Could you compare west german and east german silos one day? Also - imagine being able to do a SERE challenge in an area like this. The pre-capture mission will be interesting. Would like to see you do the overnighter.

I'd love to do a challenge overseas but it will have to be on either private land or a military base

Hi Mr. Grunt and welcome to my Home Area. The Place in Wackernheim was part of the Air Defence for the Mainz and Wiesbaden Area ( Nike ist a SAM, not a Nuke). Back in the days, parts of the 1st Armored Division stayed at Mainz-Gonsenheim and in Mainz-Mombach we're the Workshops for the Tanks. If you are interested in more historical Things in this Area, Just contact me . Greets.

Nike site near me were SAMs, yes, but they had low (ish) yield nuke warheads on them to take out whole Soviet Bomber formations.
@Ragnar-yq6kf15 күн бұрын
I knew that the Nike or a later versin got the Option for an nuklear warhead so bläst Russian Bomber Formations, but I never heard that those warheads was storaged at Finthen Airfield or in Wackernheim. If you have informations about that, it will be very intersting for me as an Hobby historican. Thanks a lot.

Was on Nike site mid'80's, Blankenheim. Nuclear head on it. The missile was under control of us, Belgian, nuclear head under supervision of U.S.

Nike missiles were anti-aircraft. My father was a Commander of Nike sights outside Loring Air base in Northern Maine the late 50's. The ammo bunkers looked just like the ones I had to tour when I was on guard duty in Germany in the 60's.

That was my backyard! Stationed at McCully Barracks from 85-88 with 1/59 ADA, 8th Infantry Division. The airfield next door at Finthen Army Airfield had the usual army aircraft such as Blackhawks, Cobras and Kiowas. Our Stinger platoon would go there once a quarter to practice engaging aircraft (simulated) at the MTS (Moving Target Simulator. We also used the MOUT (Military Operations on Urbanized Terrain) a couple of times. Thanks for sharing and the memories!

I was stationed on top of a mountain with an MI unit near the Fulda Gap for 2 and a half years. Detachment Schneeberg. One of two MPs between '86- and 89. Rotated home 6 months before the Berlin Wall fell. Cold as crap in the winter. When Germans call a mountain Snow Mountain, you it's bad....

In the late 80's early 90's, I was in the reconnaissance platoon in Vicenza. I remember we spent the night in an abandoned Nike missile silo. I can't recall what country we were in, but I remember it being in the mountains. It was freezing cold. It was so cold and dry many of us woke up with bloody noses. There were still personal items left from the missile crews, books etc. It was quite interesting.

I did cold weather training in Folgoria near Passo Coe and was a former Nike missile site we stayed at. The "barracks" was a former storage/hanger/warehouse. Cold weather training was later moved to Pontebba 92. When I came back in 95 it was done in Bosnia at Tuzla. 😂 Be safe brother! Ciao..🥃🍻🪂🫡🇺🇸

Cool video. My first enlistment was in West Germany from 1985-1988 as a Pershing missile crewman (nuclear) with B 3/84FA and B 4/9FA at Badenerhof Kaserne in Heilbronn. Our site was just outside of town at Waldheide/Camp Waldheide/Camp Redleg.

A couple towns over from where I grew up there were multiple Nike sites. The closer one had the missiles on the hill and the radar site a half mile or so away down the hill. You can see them under construction in 1955 on the aerial photo sites. Apparently they had nukes there.

Willkommen zurück mal wieder in Deutschland. Welcome back to Germany. Pls tell your government to retreat all military forces from german property. :) Honestly, a lot of germans don't want to see the american oppression any more. We are free people and we want to be treated equally!!! Besides that, you are a formidable man and teacher.

Would be cool to go back there with a metal detector. Find some old decent steel and make a knife out of it. You could go forged in fire or use modern shop tools. Would just be cool to make a knife out of some old steel, especially if you have not done it before. 🗡
