It is a shame we didn't have the internet and fine people like you to teach us these things 40 years ago when I was a kid and had to deal with crappy instruments! Am an old fart now, but you are teaching me how to fix and maintain them, and helping the next generation! You are awesome Sean! Merry Christmas bro! 🎅👍

I bought a Glarry PJ, the blue to black burst. I've been a luthier for eons, and I wanted to use it as a modding platform. Could I turn a $79 bass into something that feels like a $1600 bass. Mine had a maple finger board, and they never really finished the fret ends. No fret sprout but all were sharp. I pulled the finger board and replaced it with a maple ribbon curly maple one. The inlays are now black pearl blocks. When you turn the neck they go from 'mercury silvery white to black.' Slimmed the entire neck front to back, better shape and a 1.5" width at the nut. All black mettal will be changed to cosmo black, that mercury back look. The paint for the body and headstock face plate for lil Daddy Roth sparkle Berry Pink sparkle, or fuchsia. The finger board and back will be covered with many coats of amber-ish Tru-oil gun oil. I'm changing the 4 volume and tone controls to 3 knob two tones and one blender stereo fader with a detent instead of any type switch. Detent pickups are on full and then I can fade each for volume. Be done in about 30 days.

I recently upgraded a Fender Squire Pbass with all new pots and pickup. I want to say your ground wire technique is pure genius. Makes everything so neat, I even took some of it apart thinking "it can't be right. Too simple", then put it back like I had the first time (your way), and it worked perfectly. Thanks for such a simple approach. I'll be using it all the time.

You should try tapping the high frets before filing, just in case they are not properly seated.
@f1948s2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. With where these come from the wood still has moisture content and as they dry out that is when you get sharp ends poking past the fretboard and frets rising out of their slot. My bass had been setting for a while and as I started to clean the fret board upon checking them practically everyone of them needed a slight tapping. I will try to keep it humidified since I live in the southwest U.S.

I just bought one of these, so I was wondering if you could please comment on what grit was the sand paper on the sanding block and also what size do you estimate the frets are and what size crowning file should one use on the frets because when I went to order one online they weren't cheap, there were all sorts of sizes and I just want the right one. I plan on correcting these issues. Also there are 2 sizes Precision Notched Straightedges for bass guitar for standard and short scale. I'm not sure what scale the bass is considered and looking up definitions did not help me because I don't know where to measure from where to where... Great video! Thanks, Mike

I picked up a no name Precision bass clone from Wish.com a few months back for $59. I'm planning to mod it by adding a Jazz bass pickup. Doesn't sound bad as is, I just wanna experiment!
@f1948s2 жыл бұрын
Why did you start the straight edge at the 5th fret area instead of starting at the top(1st) fret area of the neck when you first straightened out the neck? When I worked on guitars I always started at the top of the neck with the straight edge. Your opinion would be appreciated. Thanks for the video. Good job. So true about needing the proper tools.
@scarmyguitar2 жыл бұрын
I used a guitar straight edge, I didn't have one for a bass scale at that time. Thanks for asking!
