Took a bit of time off to re-energise and reflect, but I think it's time to put the foot on the pedal now 😁 After you've watched the video, I've got a question - which would you now be more likely to buy - newer midrange or older flagship? Actually, around 2020 - 2021, this is exactly the type of research I went through to buy my most recent phone, and I ended up buying a Sony Xperia 10 iii. Maybe being in Canada affected this choice, but I found that flagships did not drop in price (either used or "sale" priced) to match the mid-ranger until the 3rd year. The first 1.5 years barely touched the price of a flagship, unless you were looking at a badly used unit. Also affecting my choice was the fact that 5G had just started getting into mid-rangers, and I insisted on 5G to insure support by service providers.

The battery isn't necessarily a deal breaker. These days you can't just swap it, but they can replace it at a repair shop for a fair price within the day. That's how I got my old Samsung A5 to serve me for almost 5 years now. The poor thing is about to physically disintegrate at this point from wear but the internals are fine. I plan to replace it soon with a phone you can flash with LineageOS, so no warranty either way and the community gives faster and more system updates than the vendor would. It all points to an old flagship for me. Thanks Arun, I didn't even consider that option!

- Older battery can always be replaced; - software can be upgraded if you are tech savvy enough/it doesn't really matter if you already have a bug free experience in the current OS setup (Playstore takes care of most of the updates in terms of usability of software more and more nowadays) - Vibration motor, brighter display, fast shutter speed of camera and processing--these things matter a lot in daily use As midranges are purposefully made as "mid rangers" so that it doesn't cannibalizes the flagship market. It's always a better deal to go for older flagships imo.

Camera is pretty tricky to compare though, especially in Xiaomi's case. The Mi 10 Pro can probably even outdo Xiaomi 12 Pro in many scenarios, and its camera setup is essentially the same as Mi Note 10 which was a mid-range phone from late 2019 (Mi Note 10's camera was a huge outlier considering its price. Even today, it's hard to find a new phone that rivals it at its launch price, let alone its current price).

New midrange is the 🗝️ if you on a budget. And not the "midrange" from samsung or apple. Go for the ones with better chipset that's close to flagship. Used old flagships have so much disadvantages aside from shorter security support. You're paying 2x-3x the price for slightly better camera than midrange. Also, you need to hunt for those still in good condition.

Fair warning, I have an s9+ and it lags crazy these days and battery is like 2-3 hrs screen on time. Thats after 4 years of usage so it might be better new, idk. But with no software or security support anymore(and plus my phone carrier is about to drop my phone bc of the volte stuff), im not sure the headphone jack is worth it. I was sad to see it go, and didn't want to upgrade when I had the chance(now I'm saving for a new phone lol) bc of the headphone jack, but I realized I don't use it anymore. My wireless earbuds are a much better experience. Sd card support hurts much more to lose but I already own 2 type c thumb drives, so I can just back up my files that way. An extra step, but not a deal breaker. Id say, if you have the funds to do so, go for something newer.

I would also say that in terms of hardware the flagships completely dominate, it isnt a tie like he suggested. Fingerprint sensors, facial unlock, wireless charging, _vastly_ better haptics, better wireless chipsets and antennas for wifi and bluetooth, better speakers, etc. Midrangers dont even come close to these features. What they do have is a headphone jack and SD card support, but thats about it.

I've had both flagships and mid-range phones, and I've tried low-end phones as well. Mid-rangers are the sweet spot. Everything you need, nothing you don't. With flagships, you get bells and whistles in the software (like nicer ringtones and fancier transitions), better cameras and screens, better build quality, less or no software bloat, of course the latest SoCs and the fastest and most RAM, and the intangible: it's somewhat a status symbol in many parts of the world. Low-end phones, well, it's like buying a cheap car, right? Better yet, look at smartphones like you would look at a high end BMW, a Camry or Corolla, and a bare bones Nissan Versa.

I'd much rather have a one year old flagship, especially Samsung. You're getting a lot for about at least 50% to 70% less of the starting price. That's what happens to the S series. And I couldn't care less about the warranty, the only way that warranty is going to help you is if the hardware somehow has some faults (just like in your example). And it's nice to have 4 years of major updates, even on the mid range phones, but for what? After the third major update your phone is most likely to move much slower, given that it is Android and a mid-range, in the end.

As someone who is still on a Samsung Galaxy s9 plus, I appreciate seeing these comparisons. My phone still chuggin along, though I think I am getting to a point of needing newer flagship. They last so long tbh as long as they are cared for proper. And I've still got the original battery in it. 🤘thanks for the video!

4GB RAM contradicts software updates. I use OnePlus 6t from 2018, 8GB RAM and I consider that minimum for new hardware. RAM is cheap and often is a limiting factor.

Just the battery degradation is something to think more about. The problem with some brands is that they will sell their devices cheaper but won't let you have the essentials it's like here's a phone and a cable and f off now will you. I wouldn't really go for the previous flagships unless you're capable of taking more risks. 5 months after official release is more than enough time to gather feedbacks from customers that's also a thing to remember.

The flaw at 4:25 is that companies making flagships “assume you have expensive wireless earphones” but the thing is, wireless isn’t a better format for headphones; it can’t transmit lossless audio and it will always be worse value and sound than a comparable wired set because they have to have a built in DAC and wireless transmitter, a wired set can use the already great DAC your phone comes with and possibly a professional external DAC which will ALWAYS sound better than a wireless one, as someone who streams from TIDAL using nice open back headphones and a Dragonfly Black DAC, the removal of a headphone jack becomes more of a problem the more you spend on audio gear, which people who buy flagship phones are much more likely to drop more cash on.

Great video as always, however I have my own thoughts about it. I have a POCO X3 Pro and it is a great phone for my needs and what I was looking in a phone; flagship phones have lost appeal to me, my phone has: headphone Jack, IR blaster, micro SD slot, a Snapdragon 860, 8GB of RAM, a 120Hz refresh rate and an average camera of 48Mpx. Flagships don't have half of the features that I mentioned anymore and I do use them and the camera is not an important feature for me. Flagships cost way more and even that they look and feel awesome, it might have some slight changes but that is all.

With the software support side of things (the phone getting updates), as long as the community still supports it, it'll never be behind. People will develop new updates for them through firmware/software modifications, and thus make them last way past the manufacturers own cut-off date for updates

I got an older flagship for my previous phone and loved the advantages, but it only had one year left of security updates before I was vulnerable for years. It was such a stupid reason to replace an otherwise perfectly functional phone. I ended up getting a new base S21, because of that new Samsung software support window, and because it was a flagship on sale without costing nearly as much as an S21 Ultra. I think that's my sweet spot for now

Yes, buying renewed phones is sustainable but so is buying a flagship phone and keeping it for 4-5 years before upgrading. You may as well get the most use out of it for the money you paid - providing it isn't damaged or broken during that time. I had never had a flagship before the S9+ and was rather apprehensive but over 4 years later, I have no regrets.

Just to add flagships tend to have greater software to hardware performance compatibility. you will notice this in games a mid range phone with an updated processor will perform better compared to an two year old flagship phone but that performance will degrade the longer you use your device while playing you will start to see fps go down at 60% battery where as flagships tend to be consistent until it reaches 15% battery life
