Owned a Maserati quattroporte 08 GTS since 2014, it’s a beguiling car to drive, I don’t notice the bumpy ride now, but it cruises on the motorway nicely with the cruise control set to nearly 3 digits, and once you get to a country road, (the highlands of Scotland being a favourite) it is like nothing else, long open roads and great acceleration coupled with smooth quick cornering make for an ideal GT car with loads of room, apart from finicky electrics, it’s been a very good vehicle, and these early ones are more like £15k now which is a bit of a bargain for the right owner

It's really a fast GT coupe ballooned out to a 4-door, which is something the Italians have pretty much always done (I can remember the introduction of the very first Quattroporte). JayEmm has just revisited the Alfa Giulia QV and it seems to be just about the first Italian 4-door express to actually be done the other way around (Alfa, of all the makes you wouldn't expect to nail it).

Really the Maserati is a 4 door Ferrari. And if you recognise that you are buying an uncompromising sports car that has space for a couple of dogs in the back . Then it's a great car because on those special days when you can really hear it bark the absolute joy of a sports car will compensate for everything else in spades. The Mercedes will always be boring. Mercedes owners buy Teslas... well some do

I Drive a W140 S280, why a 280? Not for any other reason than I was buying a newer diesel E Class and then a friend went through DPF, injector and other issues which put me off. 98 S280 is not fast but quicker than it has any right to be, returns 30 MPG but loses no money has no DPF and is like riding on a silent cloud. Not crazy soft close this or air sprung that to go wrong. I love Italian cars and had a Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo for a while, I also have a couple of V8 Land Rovers but for sheer comfort and A 2 B daily transport the Merc is a Hero.

Great fiercely honest crit of the Mazzer QP. I’ve never driven that Merc model but it looks one hell of a bargain at £900. I’d love to hear a mechanic’s report on the car because surely it must have some expensive repairs due imminently otherwise why the giveaway price? I would take issue with your description of £30k value on the QP. I own a 2007 QP auto and I must say I love it but it’s value will be nearer £10-12k now so the 2020 model featured will be lucky to make £15k. (I bought it 4 years old for £28k) It’s true that the Mazzer is horribly expensive on parts. New front discs and pads £1500 for example. Great fun on long or short trips though. If you want comfort buy a older Rolls Royce.

Mercedes is trading on a reputation for reliability it just no longer has. Are they innovative? Yes. Are they beautiful? Yes. Are they reliable? No. I have owned a Merc from new and in the four years I have owned it; the reliability is shocking. Added to the service from MB and their dealership network, which is equally poor; I don't think I would ever buy another. The vehicle cost £53k so wasn't like it was a "cheap" model either.

One of these would be within my budget - the other is basically in the stratosphere 😁 I'm inclined to say that the Merc is; albeit many years apart with design and technology; similar in many ways to my old P5B..... A luxury executive car with a bit of grunt: best utilised for wafting along, so to speak. Bearing in mind who owns that Maserati..... not going to slate it because there is something that does make sense. You found it out during the review, methinks. Good review there Jack 👍

No mechanical issues in over 3 years - in fact my mechanic wants to buy it. Strange what you say about the ride as I find it a touch too soft . Then again I come from Caterhams and Lotus’s. Floaty old s-class in softer, more luxurious ride than maseratis sportiest version of its sports saloon shocker. Merc is a great car for £900 and will also ride better than a brand new e63s, RS6 or M5. I guess that makes it’s better than them too, at 100k each. It’s a fun test but these cars have nothing in common apart from having 4 doors. I ran about in a 1996 fiesta I bought for £150 a few years back, that rode better than every modern car I’ve driven in the last 15 years too, and was dirt cheap to run. Unbeatable!

It’s quite simple Jack, the MB is a luxury car with sporting pretensions while the Maserati is a sports car with luxury pretensions.

Coming from a 650mile trip in a w116 s class. I agree the comfort is a Merc DNA trait and they do handle very well for what they are, 40 miles of mountain twisty roads were part of the trip. Having driven a few S-Class cars w126, W140 and including the w220, they do feel "special". With that said the Maserati ticks a bunch more boxes for me and will be the next toy. It may be schizofrenico but it is a car you look back at after a drive and they do turn hydrocarbons into a symphony.

@@coltr7561 depends on your expectations. I tend to dig the magic carpet ride and still lean it into corners harder than most folk. I suppose it's subjective.

I was in high school when the W220 came out and our family car was a W202. To this day the W220 is still my favourite Merc. Always wanted one.

I really think you have compared an apple with an orange in this one. The person who chooses to buy a Mercedes will not be thinking of a Maserati as an alternative.

Love the Maser, all the pity that the follow up wasn't as good though do like the look of the smaller Ghibli. Given how good Ferrari are at sports cars, pity Maserati can't do the same with their range as alternative to the Germans.

The QP may well have a split personality and unexpected strengths and weaknesses, but it's nothing like this actual comparison, for being pointless and silly. • The frame of reference changes by the minute. (Family car? GT? Luxury car? Value for money?) • The hyperbole is as highly babbled as that in any 27 video I've seen. • A few points of difference are highlighted, but most are briefly referred to, or ignored completely. (Surely, boot and other storage space is a relevant feature to assess the success of a luxury car - no mention. Where and how is the QP less roomy?) • How many km had each car done? • Even more significant, did they either car have new, or even decent quality tyres fitted? These heavily influence ride comfort, steering feel, cornering grip - even interior noise (Jack never _ever_ mentions tyres, in these very random car features.) 🤷🏼‍♂️

The BisMerc isn't Merc's best effort by a long way. As a cheap(ish) used buy, it really makes a lot of sense though. The Maser is something you have to really want.

Different types of car being rated against mainly torquey/wafty ride. Yes, the Merc would win that. As you said Jack, the Merc was a low cost revelation, of how cars could be, compared to your more err, 'characterful' other cars!

This is a strange comparison. These are completely different cars, which can not be compared. I don't understand the purpose of this video. Who will buy the Maserati Quattroporte? I will! Because it is a fantastic car that is an absolute pleasure to drive. And it looks good and has style - for the years to come! Something which the Mercedes can not offer.
