I crashed my Phantom 3, and my Camera and Gimball broke off. I was curious to see if my drone would fly without those two items attached. What I found out, is that the DJI app will not work without them. You fly without the smart phone and use the controller only.

S1 (right toggle) does P-Mode/GPS Mode (up), A-Mode/Att Mode (middle), F-Mode/IOC Mode (down). It always has. You really need to read the manual before offering advice to the masses. S2 has never done that.

You should still be able to fly with the app. Disconnect the rest of the gimbal mount and you can fly using google maps in the app to see your location. You will also still have telemetry as well. Some long distance pilots do this for saving weight.

maybe. When mine crashed (human error), the video cable and antenna were ripped out of the mother board. So now the app doesn’t work. The drone fly’s but only @4-500 ft in any direction

HACK AND RIDE BIKES it will not work becaouse it just wont get the camara to get connected so the app wont allow you to fly it at all this is the best solution or temp solution to still use your drone while you have enought to fix the camara ..!!

yes you need it to operate the app. you can also get an ipad to control it as well if you have no space. better start deleting pics/videos to make room!

why not just install a FPV camera with a 5.8ghz VTX? would cost like 50 bucks and take 30 minutes to solder up....or just get the gimbal repaired like everyone else does.

Of course you can still use the app, everything will still work except the camera functionality.

It can but there are some important negatives. First the signal of the controller goes through the mainboard of gimbal to the drone. So the light stays red on the controller showing unbinded althought it can still fly. When flying it looses very easy the signal so it returns back and last you can fly it around 30 meters height and 50 distance.... If someone found a way to avoid all these pls comment . because like mine phantom the gimbals motherboard is not working and its too expensive to buy

Jeremy or anyone who can help, I removed the camera after a crash and I left only gimbal mainboard connected (like in video)- I can fly with controller but when I try to connect via app is just connecting and reconnecting the whole time. Green light is flashing on gimbal for couple of seconds and then comes the red light =>that's the moment it disconnects from and starts from begin the green flashing. Do you think the mainboard of the gimbal is defect?. thanks

lol...you're flying IFR or VFR...sounds like the drone has turned into a weapon:) It sucks cuz I did the same thing...the camera crashed but the drone survived. You'd think they'd make it easier to replace parts.

Perfect example of a pilot who knows little about his drone and has probably little flying skills: *1. Doesn't know all the controls:* You should get to know all the controls before you fly. Always. With any drone. *2. Says Atti mode is "crazy":* It's not, it really isn't. You'll find advice everywhere that you should start with a toy drone to get to know the controls with a drone that is cheap and hard to fly. If you learn to fly with manual throttle and full manual control, then Atti mode will almost feel like cheating because it's still easy. *3. Crashed his drone in the first place:* I mean, come on. If you, like I said, learned flying with a toy drone and always fly your drone carefully it should be pretty much impossible to crash it. If, however, you started with this drone and never even got any good skills on it because you were just using GPS mode and maybe even just flying at high altitudes, where there are no obstacles, then you simply are a bad pilot due to lack of practice. And then you crahs your drone and lose your gimbal.

probably not. if there is an issue with the gimball, most likely gps is not working.

GPS is in the top of the bird not in the camera gimbal. Of course DJI has routed all kinds of things thru the gimbal to force you to buy another overpriced camera from them but hey that's what you get from a toy manufacturer.

The drone cannot lose signal after losing the camera. Why? Because it has an automatic limiter switch that prevent the drone from flying more than 500’ in any direction , even up. Not sure about footage. It may be 300’. But whatever it is, its boring. I believe that when you remount the camera properly, all operations will reset. But that is just a theory. Crashed drone last week. You dont show how far it will go, but I bet it won’t go far.
