If you watch my other videos then you know “yes” it’ll tow just fine, with Toyota’s TSC system (trailer sway control) Here’s few things when you tow: 1. put it in “S” Mode, without ECT power on 2. Break controller 3. Weight distributing hitch 4. Scan gauge (monitor the transmission temperature) 5. Wireless rear camera

Been pulling with a Tacoma for years. You’ll be fine. Get tow rated air bags on the rear end. Helps stabilize while towing and keeps the truck and camper level. Make sure you have the sway bars too. If come to the US you’ll see Tacoma’s pulling a lot of campers. Don’t worry, it will be fine. Make sure you use your ECT when towing

@LetsGoChamp power is usually not the biggest issue. Weight/size of your vehicle will determine how well a trailer feels and tows. You should have a weight distribution hitch for sure and you should be okay. Handling is your biggest concern, 5.7 make great power it will pull that weight no issues.

Factory tow weight ratings are figured with a trailer that has minimal wind resistance, such as firewood on a utility trailer. The wind resistance of a travel trailer at highway speeds will reduce that max tow rating by a solid 30%

My Rv is a Jayco XJ 213 at 5000 lbs. my tow vehicle at the time was a Honda Ridgeline with a 5000 Lb tow capacity. I can say it did it but did struggle definitely during the hills and mountains and my mileage went from 26 to 3 mpg. I up graded to a Toyota Tundra V8 iforc What a big difference it made. The taco will do it but not as safe as it should be. The salesman should have advised you to a smaller travel trailer. Please be safe out there.

I have a 2020 Tacoma Sport using a Husky Anti Sway Hitch set up. I tow a Forest River Flagstaff Micro Lite 21FBRS with an unloaded weight of 4171lbs, tongue weight of about 412 lbs. All these weights are without any of our stuff loaded. We carry about 900 lbs of stuff, between clothes, food, tools, outdoor chairs and such which pushes the amount we tow in the neighborhood of 5000 lbs. My Tacoma handles it ok, we just completed a cross-country trip of about 6100 miles. Only a couple minor issues with our "Travel Hut" which will be addressed this week. Our gas mileage averaged about 10mpg thru a variety of highways. We did find that using the transmission in the "S" mode instead of the "D" mode, it keeps the RPMs steady cruising around 2500 and avoids the continual downshifting from overdrive to climb hills and such. It will be a little bumpy and you will have a little sway, ESPECIALLY if an 18 wheeler passes you or flies by on a two lane in the other direction. There will be some sway and if its windy, a suggestion would be KEEP THE SPEED DOWN. We plan on another cross-country trip in 2021 and will use the knowledge to make sure we have relatively smooth sailing. Enjoy your RV along with the fun and memories you will share with your family

You are over weight. Your max payload is less than 1000 pounds, trailer weight 4300 pounds plus another 800 for gear equals 5100 pound, 10% tongue weight (500 lbs) only leaves you about 500 lbs for passengers and gear in the truck. You are likely also over on max tongue weight but more importantly you’re probably over on GVCWR. I owned one of these trucks and towed a tent trailer that only weight 3500lbs...it struggled. I wouldn’t suggest taking this setup into the mountains, sorry my man but you will be a danger on the road.

On average people tow RVs 2 to 3 times a year so if you can handle wasting more gas and struggling up hill from time to time towing a RV than why upgrade to a bigger truck that already wastes 12-18mpg daily? It’s funny that people always make comments about a Tacoma pulling a smaller RV under 22ft but yet those same people only take out their RVs 2-4 times a year and act like they need a huge powerful truck to tow a smaller RV just 2-3 times a year 🤦🏽‍♂️

yes you can two a 4300 pound travel trailer with your Tacoma. I towed a friends 6000 pound trailer with my 13 Tacoma. He had wrecked his truck and need his trailer relocated to his new home about an hour away. So I used my Tacoma. My truck is rated at 6500 tow capacity so it was just under the max. It towed the trailer just fine. Sucked up gas like no ones business and I wouldn't recommend anyone two that kind of weight with their Tacoma on the regular, but for the hour trip it did just fine. In general you never really want to exceed 2/3 of your vehicle max tow rating. It can get a little dicey when you start to max it out, especially in a light pick up like the Tacoma, but it those trucks are made to work and they can very much handle their max capacity. 4300 pounds is actually perfect for the Tacoma. That's puts you right their at that 2/3 mark. Tow that thing with the Tacoma every day if you want.

I tow a 5000 lbs boat, and a 3500 lbs RV with my 2019 Tacoma all the time. Most of my miles are towing. I've been from WA to the FL keys with it. All these dopes that say not to pull with a Tacoma are dumb. You pick the right tool for the job. My rig used to be a 12k lbs 5th wheel with a 1 ton dodge diesel. I've pulled my little trailer with the dodge and it yanked it around dangerously. There is no reason for overkill. I will say a 4300 lbs trailer with a light load is about all I would do with the Tacoma, mostly because of air resistance.

I’m kind of pissed that you gotta jump through hoops to tow and put it in S4 etc power or none. It’s like a riddle. It certainly would not be the truck I’d have if I owned my own camper. Once again the weight police are out. If you don't own a turbo diesel you don't have enough truck. The Tacoma is rated for up to 6600 lbs. So 4300 should be no problem. He still has 2300 lbs to play with and I doubt he will have that much cargo.

Hey congrats on your RV. I live in Langley as well as have a 2016 tacoma trd sport w/ towing package. Just bought an RV as well, 2020 Jayco 174bh. Dry weight 3000lbs and loaded 3750lbs. I've towed this trailer over 8000km around BC this summer already. Tows great! My recommendation is to get an OBD2 reader and get the OBDfusion app on your smartphone so you can monitor transmission temps. Also don't tow in ECT power mode on the truck as it will overheat the transmission quickly, especially on mountain roads such as heading to the okanagan.

matt stockton my experience is that if I tow with ect power on and s4 then my transmission temps quickly overheat especially on long mountain passes and uphills. I’ve since started towing in s5 only and no ect and it’s been great. I take the same routes as I did before and the transmission temps never get as high and I don’t have to go 40kph over some hills anymore. I know it seems counterintuitive but this is just my experience. I also get way better gas mileage this way. On forums such as tacomaworld I’ve read it’s totally fine to tow without ect but you should definitely use s4 or s5.

The owners manual say only when cruise is activated that the engine brake become disabled. You may want to check your owners manual to see is your tacoma operates the same or not. I dont tow with cruise on, so not an issue for me. But i know plenty of people that like to use cruise while towing. Hope this info is helpful

Truly appreciate bringing us along and showing us the real deal. This is my take. You have way to much trailer for a Truck that has less Torque then the Horse power of the motor. I would never jumped into a pickup for purchase with Less Torque then HP. Now you purchased the Tacoma before trailer.. And i get that.. Tacoma is an awesome midsize Pickup. But Colorado and the New Ford Ranger with their basic Engines have more torque then motor HP's and both have higher towing ratings.

I have a 2008 Tacoma SR5 that now has over 250,000 miles. For 4 yrs. I periodically pulled my 6,000 lb. travel trailer from the coast inland and back to avoid hurricanes and bad tropical storms. My Tacoma did the job even when in 20 mph plus front-edge storm winds. (I wouldn't recommend doing that regularly.) During that time I found my Tacoma did well on fairly flat roadway but worked harder on slight to moderate grades. Thankfully there were no major hills between my two travel points and I did not do this often! One major takeaway for me is my Tacoma is better suited for loads under 2,500 lbs. which it pulls with ease. I think it can comfortably tow a 1,500 travel trailer/camper such as a small teardrop.

I asked the service department regarding heavy towing with my 2022 Tacoma at Max capacity. The service guy said that he did a lot of towing, so coming from a good source that understands the Toyota and also Towing in general. He said with ETC on keep the gear shifter in the S position for local driving. On the highway at cruising speed it's okay to switch into the D position and let it go into overdrive. Back to S when off the highway and there will be speed fluctuations. For going downhill he said to keep it in S and let the engine do some of the braking. It is designed for engine braking. Pulse the brakes as well. Don't ride the brakes all the way downhill because they will smoke. Basically said to split the workload between engine and brakes for going downhill. I also verified that the gear shift in the S position is a gear limiter. Not a gear selector. It does not let it go above the selected gear but it will go below. They probably have some safety overrides. See the video I posted above

I pull a apex 258RKS with my 2016 Tacoma. It’s longer and slightly heavier than yours coming in at 4600# dry. Tows not too bad but fuel economy is only 7-10 mpg, depending how fast I go. Get a sway control hitch though. 1st time it sways on you, you’ll need to change your pants.

the1cpu thanks for the info, on a scale between 1 to 10, how comfortable do you feel when you tow that trailer?
@the1cpu
@the1cpu 4 жыл бұрын
@@jemmycyc I'm Fairly comfortable with it. I'd say an 8. It would be higher but my TT has a very high tongue weight which sets it at the limit for tongue weight of the Tacoma. That also leaves me no leftover cargo carrying in the bed as my passengers use up the remaining cargo carrying capability of the truck. The trailer has plenty of space so I put any cargo in there instead. My sway control hitch works very well and I've not had any sway issues. I just fixed and adjusted my electric brakes so I'm hoping that improves the stopping performance. they weren't working that great but I still had no problems stopping. When I would apply the trailer brakes on the controller, i could feel them, but not very hard. They should be better when I take tit out again this coming weekend.

I have an 06 quad cab short box, same color. Pulled a 23ft Kodiak trailer that is 4200lbs dry. Did it most weekends in the summer around BC. By now you have figured out to stay steady at 90km/hr as a sweet spot for gas mileage. I added air bags to help with sag right away. After towing for 6 years, had to replace the leaf packs. A couple of the leafs broke from the strain of towing so much. I upgraded the suspension to Icons stage 3. Tows fine now.

Corey Cunningham I have a R-Vision Trail-Lite 189QB. As far as weight goes comfortably for long distances I would say 4000lbs dry is absolute max. My trailer with all my gear, occasionally a full fresh water tank, etc on a weight distributing hitch behaves quite well. No problems accelerating or braking, very little sway from the trailer. Mileage suffers a lot and the relatively small fuel tank on the truck makes for frequent stops at the pump and that is my biggest gripe.

Nice video and it's sparked a lot of good conversation. I've been towing for 5 years now. 4200lbs 20' and while it tows fine, I'm very weight conscious. I do my best to keep all our take alongs as light as possible. When we're loaded and ready to go, it's def noticeable versus when I'm putting it away to storage. I had a 2015 and now a 2019. 19 with the extra hp has an easier time with it. I rarely if ever go over 65 with 55-60 being average. My main concern is stopping ability. I've had to apply the trailer brake manually a couple times and that will put sweat on your forehead instantly! lol. Both vehicles I swapped in larger tranny coolers and I have a WD hitch which IMO is much more secure and more importantly, better for the rear leafs. I'm almost totally level but will be adding overloads or sumo springs soon. If I were to do it again I would get something around 3500lbs so I can bring more toys camping.

S mode is crap. All it does is limited the top gear the automatic transmission will shift too. ECT all the way and every day even without towing for the 3rd gen. That being said toying my 3000lb micro toyhauler trailer at 70-75 all day on the highway was too much even with 4:88’s and especially out West at high altitudes. Too much wind resistance. Swapped it in for Tundra with airbags. I’d say to properly cruise on the highway only 1/3 of your maximum weight especially if it has a lot of Wind resistance.

@shabutir1820
@shabutir1820 4 жыл бұрын
@@rustynail7866 You need to use 4th not drive in both. That will stop the gear hunting. Also, the 4.0L 1GR-FE produces 236hp@5200rpm and 266 lb-ft@3600rpm. The 3.5L produces 278hp@6000rpm and 265lbft@4600rpm. Which means, that the 3.5L will produce the same amount of power as the 4.0L at around 4700rpm as 265lb-ft or torque @ 4600rpm is equal to 232hp @ 4600rpm. So the 3.5L V6 will put out more power at lower rpms, if there is any "screaming" it will be due to either not having it in 4th or the truck being geared lower, which I doubt would be the case given the increased power output. All around the 3.5L is a much more efficient engine than the 4.0L and will produce more power at lower rpms.
@rustynail7866
@rustynail7866 4 жыл бұрын
Shabuti R18 torque at lower rpms is what gives an engine more pulling power, and as you have stated, the 4.0 produces about the same as the 3.5 , except it peaks at lower rpms. Horsepower is much less important. That is why diesels are used for pulling. They have high torque at low rpms.
@shabutir1820
@shabutir1820 4 жыл бұрын
@@rustynail7866 horsepower is a direct calculation of torque x rpm. If you were to look at the torque curve of the 3.5, you would see it produces more torque (hp) throughout the ENTIRE rpm range because it is a far more efficient design than the 4.0

It should be illegal for RV dealerships to sell people on “DRY” weights. Great looking trailer but you will be nowhere near 4300# when you hit the road to camp. Always go by the GVWR of the trailer. Also to find your “MAX” tow rating you take the GCWR which is 11,360 and subtract the GVWR of your truck. The number is on the vin tag in the door jam. I suspect it’s around 5600#. Then there’s payload capacity, another killer of these small trucks. I will agree Toyota is superior in reliability they’re just not up to the task when towing anything but a pair of Jet skis. JMHO. Enjoy the new trailer. Lots of memories to be made.

I have two 1st gen tacoma i tow a small ultra light travel trailer with. The 4 cylinder and the v6 both average 11-13 mpg at an average speed of 55-60 mph. Big difference is 4 cylinder struggles up hill and in high winds. The v6 has no problem with either. The shape of the trailer also matters. Boxer trailers have more wind resistance vs trailers with curved front ends similar to teardrop trailers. The weight becomes the issue when braking. It extends the distance and time it take to come to a stop. Go rule is the fully loaded trailer should weigh less than the vehicle towing it. I say this from experience
