I have an 9 year old tri color Border Collie, his name is Dusty. I live on a 1/3 acre lot that is partially fenced, Dusty is very attached to me and almost always wants to be by my side but I am often gone for hours at a time and Dusty is never on a rope. He is home alone a lot and when I get home he is either waiting for me in the driveway or on the back porch. I've never had a dog so easy to train or stay home so well as Dusty. He does visit my next door neighbours and when children walk down the road he will greet them at the end of my driveway but it is amazing how he always stays so close to home. When I got him he was the pup that stayed in the dog house while the other pups were jumping at the fence. So Dusty is laid back for a Border Collie, which is what I wanted. Another cool thing about Dusty is how smart he is, his cunning has caught me by surprise many times and is always ready for a game, I've had a lot of fun with that dog. Their great dogs.

Our BC is 1.5 years old and does fantastic alone even for 6+ hours. She has never torn anything up. We attached a 20’x40’ dog yard to our software so she can go out through her dog door if it’s not too cold. Her only problem is she is sketched out by new people since she didn’t get socialize during Covid. It is stressing me out. I’ve never had a dog weirded out by people😩. Love your videos!!

My dog when left alone, he just chill on the couch, took the swing cushion to the Sunny area. Sit on the patio chair. Napping most of the day. Moving everything from the cradle out.

Dogs love crates with comfy bedding , blankets , toys, and covers , door left open , they see it as a Den like in the wild, ( there private space) they can love it)

I used to.not crate my bc but now he is up to 13 hrs a night without complaint. As to left alone I do that during the day because he has a big fenced yard to chase people walking by. I am working on him barking less but he will bark at passerby esp if walking their dog. That is his basic job during normal hours. We play a lot of ball frisbee and tug too.

Not one Dog expert on YT has mentioned a tip that I would love to share regarding of Separation anxiety , Grace my Lab/ Bull terrier , Stafffy mix has had this anxiety issue since I owned her at 8 weeks when I also owned Mictra , a Collie x Staffy , I used to go out & leave them both together and she would bark and howl . Sadly Mictra passed away and Still Grace doesn't like being left alone. at almost 2 years old. I must of watched every YT video on the subject twice and still no improvement . I reached out to a behaviorist and what she told me does help up to 70% and you wont find this info anywhere . DO NOT throw the ball for your Dog ! ! as this increases the Adrenalin in the Dog and stays with them hours afterwards. Exercise them before leaving them but no excitement , leaving a calm dog with out bucketloads of Adrenalin in their system is more likely to stay calm when your out , I was also told to leave them in one room , curtains/ blinds and doors closed .. I also invested in a pet cam with a mic and a speaker , I can then talk to her when I out if she gets agitated, as far as she is concerned I could be in the next room or garden when she hears my voice . Yes I still play fetch with Grace as she loves chasing the ball but ONLY if I am not going to leave her . I hope my tips help .

I work at this restaurant and this regular comes in every single morning. He has a bc and it is the best dog I have ever seen. He stays right by his side until the owner says not to. If the leash is off he says leash and he picks it up and brings it to his owner. The dog itself is a regular for us now we make him steak every morning for free lol.

trained my chihua to be alone with small steps: first very short time alone from couple of minutes and slowly increasing the time alone + rewarding him when he were quiet when I came back home. Never open the door if your puppy is barking or howling because you will teach them barking will give him what he wants => he will continue the rewarded behavior. It is good to teach your dog to be calm alone because if you try to give them activities 24/7 they will never learn how to be calm and rest while you are away

@@FenrirCanineLeaders I dont use crate that much.. but I do have one because I put my dog in there when I work out.. otherwise he would constantly come to sniff my feet or jump on me and he could get seriously injured.. but yea otherwise I let my dog be freely in my apartment :D but I understand if some people prefer crates.

We have a 10 year old Blue Heeler and a 10 month old Border Collie. We never used a crate. We just let the Blue Heeler train the new pup and be her security blanket while we are gone. We don't have any behavioral issues with our Border Collie. The only thing she tears up are my wife's artificial flowers and her toy's but that is to be expected.

If you leave them alone or in a crate they're probably thinking about how to get out of the crate. My dog thinks that it's a puzzle. They say to buy the puzzle games to keep it occupied. But then everything is a puzzle game. She thinks she's Houdini. They don't give up either. I used it for herding. You want that in that situation. I was using it for goats and their just as stubborn and also escape artist. I bought pure destruction. the dog would probably escape from it's enclosure help the goats escape and then try to bring them to you if you left them alone long enough. They'll start training you to herd. All it wants to do is work.

I have had Border Collies since 2005. I love the breed. My experience, if I raise the BC since it was a pup, once the dog reaches a mature age of 3 or older, I can leave them home alone without them eating the sofa. My first BC wasn't crate trained and I ended up with some furniture chewed up. So, I taught her to chew bones and not furniture. Ha ha.

Thanks for this video! Our border collie is now 1 year old and he goed to doggy daycare 2 days a week because we work full time. We are now learning him to be alone without closing his crate and it’s going really well. He is not destructive in any way. But there is a chance that in the future he’ll need to be alone for more than 5 hours… do you think that is possible?

Crates are great. Your crate at home is not the same as the shelters. Like he is saying, it'[s a safe space for them. It is hard at first, mostly for our own guilt.

Think of it as cozy and not prison. My BC has slept at night ina crate from day 1. I give her a favorite treat each night…small because I don’t want her to have to poo….btw, take the dog out for pee and poo just before bedtime so there isn’t that urge in the middle of the night. When my dog whimpers to wake me i get up, whether it’s 4:30, or the usual 5:30….she knows when she needs to get out I wake up and take….that keeps it a positive thing. My dog is only 20 months old, I don’t know if i’ll ever have her sleep at night outside of her crate. She has day bed areas around the house, without a crate. Also, never punish your dog by putting them in a crate. When she was young she had naps in her crate, scheduled naps to reinforce the crate, again once awake i’d take her out. It’s not a prison cell.

My female black 1 yo border collie hates when I leave but she gets better. They need to be disciplined to not be around you 24/7 even if they don't like it but they will grow to like it.

Assuming you train a border collie properly from pup to adult...are these breeds capable of being left home alone for an 8-10 hour work day? Both my wife and I work from home currently, which is ideal in raising a collie pup. We don't know how long we'll have these kinds of opportunities though, and whether commuting will be in our future again. This is our biggest deterrent in selecting this wonderful breed. Outside of work we are very active.

I’ve had many Border Collies throughout my life, so far, and I would say unequivocally that an 8-10 hour separation would be cruel - even if they know you’ll be returning. And I am sure that applies to all breeds. 4 hours, in my view, is the max that a pet dog should be left alone. This is a major reason why doggy day care exists. We make our choices in life, and to have a dog plus being away all day working is like having your cake AND eating it - only cake doesn’t suffer from separation anxiety. If I were you, I’d get a goldfish.

Honestly I trust him being out and alone. Its all in the training and time spent with them a high energy dog need to be played or worked with every day almost all day. Also crate training is just mean to this breed.

Crate training us essential even if you never use it at home. It's great for emergencies or if they have to go to b the vet or have a procedure that requires strict breed rest, or if you ever v take them to a groomer. Without crate training the dog could get seriously hurt. There's also the difference between a grown dog who has proven trustworthy vs a puppy. It's never bad to keep them safe ^.^

From rescue I got a BC mix. SHe ran right for the crate & then came out wagging her tail. House broken but really bad traits otherwise. Pulls in lease. Never comes to her name. Got trainer but he was verbally rude to me so I don’t trust his training. Kind of on my own. Ty 4 tips.

You've got that right. Crate training is essential for the Border Collie. A nice doggie covered den with a cuddly blankie, a Kong with peanut butter! Otherwise you will come back home to find your $3,000 lounge in bits.

Haven't even got a crate in the house and our border collie is fine for a few hours. She got full access to the house (except for the spare bed rooms) and she never chewed anything that wasn't her toys or treats. I guess we got lucky with her 😅 Also, our neighbour checks in on her multiple times a day if we both happen to be at work at the same time.

Nonsense. My Collie has only chewed up one piece of paper while we were gone. Mostly because it blew off the table from our A/C(our fault for leaving that possibility). She chewed it up probably because it never happens when's she is home alone and it was out of the ordinary. A dog that chews furniture, shoes, or anything else, is probably because of your poor effort at training them to know what's ok and not ok to chew. My Collie is off the wall with energy for 3/4 of the day and always needs something to kill boredom. But she knows its not a good day for her if she chews things we have punished her for when we are present at home. LOL she actually only chews stuff she knows she shouldn't when we are home and she wants attention, but my girlfriend is too easy on her and she never received proper punishment from her for bad behavior. When I am home she is much better behaved. Funny how that works

@@dudeCar88 yes he pushed me, obviously accidentally and I fracture my tibia, needed surgery. This was in October. Now in therapy for recovering movement. The best part was, I was in the floor in pain and he still kept bringing me the ball. The ambulance came and he gave them the ball too. He is adorable. It was not his fault. He is such a good boy

I didn't start letting them mouth my fingers when they were little pups. I gave them safe chew toys and played ball or frisbee with them instead. I wish I played a stuffed toy with them as I asked them to play nicely with the pig,etc.so they could learn their names like Chaser did. Just don't let them mouth your fingers!

Yes they can for short periods. Train and explain and let ‘em chew up a couple of stuffed buddies! And a couple hours crated while you shop with a bit of h2o is fine!😊 I’m retired and make certain that my Zeke has everting he needs! Not all BC parents can and these guys give great options 👍👍👍👍🐶🐶🐶other wise Zeke and hang together almost always! I'm retired so i can spend spend all my time with Zeke wich is why he joined our family! My twin sons moved out at 18 and wife works always so Zeke and i take care of each other every minute!!❤❤ He is 4 years and understands English and spanish for all his commands!! all of you bc parents know thats possible (words are words)

I hate the thought of leaving an animal that depends on you...emotionally and physically. Just like kids....cuz I hav a few. Part of me (and all of my kids) want a dog...but the rational part of me wants to be real. I can't deny the want....but I can deny the fit with my lifestyle. Edit: I work from home....and need to actuallly get work done during the day. So what do I do with a play companion that doesn't go to school?

What do you do if your dog gets hurt and needs to be put on strict bed rest 🤔 how are you going to make sure they stay calm and inactive when you can't be watching them, or a puppy who hasn't had the chance to learn the difference between what's okay and not okay to eat or where to potty. And what that it's ok for them to be left alone in a crib for 8 hours a night?? I say this is 100000% sarcasm. Some people don't understand that not all dogs are the same. I have one that loves his crate and goes in there even when I'm home. I have another that hates his crate but does great left in my bedroom for a few hours. I have another one that never wants to come into the house because he loves to run. It absolutely depends on the owner of the dog and how it's being or not being trained. I've seen plenty that are vicious because the owners put them in fighting rings vs a pup from the same litter who was raised as a family dog. I'm so sick of people blaming the breed. (And again, the first part of this comment was entirely sarcastic. Lol)
