Thanks for another great video. You did the right thing by going to the cabin the week before. The main point is to have fun and to enjoy some family time, which you did in the cabin. Then you did the hike the next week, so you, Sarah, and Dinali has more quality time together. I liked Sarah's projector. Keep hiking!

sintax77: Sara found a nice little cottage. Sara: It's a cabin.. What are we in Europe? That's so weird. I JUST looked up the difference between these two an hour ago, and found that yeah.. Cabins are more like I imagine what you can find in the US wilderness, and cottages were more European.

Nice trip, I'm gonna have to check out this area myself. Have you considered GMRS HT radios? $35 for a 10yr family lic. with no test. Plenty of power for outdoor activities and Wouxun has several weather resistant HTs with weather and SHTF listening bands. Our group always has several HTs on hand for every hike.

You did good to have the tarp. It gives you comfort and flexibility that the tent, alone, could not. I love tarps and carry one with my tent, a Zpack duplex with a dynema tarp. Both are so light that their weight I can carry. Kentucky This is my second view, a year later. Still glad to see the tarp/tent setup. I had three daughters and a wife that didn’t care for camping…so I tried encouraging them toward gentle camping, big tent, bigger tarps, big enough to cover the picnic table and the truck, then a second tarp for the tent porch very close to the picnic table. Yes, it was a big deal to setup, diagonal ridge 15 feet high, 7 feet high on the low side…long guy lines. We only did day hikes in the Smokies. It worked; the daughters grew up liking the outdoors. Their mom and I retired on the Little River, coming out of the mountains. This very moment, I’m watching geese floating down the river and the sun is beautiful. We retired in the East Tennessee mountains. I have enjoyed your hiking for years now. You’re a real celebrity, now. Thanks for sharing.

59 min in, putting out fire and coals; you can use a lot less water and stir it around with a stick. That did look pretty effective, but using the water to separate the units of heat and fuel, and then mixing them with a stick, then adding a bit more water, is even more effective, and uses less water. - It's just another kind of mud pie to get into making.

From W4GSM, great looking river at the camp sight, wonder if there were any native trout. Get a larger battery for the H.T. they really use lots of power if transmitting. If you can program those H.T.s you have half the battle won. The first HAM TICKET is very easy and mountain topping is fun. Much to learn and it is a very big hobby, but only if you really want to. Love your videos. Dave.

Getting the technician license is really easy... there's a bunch of apps that prepare you for it. I read a book and practiced the test with the apps, but it was overkill. I got the same setup as you with the Baofeng radio and the collapsible antenna. I usually end up programming the radio with CHIRP with all of the NWS radio stations, and ranger towers in the area a few other local repeaters, and then the simplex frequencies.

You should try mayo instead of butter. Easy to spread on the bread and since mayo contains oil, it is self lubricating in the pan. It also creates a great crust. Just to clarify, you put mayo on the outer sides of the grilled cheese.

AS an experienced hiker I have a question. Since my time on the AT will be finite, should I try to pack all my food to minimize days in to resupply towns? just looking for some thoughts on the subject.
