OEM Cam position sensor MOPAR 5149054AC
The P0340 code indicates a camshaft position sensor “A” circuit malfunction. It's mainly caused by a faulty camshaft position sensor and circuit problems. Some of its symptoms include an illuminated check engine light, engine stalling, rough running, and more.
Replacing the camshaft position sensor (CMP) on a 5.7L HEMI engine involves several steps. Here's a general guide on how to do it:
Tools and materials needed:
New camshaft position sensor MOPAR 5149054AC
Ratchet and socket set (10mm)
Torque wrench
Screwdriver (if necessary)
Shop towels or rags
Penetrating oil (if necessary)
Needle nose pliers
Procedure:
Locate the sensor: The camshaft position sensor is typically located near the top of the engine, on the front or rear cylinder head, depending on the specific vehicle model. Consult your vehicle's service manual or documentation to locate the sensor.
Prepare the area: Before starting any work, make sure the engine is cool to the touch. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent any electrical mishaps. Clean the area around the sensor to prevent debris from falling into the engine.
Remove the sensor: Use a ratchet and socket set to remove any components obstructing access to the sensor, such as engine covers or air intake components. Once the sensor is accessible, disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the release tab and pulling it away from the sensor. Then, use a ratchet and socket to remove the mounting bolt(s) securing the sensor in place. Carefully remove the sensor from the engine block or cylinder head.
Install the new sensor: Compare the new sensor with the old one to ensure they match. Apply a small amount of engine oil or grease to the O-ring or seal of the new sensor to aid in installation and create a better seal. Carefully insert the new sensor into the mounting hole, aligning it properly. Hand-tighten the mounting bolt(s) to secure the sensor in place.
Reconnect electrical connector: Push the electrical connector onto the new sensor until it clicks into place. Make sure it is securely attached.
Reassemble: If you removed any components to access the sensor, reinstall them in the reverse order of removal. Make sure all bolts and fasteners are tightened to the manufacturer's specifications using a torque wrench.
Reconnect the battery: Once everything is reassembled, reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
Test the sensor: Start the engine and monitor for any warning lights or abnormal behavior. Take the vehicle for a test drive to ensure everything is functioning correctly.
Clear trouble codes (if necessary): If you had any trouble codes related to the camshaft position sensor before replacement, use an OBD-II scanner to clear them from the vehicle's computer.
The camshaft position sensor (CMP) plays a crucial role in the engine management system of a vehicle equipped with a HEMI engine. It detects the position of the camshaft(s) and sends this information to the engine control module (ECM), which uses it to determine fuel injection timing and ignition timing. When the CMP sensor fails or malfunctions, it can cause various symptoms, including:
Check Engine Light (CEL): A faulty camshaft position sensor often triggers the check engine light on the dashboard. The ECM detects a problem with the sensor's signal and illuminates the CEL to alert the driver.
Engine Misfires: Incorrect camshaft position data can lead to misfires in the engine cylinders. This can result in rough idling, hesitation, or stumbling during acceleration.
Poor Engine Performance: The ECM relies on camshaft position data to calculate fuel injection timing and ignition timing. A malfunctioning CMP sensor can cause incorrect timing, resulting in poor engine performance, reduced power, and decreased fuel efficiency.
Hard Starting or No Start: If the CMP sensor fails completely, the ECM may not receive any camshaft position signal. This can lead to difficulty starting the engine or even prevent it from starting altogether.
Stalling: In some cases, a failing camshaft position sensor may cause the engine to stall unexpectedly, especially during idle or low-speed driving.
Engine Surging: Erratic camshaft position data can cause the engine speed to fluctuate or surge randomly, even when the throttle position remains constant.
Loss of Acceleration: Incorrect camshaft position information can result in delayed throttle response and a noticeable loss of acceleration, particularly under load or during heavy acceleration.
Reduced Fuel Efficiency: Engine timing discrepancies caused by a faulty CMP sensor can lead to inefficient fuel combustion, resulting in decreased fuel efficiency and increased fuel consumption.

@MrGrandc123 hey there, intermittent no wide open throttle, stumble on hard acceleration and intermittent engine light. Ran for a month then found out the camshaft solenoid went. Hope this helps!
