I've seen a couple other videos talking about how the dark room feature helps keep the tent a little cooler, which is nice. Our Weathermaster tents definitely have a "greenhouse effect" with the rainfly on if we don't keep them in a shaded area.

Hi Christopher! 🥰 Thanks for the input! And yeah I should have probably tested the dark room feature better, but I did find it cooler as well! Most other tents will have that "greenhouse" effect, at least that's what I've noticed too.

Nice thorough review! I choose this over the Ozark Trail 6 Person Dark Rest because it looks a little better in ventilation and privacy too. The blackout looks better on Ozark Trail Dark Rest, but I don't think that matters too much for me. I think more air flow than blacking out will help with lower temperatures. Which of the two you think has the better balance for staying cool?
@CampingGuidance Жыл бұрын
Hey Kevin! Thanks for letting me know which one you decided to go for! 😊 Hmm, if there's not too much of a price difference, I'd go with this Coleman Dark Room. It has much better rain protection than the Ozark Trail, and the quality tends to be better. I think perhaps you're right, the Coleman looks better for privacy, and I think ventilation for the 2 might be about the same? I don't have the Ozark though, so I'm basing all this on the looks of it hahaha. I hope this helps! 😊

Great review as always. I must have watched all of the Coleman tent reviews. Quick question - I am planning to take my 5 year old + 2 year old + wife camping over the summer. Because the younger one still naps, would you recommend the dark room tents? I have my eyes on both the SkyDome and the Carlsbad 8 person tent and not sure which one to choose. It does seem like thr SkyDome dark room gets darker but it doesn't have the screen room. I figured the extra screen on the Carlsbad can act as another shield against bugs. Please let ke kno what you think. Thanks!

Thank you so much!! It really means a lot to me that you binge watched my videos, thank you! 🥰 I do like the dark room tents myself, particularly this sundome! I'm not a big fan of the Carlsbad cos when it rains, all the water gets in the screen room, which is a pain to clean up. unless you're going to set up a tarp, then it's a good pick! Amazing Video. I like the way you reviewed the tent and found that you did hit almost every question that I had. The one question that wasn't answered with your video is: Is this something that I can use in the snow? One suggestion I do have is that I personally believe that the rain test would be more of an accurate simulation if it lasted an hour or two. However, I understand that it can be waste of water to have it running for 2 hours, so it's not a big deal. All in all, great video. :)
@CampingGuidance Жыл бұрын
Hi Steve! Thank you so much for your comment and feedback, I really appreciate it 😊 I'm really glad that you liked this video! And sadly I don't camp anytime out of summer (it's only ever summer where I am), so I couldn't do a snow test, but that's definitely a very valid point! Hmm, I'm not sure if this tent can be used in the snow though. 2 of the walls of this tent are just mesh (which is great for ventilation), but I'm pretty sure it can let in quite a bit of cold. I'd recommend getting a tent with less mesh + a full rainfly (like the REI Base Camp), which would definitely help with the cold. That's more of a 3+ season tent. I think Coleman tents tend to be more of just 3 season tents (not 3+). Also, thank you for the feedback on the rain test! I tried to put it through natural thunderstorms but it was so dry during my testing period, so I opted for a hose test instead, and I didn't wanna waste too much water haha XD But yes! I totally understand that a 1-2 hour rain test would be much better. I'll do my best to try to achieve that for future tents 😊 Hope this helped!

Would you prefer this or the 6 person Carlsbad tent? I'm torn as I like the simple straightforward nature of this tent, plus the smaller footprint. However, I do think that extra sunroom would be good for leaving muddy shoes and a cooler out there, perhaps my bike as well.
@CampingGuidance2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Tom! Hmmm if you're willing to buy extra tarps or a canopy for the screen room (to stop the rain from getting in), then I'd go with the Carlsbad. Otherwise, I'd pick this tent because I also really like the straightforward nature of this tent, and it's easier to clean too. 😊 The Carlsbad was a little difficult to clean especially after rain!

I might have missed it. With it being a darker material to help “block out” sunlight. Does this help keep the tent cooler or heat up more???

Cooler! But only by at most 1-2 degrees. Nothing crazy. It's not like it'll be super cool inside while it's scorching outside. But from my testing, 1-2 degrees cooler than a tent without the dark room.

Great video as all of the ones I have watched that you have done. I'm really thinking of getting a sundome 6 person tent. I'm not sure what model. It seems they all leak. I wonder if sealing the seams would stop all the leaks. That might be an idea for a video. Take some tents that leaked and seal the seams and see if there is enough improvement to make the time spent a good investment.

Thanks for the comment and suggestion Mike! 😊 And yes they definitely do work once you seal the seams yourself. Hi Mike! Thanks for the question! 😊 Hmm I haven't had time to thoroughly test the SkyDome yet and mull it over (my review on that will probably only be out in a couple weeks), but I think at the moment I'm leaning towards the SkyDome because it has a little bit more headroom and livable space inside the tent than the Sundome. @@CampingGuidance Hi again! I actually bought the 4 person SkyDome dark room today . I broke a tent pole clip within 2 minutes after getting it out of the bag. Those clips are an unbelievably cheap, thin, plastic material. I went ahead and finished setup though in my apartment. I thought it was small for being a 4 person tent overall. Anyway, I took it back to the store and got the same tent in a 6 person version. (Just going to be really careful with the clips now) lol. I love the 6 person one a lot! Super roomy and dark. I bought the fresh and black 3 person last month. That was my first time Camping. It was ok I guess, but I quickly realized I like big tents with tons of room . Next week it's supposed to get cooler. 60s and 40s for lows so I'm anxious to try out with my northface 40s sleeping bag and electric heater. Look forward to seeing your review when you make one. @@CampingGuidance thank you!! I have 2 more 1) In your other videos you test the Columbia Mammoth Creeks. For two beginner campers, who're desert camping with high winds, would you recommend the Columbia or the Coleman? Does the Columbia seal shut all mesh windows for dust? We'll likely get the 8 or 6 person version to hold up against the winds. And 2) Would exped mattresses on the tent floor work fine (no mobility issues), or would you recommend a cot over a mattress? Learning so much from your videos, you're the best. Happy 4th!

@@maliciousinferno 1) Hmm, to be honest, I've never gone desert camping, sadly there aren't any deserts near me! :( But if you're expecting high winds I'd recommend staying away from cabin tents (Columbia) and budget tents (Coleman). But to answer your question, yes, the Columbia does seal shut all the mesh windows, there aren't any mesh panels like the Coleman! 2) As for the Exped, that's how I typically use it too! hahaha I just leave it on the floor and sleep on it, it's comfy enough for me. For God's sake! Shipping to Brazil is very expensive.

Hi Macêdo, thanks for the comment! And yeah sadly I have the same problems as well when shipping to Asia. I typically don't use Amazon's own shipping, if I need to, I use a shipping forwarder to forward my parcels from the US to my hometown.

Great review, Lose the mask …

@Moonlight Thank you so much! 😊 And yup I've moved away from the mask for all my recent videos haha. But just to clarify I used to only wear it because I was camera-shy. Left a note at the beginning of each video to let others know. I hope this clarifies! 😊

Really stop saying the name of the item 15 times. We know what you are talking about! Otherwise very informative.

Thanks for the feedback David! I’m glad you liked the info anyway 😊 sorry about that though, I have a little bit of a background in blogging and that’s what we were taught to do previously, to repeat the name enough times that google knows what your article is about 🤣🤣🤣 so I made my KZbin videos following my blog posts. But I think I’ve slowly stopped saying the name too many times! Think the biggest improvements were in my latest videos 😁
