As a quite experienced bass player I got curious because of all the talk about those Gary basses. So I ordered two of their P Basses to make sure not to get a too bad or too good example. To be honest, a friend of mine thought to start again with playing bass after he gave up when his kids came. 25 years ago. Two identical basses came to me. Playable, with decent fretwork, finish and hardware. Its a verry lightweight bass, there is not other instrument in my collection this lightweight. OK, maybe the Hohner B2 A, a copy of the Steinberger "canoe paddle" bass. The only thing that didn't please me are the pickups. They sound OK, but have not a lot output. OK, a first world problem, there is a gain knob at the amp. But it is significant less output as on my MiM Precision 50's Classic. And this one is what I call a bass with low output. I rolled the frettends a bit on both basses, and took some 000 Steelwool to smoothen out the back of the neck, because it feeled like they didn't sand it enough. I had about an hour of work on every bass, all setup, frett rolling (with a file), and sanding the neck. Now I have two cheap but playable instruments. My friend was overwhelmed when he got his bass for Christmas, and mine is in the rehearsal room, so I have not to store one of my expensive instruments there. And I don't have to carry a Bass all the time. I said this often, and I say it again, we live in exiting times, when beginner gear gets cheaper and better all the time. I still remember when I started out in 1975 (Yes, I am an old metal fart), you had to have some dough to get yourself a original US Fender, and amps were a fucking shitton of money. And there was no used market. In 1980 I found the first japanese Jazz Bass copy, from Kasuga but persumably made by Hoshino Gakki. A great instrument for less than half the price of a Fender, but around € 800 anyway. A Fender Jazz was around 2.000 € back in the days. Today you can get a decent bass plus combo amp for 800 €. This are great times we live in.

These things are amazing. I have two of their P basses, and I love them. I got mine on fleabay for $58 and change apiece. 😲 Both have very minor cosmetic issues (you have to look closely to see them), but the necks are straight, the fretwork is solid, they are extremely playable, and they sound quite good. Comparing them to my previous "beater" bass, an Ibanez GSR, I'd put these easily in the same category. The Ibanez has a tad bit better F&F, but only a tad. It's definitely not 3 times the guitar, even though it cost 3 times as much. It blows me away that they can offer these at the price they do. 👍

Hey Rodney. This bass sounds amazingly good for what it is. One thing I heard in the jam track with the drums was you playing the root and the octave at the same time while sliding up and down. Most people play octaves one note at a time, but I love when people play both at the same time. That just makes this bass all the more sound that good.

Just got their P bass in a natural finish and it definitely looks like a much more expensive instrument. I give it a solid 8 on appearance. I’m a fan of the older style neck shapes from Fender; a “U” shape or commonly known as the “baseball bat neck” and this bass has it almost perfect in comparison to the original. I have to give it a solid 10 in that aspect. The p’ups and electronics leave a lot to be desired imho but it does have a good Precision tone especially with the tone rolled off a bit. I’m going with a 6 in that department. The tuning machines are pretty cheaply made and I recommend oiling them immediately before you even play it and I would really suggest upgrading them to make it a gig worthy bass. I’m also going to recommend upgrading the nut and a high mass bridge to top it off and then it’s a good option for gigging it outdoors or for traveling and leaving the main workhorse in the stable. I’m pretty confident that I can gig this thing as it is with no worries, but it’s not hard to do some work and spend a little change to upgrade this bass into an instrument that’s potentially as good as a MIM Fender imho. I’m really amazed that you can get a decent instrument shipped to your door for under a bill! When I started playing 30+ years ago it was unheard of to find anything decent that didn’t make a serious dent in the wallet. Definitely impressed by them to say the least.

Let me tell you, I got mine about 2 months ago. It's the same as this one. Mine was $80 with amp. It is basswood. I was super impressed with unboxing it. My finish. Was flawless and the pictures did not do it justice. Straight out of the box I had to adjust one crooked saddle and tune it. It was perfectly playable. Later I learned about intonation. It did need that adjusted slightly. Now the only issue is a personal one I want a slightly lower action. A friend of mine has played it and said, he would definitely gig with it. That's my review addendum for your review...lol

I'm here cause I want that bass. My experience with Glarry has been unbelievable. I first got the thinline Tele which obviously needed lots of setup. I leveled the frets, new tuners, Tex Mex pickups, pots, switch and the whole nine yards. It took a couple long months for it to settle into being a guitar but now, 6-8 months later it's just as good as a real one. More recently I got the 335. That got the works aswell. Tuners, pickups, fret level but this time I kept the existing pots and switch cause they're not bad at all. This Glarry 335 is easily comparable to my buddies 70's 335. Not the same but these Glarrys are no joke. It is imperative that you be very familiar with fretwork and swapping pickups and soldering but if you do that all day these are fantastic.

these are incredible products - not just for the price either - I bought a 5-string first to pacify my desire to play across genres in the modern music world first! However, I just grabbed the G-Jazz bass & I am beyond thrilled. Leaves me plenty of budget for a top-rated bass amp for my leisure lessons, home practice and weekend jam sessions! Player reviews from Rodney, Bully & users on the Glarry site made my decision pretty easy - highly recommended regardless of your level Rodney pretty much nails this in his last 3mins!

I bought 2 Jazz Basses off AliExpress and they're very usable, not finished off great, but awesome for the price. The bridge and the tuners arent good but I will deff be buying more basses off AliExpress. The pups have a bit of mid scoop much like Dimarzio Ultra jazz pups, so i turn the mids up on the amp / desk. I also have an SX PJ bass and its very nice. On all 3 of my basses, the B string is fantastic - normally something severely lacking even on expensive basses. I sold all my Ibbys and Corts - they dont match up!🙂

For that price and the fact that there's no significant lacquer finish on the back of the neck I'd risk taking a spokeshave to it to thin it out towards the nut. A bit of sanding and wire wool to finish and it's a winner.

Kinda sad it out does a low end squire or dean for 1/3 the price. I actually started on a $100 china bass just like that, wasn't too bad, in fact the Ibanez SGR I bought after was worse for reliability with constant electronic issues and a tweaked neck $300 down the tube- took many hours at minimum wage to afford it- I'ts part of the reason I am turned off by SR's. IMHO if you are just starting out, a used LTD/Schecter or Peavy are the way to go, I would take that "Glarry" over any low end Squire, eppiphone or Ibanez Gio.

Picked up a transparent yellow model, this will be my first Jazz bass and compared to my Ibanez GSR 190 & 200 necks this thing is chunky! I got the total start up package for 109. Bass n 20wtt amp and all the extras. I think my tone knob has stopped working. I dont hear the change in settings anymore. Great review and info. Glad it's working out for you. Sorry to hear about the tone knob. My suspicion would be the cap for the knob has a bad solder joint or has come lose. It is a quick fix with a solder gun, and just a few screws to get under that plate. Good luck!

Out of the box, mine needed a turn and a half on the truss rod to get it to play without string buzz. That thing was cranked about as far as it would go. The neck pocket is no where near tight and the nut leaves a lot to be desired. I would say, some set up skills would be a plus, but like you said, it's lightweight, the frets were on the acceptable side, sounds OK, What the heck? I just wanted something to tool around on for fun and show a beginner enough to get him going. I didn't need a monster of a bass and this fits the bill.

Hey I’m not a bass player but I’m trying to get into to it but I don’t know which one to buy what is the difference between the jazz bass then just the other one ? Sorry dumb question
@RodneyMcG
@RodneyMcG 5 жыл бұрын
Not a dumb question at all! I'm assuming by "the other one" You mean a Precision bass. The difference is the sound and the feel of the neck usually. A jazz tends to be a bit slimmer in the neck and a precision will be a bit thicker. Until you are more experienced, I wouldn't worry too much about the sound difference. You will start to know which one you prefer as you develop, and can move on to a bass more customized to your liking. If you are just starting, do whatever feels comfortable, or looks good to you, and you'll figure it out as you go. I hope that helps, good luck!

The Precision Bass was Leo Fender's first electric bass. It had the 'precision' name because of the frets. (All standup basses are fretless) The Jazz Bass was his second and he took some of the feedback from the P-Bass when designing the Jazz. So, in a way the P is to the J is like the Telecaster is to the Strat. Typically Precision Basses have a more bottom heavy sort of chunky bass sound that you hear in a lot of Blues, Punk and Classic Rock songs. The Jazz Bass has a thinner, faster neck, greater tonal control and the pickups are brighter. The articulation makes it a favorite of the more virtuosic players like Jaco Pastorius, Geddy Lee, Marcus Miller and others.

It all comes down to taste, you'll have to try a few things. D' addario are usually pretty affordable and reliable.

Nothing wrong with a bass that is slightly less than 1/2 the price of Stagg.

Think it's a better feel than most squires. (Better made). But the pick ups maybe be better in a Squire.

In all other videos they say very neck heavy. They let go of the neck and it drops down like carrying a rifle.

I haven't seen those videos, all I can do is demonstrate mine and it's obviously not neck heavy.

Earlier models of these had the traditional Fender headstock. The newer ones (within the last couple months, it looks like) have the streamlined headstock seen in this video. I think they've made a few tweaks on the newer ones (including the headstock redesign) to address the ginormous neck dive and make them hang better. I have two of their P basses (new headstock), and they balance just fine. 👍

@@crominion6045 I have bought two of their P basses, too. One was for a friend who wanted to start again after 25 years. I am here to second this. There is no neckdive, tho the basses are light, persumably made out of basswood, but there is no neckdive at all, even with a guitarstrap with a "slippery" inside. Some minor adjustments have to be done. But, hey, what are you waiting for at this price! I love the bright, shiny yellow finish they came with.

No a glarry bass isn't worth the money. It's made in China. Stop buying Chinese and Korean! You are why Gibson and fender are so expensive.

Gibson and Fender charging over inflated prices are the reason why real world musicians go to Asian manufacturers. Fender and Gibson are history and rely on the guitar snobs to keep them in business. Better quality instruments can now be bought for much less and yes, they are made in Asia. It’s a no brainer.

Chaplin I would agree with you if they could make guitars as well as some of the Asian manufacturers. USA strats are overpriced and can’t even leave the factory with a good setup. Mexican strats are hit and miss. Yet again I am selling a nearly new Fender Strat because it has bad tone, the body might as well be made of concrete. I make my own pickups and the single coils I fitted are ok in the Fender (better than stock) but they sound amazing in my $150 dollar Squier Strat standard. As a result the $700 Fender has to go because the Squier has rendered it obsolete. Might get me a few Harley Bentons out of the sale.
