The beauty about Lexus reliability is unlike that of parent company Toyota, Lexus cars are about as complicated in luxury and tech as its European counterparts. Making a Corolla reliable vs. a Focus is easy; there's simply not much to break in the Corolla. Making a LS460 reliable vs. a 750i is harder once you account for all the millions of power adjusters, electronic this & than, sensors, radar, motors and all the things luxury cars are expected to have. Yet that's what Lexus does and continues to do. This alone is why I hold Lexus in the same regard as Mercedes, Audi and BMW. IMO Acura and Lincoln doesn't even come close.

I pulled over at PEP Boys and bought a lifetime warranty alternator and replaced it MYSELF in under 30 minutes with the tools provided in the tool kit. I needed a bolt wrench and a tightening wrench. That's if you take an average, which isn't entirely accurate, especially when you consider the fact that she STILL OWNS all five Lexus's. The oldest, a 1999, has 150,000 miles. The newest, a 2011, has just 10,000 miles. There's also a 2002, 2005, and 2008 model in there with between 40,000 and 90,000 miles. Putting that many miles on that many cars and having ZERO issues of any kind, is incredible. I'm not saying they are all just running, but that none have needed a single thing.

Lexus's are the best cars ever. My first car was a 2002 Lexus GS. Never had a problem. At 180,000 miles I was in a head-on collision. I was able to drive it off the road to a gas-station parking lot where it was towed to a junk yard. My replacement was a 2002 Lexus LS which has 200,000 miles and never broken down. My offroad vehicle is a modified 1999 LX with 300k miles on it. After scaling a mountain on a dirt bike trail, a coolant hose ruptured overheating the engine and setting my engine compartment on fire. After I put the fire out and then using hand tools and some spring water in the radiator, it started right back up and drove down the mountain. Since that incident, it has done quite a few jeep trails and was in the recent Yotamafia Toyota truck rally in Atlanta. Anyway... best cars/SUV's you can buy, whether used or new. If you buy new, you are buying something you can easily take to 400k miles and keep for 25 years.

Lexus LS production involves specialized personnel who are tasked with key production points, such as testing each vehicle's V8 engine via dynamometer and stethoscope for calibration before installation. With the LS 460, a hand-sanded paint process was introduced. The production standards used on the Lexus LS were eventually adopted by the manufacturer for other vehicles; in 2007, the assembly of Toyota Corolla economy cars used the same panel gap measurements as the LS 400

Yes, but luxury cars need torque more so than they need horsepower. If you put, say, a 400 HP V6 in the car, it would take many more revs to make that power. The V8 makes lots of low end torque, which is that "effortless power" you want from a luxury car. A V6 could never feel like that, because even if it does make the power, it requires too many revs to get there.
@TheSmokingTire12 жыл бұрын
That's fine, and you roll the dice if you do. I've owned German, Japanese, and American cars, and though I've enjoyed driving the German cars the best, they have all been at the dealer for something besides service, which has usually left me stranded on the side of the road. American cars are very dependable, but little trim pieces break all the time, and the Japanese cars have never had issues of any kind.

First LS changed the world. I was fortunate enough to have 3 “old world” Lexus cars. A gs300, gs400 and an LS430. I miss all 3. It’s been quite some time, and I’m about to go back to Lexus.

Tell the reliability thing to my sunroof. 3 trips so far and Lexus can't fix the sunroof rattle. Going back again for a 2013 GS350 Fsport.

It's interesting you would say that about the brakes. (6:13) I have a 2005 Honda Accord that feels the same way. It feels as if I m going to be catapulted out the windshield if I just barely touch the brake pedal. There is NO progressive feel to it. It's almost as if it's either ON or OFF. The car has great ABS, so if a cat runs out onto the street and you really push the brakes? You literally get lifted off the seat as the brakes engage.

Thanks for the honest review. I briefly text drove a 2013 Lexus GS F Sport. It had the cranberry interior and dark gray exterior with all the bells and whistles. It also had the same touchy breaks. IMO, Lexus is still making some very nice looking and reliable vehicles. I have a 1992 SC 400 and it is still running strong and looking good. The only problem now is Lexus no longer makes certain replacement parts for this car.

You said that most new Lexus' are boring. I'm just proving your statement wrong. Different strokes for different folks. I would get an Lexus GS over the overweight and overlarge F10 5 series anyday -- I value an exciting drive unlike being just a badge snob. :)

It's based on the Avalon Limited 11' with minor modifications to chassis, heavy modification have been made to transmission as seen in tech specs. Yo Hiruta noted working around the Camry / Avalon base in his design notes. The new Lexus are based on the new Avalon " same platform as the Lexus ES" as quoted by Toyota Rep at the New York International Auto Show in April 2012.

over engineered means stronger materials because they can, not because they have to. It means building engines with a useful life of 300k or 400k instead of 120k like the Europeans do. It means using better materials even if that means you make less profit. It's engineering a car so that even second or third owners will have a proper luxury experience, which (after confirming with several European automakers PR people), the Europeans don't bother with.

actually, none of the cars have reached the end of their life because she still owns them all. When the leases run out, the cars are still in such good shape that they are worth more as cars, so she just keeps them. The oldest, a 1999, has 150,000 miles. The newest, a 2011, has around 10,000 miles. There's a 2002, a 2005, and a 2008, and nothing on them has ever required a repair.
@TheSmokingTire12 жыл бұрын
He currently has a 750, which both he and I hate. It's had so many problems in the first 20,000 miles. He had a last-generation S-Class, which was probably the least reliable car we've ever owned. I reviewed the new S-Class, which is very nice, to drive, but I'd be very nervous bying one.

The same way I know, considering the car is not offered in my country. It's called "knowing what you're talking about" through "doing your research."

The interior I think has come along SO well as compared with the equivalent LS from six years ago like my dad currently has. In particular, the dash looks better - the fit and finish was never a problem, but Lexus never had a particular theme or motif when designing the LS. Here, like you said, they do. And Matt, yes, I agree with you about the XTS. Perhaps $78,995 base or something.

No, the LS has a unique chassis. All those other cars you mentioned are FWD (or FWD based AWD), the LS is RWD architecture.

Good review! A nice, solid, and reliable car/sedan. I too agree that it could do with a bit more HP/Torque considering the F-Sport badge.

It seems like you are the exception to the rule. We've put many thousands of miles on six separate Lexus vehicles, and never, ever had an issue at all.

I bought a 95 GS in 2004 with 60 k miles, 10 years later the car now has 200 k . I agree with this guy these cars especially the first generation ones are probably the best built cars in the history of cars. The only major problem was I had to put in a new radiator and harmonic balancer. Other than that it continues to run very smooth and quiet,

Matt, you and I have a very similar car history. I am 36. When I was young I drove a 95 Z28 and 94 Formula when you had Corvettes then I went to NA Miata and NB Miata. Then I had a 1991 Lexus LS400 when my 2006 Porsche Cayman S was in the shop for 4 months then went Honda S2000. 7 yeara later and still kicking.
