My brother worked at a fire tower at Barr Hill in Ms. I remember running up and down the steps when I was a teenager. Now I'm in a nursing home. Enjoy the trip down memory lane! Sure miss it.

Silly idea for you. Carry a few extra walmart or even bread bags with you. If your going to be in areas of mud and water you can put the on your feet before you put on your boots. The bags will help keep your feet dry if your boots develop leaks. Used to do that when ice fishing in the winter just in case I accidentally stepped in a deep puddle on the ice or an open ice fishing hole.

@@sintax77 my grandpa taught me that. It saved my feet as a kid many times. I would do what was called running tip ups ( running to a tip up in a hole whose flag was up indicating a fish was on the line and needed to be pulled up before the fish got off) and many times would run all day long and sometimes there would be an in or two of water under fresh snow on the ice.

Smart move in turning around and avoiding the water crossing in such cold conditions. What I always like about your videos is that, unfortunately, things quite often go wrong, one way or another, whether it is a forgotten piece of gear or missing a turn at a trail junction, etc., and as a true hiker/backpacker you just adapt and roll with the punches to make the best of your adventure. In fact, making do and adapting is a real part of the adventure for all of us. This was another great vid and as always, I look forward to your next posting. Another great video dude...That washed out trail is why I started carrying 55 gallon garbage bags in my pack. They weigh nothing and take up very little room. In that situation you could put one over each leg, tie them up at the top with paracord and keep your pants/boots dry while crossing knee deep water. On the 2 occasions I had to use them they were invaluable

That was one crazy, scary 😨 trip. It's cool watching trips in icy conditions but so hate feeling cold. That watchtower and the broken window letting in the hectic wind and weather would have been the end for me. Glad you enjoyed it and all future adventures.

At 10:09 the first mountain you pointed to is Mt. Equinox, the second is Dorset peak. Sorry I don’t intentionally want to be “that” guy lol. They are very close in height, Equinox spans a much wider area. I’ve lived here all my life and traveled prospect trail 🙂. Cool to see my neck of the woods 😎

Excellent adventure Sintax! You always know how to make a bad situation fun to watch. In the future look into Seal Skinz waterproof socks to throw in your pack as an insurance the dreaded broken boot fiasco and ingress of water and bitterly miserable cold feet. Why not next trip throw together what you think is the perfect campfire cheeseburger. It's a little more complicated than tossing water in a bag but I have always wondered what kind of burger you choose after a hike so why not make a couple of doubles and show the world your campfire cooking skillz. Love Vermont and the AT/LT. Had lunch at Prospect Rock and loved that view of the Equinox. That tower always in the wind it seems! Lol. But it’s inspiring to know that was the beginning of what we enjoy today! Thanks for keeping it real with the coffee and having to backtrack! It will make the coffee that much better when you get to enjoy it! Memory coffee! PS. Thanks for showing the hammock hang in the upper shelter. I have only done it once to keep bugs out but didn’t hang, simply used it as a bicycle on the floor.

Agree! Usually we have quite a bit of snow on the ground (Eden) what little we had is gone and just some black ice left on the driveway. Don't even think we will have a white Xmas if the weather keeps this way. People seem to think it's great to not have the snow but they will wish we had it when wells run dry in the summer! @@gregorywilkerson2042 no not this summer. We had enough rain that it was fine. As long as you have a deep we'll you should be fine. I'd try to move before Thanksgiving if I were you. There will be snow on the ground by then. And Depending on where you are moving it could be a lot. Last year we had a lot of super cold days. Wind chills -25 to -30. But it's a beautiful place to live and no one will bother you. Good luck!

As always, I enjoyed your video. I must admit I was a little worried about you up in that fire tower, built in the 30's. It was so windy; I was glad for you to leave there, except you had to come down those steps in the dark. Thankfully you made it ok. I've been to Stratton Pond a few times. When it rains, the trails become very wet and muddy. Wise idea to turn around. Last time I was there a few years ago, my friend had planned a route out that had a section similar to your dead end stream crossing, but we were able to make it across without getting too wet. We did, however, have to bust through brush on a very overgrown trail where the vegetation was so thick that in many places we couldn't see where we were putting our feet. It was late summer, and with the rain pouring down on our way in, and having to bust through wet brush on our way out, I nicknamed the area the Lyme Disease Wilderness Area. Luckily, we didn't pick up any ticks. Permethrin is great stuff!

It’s fun seeing you go places I’ve been. Your trip was my first backpacking trip. We opted to stay on the care-takers tent platform, since there wasn’t a care-taker there. I wanted to use my tent since I carried it in. The pond is an awesome place to watch the sun go down. Thanks for the content!

Imagine being in that fire tower during a thunderstorm. Personnel that manned those fire towers would have to stand/sit on wooden stools with glass insulators on the stools feet to protect them from electrocution from direct lightning strikes to the tower. They still follow that method to this day in the few that are still in service.

I have done Lyebrook to Bourn Pond twice so far and been to the falls once, on a separate trip, parking at the main parking lot. The parking area you were at, and hike you did , gives me another option when I return to VT hopefully next year. Thank you for sharing.

Not a hard spot to find .when u are on 30 and went through town it on the left befor going up to the big parking lot . And as you can see you can drive up to the top and park but he did not . Its a seasonal road and not maintained. The road is used a lot . Just map it . Rootvalle road .

Another great hike, this was the first year in about 5 years that I didn't backpack on Thanksgiving but I'm planning trip a few days before Christmas or maybe after, not sure yet. Sucks you forgot your stove, I always carry a titanium fire box on every trip just in case I run out of fuel, I also carry a coffee cup so I can heat water for coffee on one stove and heat water with the firebox

I always shove my boots to the bottom of my sleeping bag. I always use a rectangle down bag just for that reason. Room for my boots and the dry overnite! Also, put your freeze dried dinner in your jacket while it rehydrates. It will stay warmer and so will you!!

Long time fan. Love the videos with shelters not just a hammock pitched in the middle of nowhere, those camps are a bit boring. In the western mountains these shelters are non existent and illegal. East coast has some many of these old timey shelters scattered out in the woods.

Told my wife at the beginning of the video, I bet he night hikes at least once. I bet he forgets at least 1 important item. And, I bet he bushwacks to get back to the trail at least once. Eh, 2 out of 3 wasn't too bad. I did think for a minute you would find a way to bushwack around that mess but was happy to see you make a liar out of me. You definitely made the right choice on that one. On camera it looked like there might have been a way across but one false solid spot and in the drink you would have been in those temperatures. Fire tower looked like fun. I'm sure it was saying a little. Anyways, thanks for another awesome video! We really enjoyed it!

@@sintax77 I'm sure it was worse in person. Had something similar happen to me in Alaska. Was out in the back country with some friends. Spent a few nights and started hiking back out. Temps had warmed up quite a bit the last 2 days. The little stream we had crossed coming in was now a river about 25 feet across and about 3 feet deep. Luckily, had enough service to get a message out. Waited a few hours for someone to bring a raft. And even with that it was a little on the sketchy side.

Wow man...you deserved that cheeseburger for sure. I love backpacking but I havent been for a long time. I hated hiking in wet boots( old scool trick to keep warm and dry are plastic bags between your socks and boots. It also helps keep feet warmer too). Also didnt mind getting snowed or rained on but definitely needed the fire to recover
