It’s not the volts alone that set the time of charge for the car, it’s the available amps, watts, that set the speed of the charge. Max amps on 120 volts is 20 amps, 2400 watts max at the wall or generator outlet. Max amps, typical on 240 volts, 50 amp outlet is 12000 watts. Big difference.

I saw one here on You Tube where the guy bought another identical battery pack , mounted it on a trailer and wired it in such a way as it parallels the car's battery effectively doubling its range and then had an on board 15Kw generator to charge it up effectively making it a hybrid. It worked . I think he bypassed thr charging port when hooking the second battery in it. He even had the cooling system for the battery installed also.

What is the difference cost between generator and grid?
@Aircam732 жыл бұрын
Grid will usually be much cheaper. Around TX we get around12 to 14 cents a kWh so to charge the car from zero to full would be around $10 to $12. To charge the car from a generator from 0 to 300 miles would take around 15 hours and go through two tanks of gas or around 14 gallons of fuel. To fill it up with the generator at $2.50 a gallon gas would be around $35. This would give Tesla around 21 mpg when charging off the Generator. Not bad but charging from the generator would be for non normal situations like when the grid is down or if you are out camping where no electricity was available.

@dylanmanka8795 Жыл бұрын
Well the energy has to come from a PURE Sine Wave inverter/generator. An unwritten rule is 80% max capacity for generators for surges/other. Really for peak efficiency, most gas generators are capped to 50% max efficiency. At -about 3 miles/KWH after efficiency losses converting the power through the charger. That gives you about 10 miles of charge per hour. This truly is a last resort. If a Tesla Battery pack is 80KWH, expect about a 24+ hour charge time minimum.

We agree having multiple ways to fuel a car is nice. An EV can be fueled from the sun, propane, gasoline, diesel, wind, the grid, Natural gas or even a hamster on a wheel. Plus any diesel generator can fuel an EV running on diesel, vegetable oil or motor oil. The downside of the Mercedes is the 1,000+ moving parts compared to the Tesla 20 moving parts. Any one of those thousands of moving part breaking will render the car inoperable.

@Aircam7323 күн бұрын
@@cipinassssss There is no denying that a pre 1985 diesel is going to be easier to fix than an EV but the simple fact is that EVs would require far less fixing because of how simple they really are. With only 20 moving parts there is far less to go wrong and won't need to be fixed nearly as often. Plus diesel cars catch fire at a rate far greater than EVs so if it is a fire you are worried about an old diesel is over 20 times more likely to catch fire than an EV. With HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS of lithium batteries in homes, cars, watches, phones, tablets, drills, vacuums, laptops, toys, lawn equipment, etc the chances of a short are so small that BILLION of people sleep with a lithium battery 2 feet from their head every night.

Question still stands. It can charge a electric car. How long to charge half charge. Full charge time. Not miles.
@Aircam7323 күн бұрын
They use miles because different cars charge at different rates depending on the battery size. It is simple to calculate as the Model Y and S have very close battery capacities of around 82 kWh. If they used the large generator near peak operating power of 9,000 watts. If you divide 82,000 watts by 9,000 watts you get a little over 9 hours to fully charge the cars. With losses and not running it at max capacity lets say 10 hours. So, 5 hours to half full and 2.5 hours for a 1/4 of a tank.
