I've never seen anyone create this much good will for peavey and show so many of their older amps fairly and professionally. They should hire you

Because a lot of other amp brand owners always thought Peavey's we're junk etc. When infact a lot of Peavey's sound amazing out of the box and built like a tank, like all the old school Peavey's are. Now people are starting to catch on, with the Ultra's, XXX, JSX'S etc which I personally like better then my 5150 II. They have that different punchy tone that the 5150's don't have. Plus still to this day, the mentioned amps hang with or sound better then a large amount of what's out now for high gain amps.

The Classic 2x12 was a standard giging amp for us metal heads in the mid 90s. It was cheap, durable and handled a beer spill like a champ! I went through 2 50s and sometimes threw it on top of a v30 loaded crate 4x12 for the bigger shows. Cheapest great sounding bar rig I used back then. 🤘🏼

I've been running a Classic 50 2x12 combo for metal on occasion live and in my studio. The secret I use is a DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 pedal with the gain at 1 o'clock and the level at 12 o'clock straight into the 'Normal' input. The 'Normal' channel is already set up to deliver as much of that 'metal' saturation as acceptable, and the pedal gives it that push and clarity so that every note is clear. Wish you hear it. You'd like it. Great video! Now I need that little head in my collection.

I think pushing old school style amps are even better sounding for high gain. George Lynch had one of the best high gain tones in history pushing an old plexi with distortion and overdrive pedals. Strangely enough I just remembered he used a Peavey Classic 100 on the Shadowlife tour! I kinda want one now. I once read people refer to peavey classics as between vox and Marshall

I don’t use pedals as a rule. Sometimes I’ll use a tremolo for a certain song. I play in an original rock band. I like this amp as it suits my style. Clean for rhythm and distorted for leads. I utilize the channel/boost pedal for this. The overdrive pedals give amps a more muddy sound. I use this in combination with the Peavey C212 cabinet. It gives me that “Mississippi Marshall” sound. Very versatile amp.

That's definitely true about Peavey and low mids. As a Peavey fanatic I've owned everything from an early '80s Century to a 6505 and I've had to dial WAY back on the low mids with every one of them regardless of whether it was a solid-state or tube amp. I'm guessing it has to do partly with components used and they've had the same guys designing them for eons.

Damn dude this is one of the better-sounding amps you've had on your channel to my ears. It seems like the clean and gain channels are balanced enough that you can get a usable sweet spot on the EQ that works for both. Question - did Peavey fix the footswitch delay when changing channels? That always killed me live with these amps.

Awesome video awesome product I hate to gripe, maybe I'm just an idiot and just misunderstanding the language being used, but just to be clear there is no amp that has true power amp distortion going through the FX loop because true power amp distortion is post output transformer, trying to run that through the loop would create a hard-wired feedback loop LOL. you wouldn't be able to hear anything but a loud screeching sound.

I use my Peavey Classic 30 with a Marshal 1960a 4x12, plus attenuator and it gives a great Marshal heavy Rock sound, regardless of whichever pedals that you use, the attenuator is the most important as it allows you to fully exploit the head without blown your ears off the side of your head.

Thanks for the best video I've seen on the MH20. Like you, I started with a Classic 30 combo years ago. Been through a lot of amps. I keep 5 in my studio that rotate from time to time: Victory V30, Fender 65 PRRI, Boogie MKV 25, Egnl Fireball 25, and the Peavey MH 20. The Peavey has stayed where I have moved on from PRS, Vox and Marshall. For reference, I'm a blues/rocker. Don't have the chops for metal. So consider that.

How would you describe the lead channel ? Is it fizzy ?
@mikedwiles
@mikedwiles 2 жыл бұрын
to Hkm Z: I would say it depends on the guitar/pickups. I think it sounds best with humbuckers regarding the lead channel. I don't find the amp to be nearly as fizzy or even as finicky about pickups as a Marshall DSL at lower volumes. I don't find the amp's lead channel to be fizzy at all. I found I can get a great Marshall tone using the clean channel with an Xotic SL Drive in front of the amp.

A couple years ago they had one of those classic 20 mini heads on sale in a local shop I go to every once in a while. I think around 200 it was the last one they had it was 199 or something. I should’ve got it. It was the oval logo but for cleans and Skynyrd like southern rock it can’t be beat for the money . I imagine an excellent pedal platform also . Yeah I should’ve picked that sucker up . It would’ve done the fender thing for mono price money at 200 bucks . It still had the plastic over the chrome. Excuse me I’ll be kicking myself now .

Our "band room" amp is an old Classic 50 combo. Throw a Line 6 or a Metal Master pedal in the effects loop and it'll do a metal thing. The Hot Rod Fender/Marshall mashup gain channel does a 70's jam rock thing pretty well. The cleans are pleasant and the reverse is decent. It doesn't do anything really amazingly well but it does a lot of things. They are also common enough and cheap enough that if it gets swiped by a junkie it's not a heartbreaking loss.

My story with the classic series is similar, just without the pop-punk part...... I got a 1x12 combo with a blown stock speaker, and I'd have never kept that speaker in it anyway. What I ended up doing was ripping the chassis out completely and building it a two-tone checkered head cab and a matching speaker cab using this 12" pine that I already had and a piece of ply from an amped cabinet that got destroyed in a car accident for the baffle. I swap the speakers around a lot, sometimes it's a V30 and a T75, sometimes it's a K100 and an Eminence Swamp Thang. Mine's an older version, the EQ sucked on those, so I just dime all 3 eq knobs (pots are variable resistors, dimed, the impedance is zero, so it's as close to having it out of the circuit as you can get) and set the gain around halfway then smash it up front with a truly clean clean boost. It gets a hell of a snarly voice at high gain settings, sounding a lot like a preamp section from a hot-rodded Superlead into an AC30 output section. It's incredibly easy to mix with drums and bass as it is, using just one E609 in front of one of the speakers, just off the edge of the dustcap, on-axis, 4 fingers back. I keep the master volume at like a hair past half, just to really move the speakers, but the output section is still mostly clean. It's way tighter than one would expect from this type of old-school style amp. It's my number one for recording.

Wait...Is this Peavey's best mini head even for metal? I am really considering getting one of these over a 6505mh and that is a crazy idea. Is the updated 'fix' to get power amp distortion worth buying the newer one or can you get great results with the old oval logo? It's not really documented anywhere that I can find how these amps have changed over the years. Seems to me this is better than the DSL20HR, or am I crazy? I have a red stripe bandit, but I find myself lusting for more Peavey. haha. Great channel btw. I wonder what effect you alone has on the used Peavey prices!

Whilst I haven't owned a classic, I've had a peavey vypyr and the classic model was always my go to on that bad boy. This video just shows how versatile and awesome this amp is. I think it'd be a good idea if they offered it in different colours/finishes though!

You got a new subscriber with me Bro. 6505 series have been my fave since they arrived. To me nothing beats them I’m terms of shear brutality

Never had a Peavey Classic, but I once had a Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue. It sounded great cranked for classic rock tones, but for high gain I would push with a DS-1.

Hey Kyle as much as I love the 5150/6505 I think I even love the Peavey Classic a bit more, just wondering how you feel the Classic compares to the Classic boosted

Subscribed. Thanks for what you do bro. Excellent/ awesome videos. Always surprised that channels that should have more recognition don't, but the shitty b.s channels that like to talk shit always have way more subscribers. Weird, but anyhow bro. Good stuff and once again, thank you. Good informative stuff 😊

Wow. I still use (and love) a Peavey Transformer with Transtube tech as my main rig. This really shocked me at how good it took those pedals to get some really crushing metal sounds. You really know what your doing. Thanks

My favourite thing about your channel is how you focus on rhythm playing rather than OTT shred wankery like most people do.

Honestly, Peavey was made for Metal. Especially the late 80’s and early 90’s models like the Ultra 60 and any of the black and green/turquoise lined heads This sounds great too though! I have a Peavey classic tweed 412ES, so maybe it’s time to grab a classic head!

Had a Classic 50 4x10 combo and regret selling. Had incredible sonic quality. This and the 5150 are their hallmark amps. No one can talk shit on these two models.

Every peavey I’ve owned had a lot of gain. Even the old solid state low price deals. I had so many of those. It looked like a great full dead stack. Everyone always talked trash on peavey. I never understood it

Loved my Classic 50 2x12. Had WGS Veteran 30's loaded into it. Sold it to purchase a Vox AC30. It might be blasphemous to say... but, in some ways the Classic 50 was the better sounding and performing amp (IMO). I like what the Vox does enough to not undo that past decision. But, there are days that I get a Peavey Classic craving.

I agree with this. It's a well known workhorse, but also a criminally underrated amp.

Do you suggest to get one for home studio for old school metal tone? I can get one pretty cheap right know . Your video is the only where it sounds like a metal beast, on other is pretty less gainy amp.
