I spend roughly $40-$50 per week on groceries for 2 people as a "broke college student" just shopping from smart & final and we eat well. It can be done, I'm not even stingy. The thing with the dollar store is that they portion them so small its more cost efficient to buy the whole thing at a normal store. You can get a pack of 5 normal chicken breasts for 6-7 bucks instead of buying like 1/3 of a breast for $1. Same with the tilapia. Bacon may have been a good deal, can't attest to that.

carsondrum yeah, meat is not worth buying at Dollar Tree. Rice, dry beans, 24-ounce pasta, some about-to-expire things (like cereal, canned fish, mayonnaise, etc.) that Dollar Tree got on the cheap - buy those. Egyptian strawberry or raspberry jam are a bit heavy on the sugar but pretty good. Frozen meat, no.

I've gotten plenty of salmon from the dollar tree that didn't smell fishy; it's likely the piece you got was thawed and refrozen; quality control isn't exactly at the top of the list of priorities for the typically understaffed stores with minimum-wage employees. Also, the first ingredient on those burgers is textured soy protein. They're mostly not meat.

You know, I often say the same thing about marinated meat. I typically don’t buy it because it’s usually a cheaper marinade and the meat is old. But I have found exceptions, one in particular was a pack of Souvlaki I bought that wound up tasting absolutely fantastic. Maybe you should do a sequel to this where you buy a collection of pre-marinated meats from any grocery store and put it to the test to see if there are any exceptions to the rule in your area. Something might surprise you as the Souvlaki did with me.
