Finally! One of the off road KZbinrs (besides Nate) is doing up a Land Rover. I'm in full support of this decision. Some Ashcroft 4.11 gears, lockers, a set of 33's and you're golden. The rear articulation on a D1 is insane (cones and spring retainers required).
@donhappel956626 күн бұрын
i really wish somebody would do a proper long-travel spring for the Rover. All sorts of super-stiff "overloader" springs, but for some reason the Rover world has decided they're happy just using cones and short springs. I'm sure with enough research I could find something off another vehicle that would work, but it's super-frustrating.

On one of our first dates I took my wife (she still married me) to Ecology Auto wrecking looking for parts to keep my LTD wagon running. I went to move the a/c compressor that I assumed was discharged, pulled out my knife and cut the hone. It then discharged freon and oil all over her. She laughed about it, still does. And now we have been married 47 years, what a blessing. And I love your verses on the end of your videos.

Talking of your date with Shanna to pull a part sends me down memory lane. My first date with my wife was a hay ride and on our second date we went to a bayou nearby and , using a spotlight to spot them , shot snakes. Cotton mouth water moccasins. I knew then that she was a keeper. I liked to give the snakes a sporting chance so I used a 12 gauge side by side shotgun.

As an owner from a 1991 discovery that my dad passed to me and love to bits since i grew in it. PLEASE dont cut it's roof, this poor girl just needs some love. Prolly the fact it doesnt have too much power might be due the braking sistem aint working properly, and the ecu is tripping and cutting down power. True is that their whiring sistem aint the best on earth, mine had some gremlins as well untill i decided to start re-whiring the car starting from the back to the front, but with some love and care, they keep going and dont give up. Ours in 33 years only once had to visit the dealer, and was due a malfunction on the ac unit, aside of that, the engine still hasnt skipped a beat, and never gave us any mechanical headache despite being well used in it's stock form in all the off road trails we has here in spain. Cant wait to see the future upgrades on it!

Spot on with the thermostat removal. One other effect is that with no restriction in the thermostat housing, the coolant will be flowing too fast through the radiator to transfer heat. In a pinch, you can pull a stuck thermostat and partially clamp the upper hose slighty to slow the coolant.

ALL Rovers leak oil = 'What do you call a Land Rover that doesn't leak ? Empty..." I have that exact vehicle with a 5 speed - 1996 with lockers and 33's. I've been modding it and wheeling it in CO forever. The 4.0 will run forever. Check the motor mounts, put 2-3" lift captive springs on it, work up good bars and sliders and either get lockers or weld the rear. Find stronger axles or use a light foot - you can grenade the swivel ball u-joints if you lock the front - I run a limited slip front and Detroit rear (yes, old school stuff). You'll need to sawzall the fender wells for 33" tires. Have fun

Front digs are the coolest factory feature on these..... Sneaky trick is to dis-engage t-case center differential lock, then engage the rear driveshaft mounted parking brake, then power the front end around. Learned this trick back in 1995 in a new one a pal of mine bought. Works killer !!

HI both, Im British and a happy Landrover owner for the last 15 years. My first was a 1991 early type 3 door stick shift. Unlike American markets mine and most UK and European markets, it was a turbo diesel. It was a 90 MPH "car" so fast enough for legal UK roads. It ran happily on new bulk buy cooking oil, but with an added splash of "petrol" OK Gas LOL I now have the smaller FREELANDER turbo Diesel with the factory-fitted BMW Turbo Diesel and auto gearbox but cannot run it on anything but decent diesel, but I add a "Cetane" booster for a bit more power. OK, I love my Landrover but I am British. lol So will be watching your progress as you show us all. Good luck on future Matts offroad games. Why not paint the roof In the English flag just to annoy the haters, my kind of style. lol

My father started a salvage yard in the early 60’s and I worked with him for over 40 years before he passed away and we crushed all the cars and the first car he ever bought was the last car crushed with the last car he bought. We had an average of 450 vehicles in the yard and had as many as 800 . We had people who pulled all their own parts and we installed a lot of parts and delivered parts over a 6 county area .

My Series II Disco had center diff lock and front and rear axle locks, it was absolutely UNSTOPPABLE! MY 4.0 got 24 MPG on the highway and once I switched to 100% Synthetic oils, never leaked a drop! Power was pretty good, could smoke the front tires at a stop light, or spin donuts on dry pavement! Only issue was the transfer case took some secret sauce that nobody could get, and it burned up!
@donhappel956626 күн бұрын
There's nothing special about the oil needed for the LT230. In fact, it's by far the most robust piece of the Rover drivetrain. All gear mechanical transfer case with a PTO optional output and locking center dif. They run on standard old 75w90.

Blue. The restriction the thermostat offers allows slower flow or a restricted/regulated flow through the radiator also. When unregulated the coolant goes through the radiator too fast to cool it down. So it just slowly keeps building heat till poof.
@callumkingunderwood6 күн бұрын
Those LT230 transfer cases are pretty well liked in the UK as being strong and reliable units. They take chevy LS swaps through them, they take cummins 6BT swaps through them. Ashcroft also do a torsen diff upgrade for them which also preserves the locker functionality, just means you get a torsen for sand/wet, then can still lock up when you need it. Synchro Gearboxes in the UK also does a replacement partial spool you can fit within the stock diff carrier to turn it into a more traditional part time 4WD, but we like them full time here with the locker (locker on these transfer cases just locks the front output to the diff carrier, so if you had a spool that only engaged the rear, and enough stub parts to at least connect the front, hey look, full time rear and now the diff lock is the front engagement) The defenders as well as having the same rover axles as that discovery, could be optioned with "salisbury" axles, which were legit just right hand drop high pinion dana D60's. So a tougher drivetrain was certainly an option on the sister vehicle. likewise the r380 manual was always supposedly the better gearbox. Downside to both discovery and defender though, they were never available with front or rear lockers from factory, the discovery 2 does have a pretty decent electronic setup which does a pretty good job even with the centre diff unlocked (and most of the disco 2's had the shift linkage for the CDL removed) but its a british car with british electrical system that was fairly complex for its time so you can imagine what happens to that system eventually. With the terrain over here, swapping the diffs for torsens is often done rather than adding lockers, but eh, you can get the lockers. Otherwise, british driving doctrine for offroad is a lot of left foot braking to add a preload across an open diff
