt. But that small patch of ice could have caused a massive pile up. Never SLAM on your brakes! There was an instance where 25+ cars crashed as well as semi trucks and yes people died. Be SAFE AND BE CAREFUL!
