As a general rule for musical instruments, buy a cheap one until you get good.. you shouldn't even think about an expensive instrument until you covered your scales and practiced hundreds of songs..

Get a cheap one til you're sure you want to commit, but a quality instrument will be way easier and more enjoyable to play, ultimately nicer ones will keep you in the practice room longer than cheaps with problems. @Rita Cardinal fr. Being a musician is a lifetime commitment. You might as well get the nicest one you can afford once you get some basics down. My friends family has a tradition, they go in blindfolded to pick their new instrument so you aren't influenced by brand or tone or looks. All that really matters is sound and feel. that's how I picked my first bass after playing nearly every bass in the store. I immediately knew it was the one I wanted from the first note I played.

Peter M the thing is that with any instrument, a beginner needs to get it checked out by a repair tech or an instructor. This video is a perfect example. A beginner piccolo player probably would have thought his or her playing sucked because they couldn’t get a solid tone. Amelie immediately was able to identify the problem as a leak in the right hand and also that it was likely a leak that might resolve itself once the pads are broken in. The more professional instruments are play tested thoroughly before they go out, packed securely in a padded case that will last as long as the instrument. Still a beginner especially would need to get this instrument checked out because it may have been jostled during shipping or set up incorrectly. Also, a beginner won’t know what to expect from their instruments. When I first got started,i played on a flute that my friend gave me for years thinking that I couldn’t achieve a good sound. My tone was airy. I finally decided to take lessons to improve my sound and the instructor told me almost immediately that I had leaks and they were causing the airy tone. Also cheaply made instruments may play fine for a short time, and then have problems appear. My repairman always tells me about these cheap instruments that come in and the repair costs more than the instrument is worth. If problems gradually appear, the beginning student is likely going to think that their technique is deteriorating instead of thinking that it may be problems with the instrument. I always tell my sax students to get an inexpensive pre-owned horn from a reputable brand and dealer and get it checked out by a repair tech. This is just until they are sure it’s something they want to play. After that I tell them to sell it because they can get close to what they paid for it. Then buy a quality horn.

You shouldn't by any instrument. You can lend nearly any instrument in good quality, especially if you book a teacher. If you start with a crap instrument, you will loose your joy for music very fast. Of course there can be usable budget instruments (as this one in the video) but most are a pain in the ass -and in the ears.

It sounds like a fair Piccolo for the money, but clearly your's sounds so much nicer. The question is, does it sound over 3 grand better? Probably not for most players, unless they are professionals or a student at a higher level....that also has the money to invest in their instrument.

@@dncviorel This Eastar is hardly "garbage". Besides the leak it seems like a great starter or marching piccolo, especially for an experienced student flautist who isn't sure they want to commit yet. "Garbage" would be a completely broken down instrument, not merely lower quality. Besides, I wouldn't trust any high schooler with a $3k piccolo in the bleachers. $100 go nuts, not the end of the music department if that one's dropped. Pep band isn't exactly instrument friendly, and getting a decent horn for an amazing price is a great way to introduce players.

I don't think I'd play the Eastar long term in a concert band or in an orchestral setting, but for $99 it's not bad. Would make for a good outdoors/travel piccolo or those occasions when the director wants everyone in the section to play the Star and Stripes solo on piccolo. So I think it would be better for the more occasional piccolo player on a tight budget. Our piccolos are siblings. I currently play on a Yamaha 82 piccolo with a Mancke headjoint. :)

You can hear the difference immensely. The 99 dallor one could barely hold a high note, but the 3,000 one can definitely hold it together. Even those little trills sound good on the more expensive piccolo

I work at a music store (Music & Arts), and we recommend to NEVER buy off amazon because if they get broken (things get broken a lot more as a beginner) the shop has a really hard time finding the parts to fix it and sometimes they can’t even fix at all. So I would not recommend that for a beginner, but for someone just wanting to play around on it. But even then, you would have to buy a new one every time it breaks.

My sister has a pet bird that I’ve been pet-sitting and has inspired me to want to learn either flute or piccolo so I can play music with them. I can whistle well but it would be more fun to actually play an instrument lol. I used to play saxophone (alto and tenor) in high school and was in my high schools marching and concert band. I really enjoyed it then but haven’t picked up an instrument since. That was like 6 years ago so I’m now back at beginner level. I had been wanting to pick up trumpet but now I’m leaning more towards piccolo thanks to said bird. I was already looking at them on Amazon and this was one that I had saved to my list! The 3000$ piccolo sounds 'Broken in' - And the 99$ piccolo sounds 'to be broken in and in need of regulation' - Would love for you to revisit this after breaking it in for a while. One thing I will say is that there is a unique dark, yet very warm tone palette you can achieve with a wooden piccolo that you simply cant come close to on a metal piccolo.

The lowest and highest notes were definitely clearer/sharper on the expensive piccolo. The highest notes on the cheaper piccolo had something like a high pitched car horn sound in them somewhere. It’s odd but I could definitely hear a horn sound.

The tone clarity is much better on yours, of course. The amount of force required to get a good tone is a lot less on your pro model. It rang in my ears more and it was a lot less wispy-windy sounding. A cheaper model is best, like you said, for marching bands and for schools who need piccolos but are on a tight budget. Thanks for this comparison! My daughter is fascinated by the piccolo and I got this for her 11th birthday yesterday. She loves it and started playing "Jingle Bells" and creating her own tunes. For some reason, she prefers it to the flute primarily because of the size and sound. It does have a nice tone. But my understanding is both should be practiced together, correct? Would love to see more videos on piccolo for beginners. There doesn't seem to be much material/tutorials out there on piccolos.

Most folks start on flute and only play piccolo part time in concert band and full time in marching band. Piccolo is harder to play. It plays an octave higher and requires strong breath support and better lip control.

I can ever ear the differences between expensive and cheap instruments, saxophones sound the same to me, microphones differences are very minute. But this one somehow was night and day to me. As you said the Eastar leaks quite a bit so you can clearly ear more air, but yours although elite level isn't impermeable to this issue as well for what I noticed. Thanks for the video.

You might want to rent one from a music store for a month or two before commiting to buy one. Learning to play piccolo on a really cheap, bad instrument would be really hard, and most music stores have decent or good piccolos for $15-$30 a month. Some people domt end up liking piccolo at all, so that would be my recommendation. If you do enjoy it, then you can buy a decent one.

I play in middle school band and I have wanted to play piccolo for as long as I’ve been playing flute. My teacher granted me the wish of trying hers for the class period and I did great. I believe it was the pearl brand. She said I did better when she started lol. I was very interested in two musical instruments growing up, the violin and the piccolo. My dad wanted us to get into music but he basically said, anything but those until you move out. You see...my dad has abnormally good hearing, the high notes of those instruments hurt his head.

I'm just picking up the flute and I've been playing the trombone for 4 years so learning a new clef and fingerings is hard but I LOVE THE FLUTTEEEEE

Hello, I am a middle school flute player. My teacher wants me to also play piccolo to add variety to our band. I was wondering if the one with a lip plate or the one without is better? Thanks for reading :)

Clover Mint i play piccolo in my high school band and mine has a lip plate. I personally don’t think it matters, it just depends on what brand you get. Hope this helped :)

Rosie is right. For band it doesn't matter much. You'll get alot out of a piccolo with either at the point your at in band. Have fun! :)

I have been wanting to get a piccolo for awhile since my schools band only has two and I am likely to not play it til my senior year due to wonderful upperclassmen and I think this will be the piccolo that might convince my mother considering it’s price and that this video proves it isn’t a waste of money on something that will just break the next day. Love my Yamaha flute. I bought a $99 piccolo years ago and it was great for a few months. Went out of adjustment and my tech couldn't get it back to sounding like it did at first. The keys are just to soft. Would love a Yamaha piccolo but can't afford one. I have a student piccolo and mostly use it for Stars and stripes at all our concerts.
