@@JacksonGalaxy a laser and catnip toys were a life saver when i adopted my super nervous girl just over a year ago. Helped her come out of hiding and out of her shell so much. She's still an anxious little bean but she absolutely loves to play. We finish the cycle pointing to one of her other million toys that are always on the floor. She'll pounce and independently play and then she gets dinner. My cat adores that lil red dot. ❤ I have no "havoc" issues with her ever, but if I want her to MOVE HER BOTTOM, I gotta start with the laser. If I want her to "git off my bed already!", I gotta use the "red dot". I definitely let her "get" it, zoom around after it, jump a bit for it, hide it in corners, keep it moving in wavering circles, turn it off a bit. It's a real workout for us both--I have to run with her, including upstairs. She adores it. THEN and only then will she go for the squeak mouse, feathers, balls, whatever. This is also the one way I can get her onto the cat tree---she gets hidden treats and has to climb the whole thing at the end of all this previous stuff. Works. Every. Single. Time. Otherwise I would have a truely lovely feline loaf. 😁

Agreed. The laser pointer can't be all there is. I hide pieces of cooked chicken or bits of fish around the house under empty boxes or inside paper towel tubes. After they've had their exercise chasing the laser...I use it to guide them to the hidden treats that they can dig out and they feel like they've accomplished something. Of course, everyone has that one smart cat that will let the others chase the laser while SHE sniffs out all the treats, so sometimes there's nothing left for them to find, but I'm getting better at outsmarting that one.

The laser pointer is my 14-year-old girl's current favourite. She's 14, so whatever keeps her playful. I'm careful of her eyes. Bonus: you can run it up walls and on the ceiling, going wherever a flying insect would go. She's more into stalking and pouncing and less into running. At the end of our play session, I toss a couple of treats and follow their trajectory with the laser dot, so that she has a chance to "catch" it and experience a reward.

Thanks for the tip regarding cats that have a fixation with another cat. One of my three cats thinks that one of the other cats is his personal toy and stalks her a lot. They would play fight when he was a tiny kitten/young adolescent and it was fun to see them running around after each other. Now he's an adult (and everyone is sterilised) he still wants to play fight with her. She gets really mad at him and screeches at him if he corners her. She's quite a shy cat and I hate shouting at him as I feel it frightens her just as much it does him - who to tell the truth, doesn't give a stuff and will go after her again 2 mins. later. I'm going to try the laser trick to lure him away from her and play with him afterwards. Fingers crossed this works.

She knows exactly where it comes from, as she gets excited if she sees me pick it up and will look at me until I click the button, and then will immediately look for the laser. She's never shown frustration afterwards. In fact, I've noticed all her favorite play (with me) excludes the "pay off." (For example, her other favorite play is batting my hand from the other side of the shower curtain in the bathroom.) She's also my best hunter. Lived with a friend for a bit who had a mouse infestation, and she was the one catching them the most. I'm confident Shadow knows the difference between hunting a playing, and she enjoys both separately. In fact, after I adopted her, I found she really started to warm up to me after I played with her, even when she had plenty of real game. She just enjoys playing with me.

Just got my first cat she is 4 months old and I have been told since day 1 that laser pointers can be somewhat dangerous (in terms of them not being able to grab it) so I only use it for like 5 seconds at a time just to see her excitement then I instantly change back to my hands under a blanket, a ball, or whatever. She loves to stalk the dogs in the house and create her own problems where they do not need to be. It is only week 2 but I have not thought to use the pointer as a training tool to keep her from the dogs and this will probably change a lot. 3 year video but thank you very much!!!

I have a cat with CH and a cortical vision impairment. She LOVES the laser pointer and it is one of the few things she can obviously see. In fact we learned she had some residual vision by trying the laser (it doesn't make a sound) She struggles with feather toys etc. I always toss treats to her at intervals so she is completing the cycle. She lives for the sound of the drawer where the laser lives.

I think another concern is that some cats and dogs can become fixated on moving lights in general, which is pretty disruptive to daily life!
@animalashes3773 жыл бұрын
That's exactly my concern, and I have heard veterinary behaviorists talk about getting light-chasing dogs and cats in their practice that have developed OCD.

My Daisy cat is Obsessed with the laser pointer. Every time she hears the clinking of the pointer when we pick it up she come running to us lol I usually play with a wand toy after the pointer then give a treat. Loving your videos Jackson they have been really helpful for us and our kittens Harry, Daisy and Fleur 🥰

My cat couldn’t care for any of the feather toys, as soon as he catches it, he drops out and walks away. He does however beg for me to get the laser going so he can run, he doesn’t even like to catch it, he plays goalie and stops it from getting to the wall 😂😂 but always gets treats after

Same. One of my cats only wants to hunt and run. As soon as he touches the toy it's boring and he walks off if I dont start playing again. He is still a kitten tho so maybe it'll go away

I don't use just a laser toy but it is one thing I use. If I'm going to turn it off I move the pointer to somewhere the bug / prey could disappear (ie behind the scratching post) . This way the cat can either transition to the scratching post or at least run to the post and look around it. I've found my cat likes to change toys occasionally as well so I bring out different toys randomly for him to chase, catch, bite.

my cat loves it! There is a little keychain thing attached and as soon as she hears that she comes running, she knows the red dot comes from the lazer toy, she knows that she can't catch it but she doesn't care, she loves to jump at it on the wall the most. If I run the light under something and then ask her where it went she will start to meow and stalk around looking, if I wait too long she will come to me and paw at the hand holing the lazer. I just made sure my kids know never to point the lazer directly at the cat or near her eyes (or each others eyes) so no one gets hurt, they will run around the house with the thing!

I bought one for my cat, but my dog flips out every time we try to use it and scares the cat off 😂

Great advice. I’ve avoided them but our cat loves to get our attention by scratching the chairs that we prefer he avoid. Don’t want to startle him when he does it so we’ll try laser redirect, flip to cat dancer then a treat once he subdues the feathers. We always know when the feather or the fuzzy worm is toast. He chomps down in it and proudly carries it into the kitchen and waits for a little treat.

btw, many of the lasers on ebay say they are pet safe, but are ast strong as 1000mw, which is string enough to burn things and is definitely not safe for your pets. im nered lol

When my roommate and I were introducing our cats we used a lazer pointer to let them both play in the same room and being able to watch eachother play at their own level. Also I can barely touch the lazer pointer to move it without two cat running up and staring at me

I blew my cat's mind when I showed him the pen the lazer comes from and pretended to shake the red dot out of it and into my hand. Now he actually seeks out the lazer pen itself and rolls it around when he wants to play with it. I also like to hide a treat on the floor without him seeing and then aim the dot on it so he thinks he caught it

My cat loves the laser. And to round up the cycle what I do is that I put a treat on the floor when she isn't looking and bringing the laser on to it. This way she can finally catch it and eat it! Thanks Jackson! You are awesome!

My cats adore the red dot. They also know that I'm doing it. They hear the click of the button and come running. All other toys forgotten in an instant. It also keeps them engaged much longer.

Dang I haven't watched the vid but I feel like I'm about to redo playtime. I use a laser to start but always finish with a real toy so they can "win". Edit:😄 surprise surprise I don't have to be ashamed 😅. Great vid

My kitten used to be super mellow and he was always just chilling or sleeping. It was really hard to get him to play. I've learned he likes to chase toys on the ground, he rarely jumps (even on counters). He has had some problems with his ears and stomach, which has now improved by a lot (the ears are still a bit work in progress, we're going for a check up to see if his ears still gather as much yeast as it used to), and I think these problems made him not to want to play. He liked bottle corks and the laser pointer was the and only thing that got him to run. That and our other kitten who loves every single toy they have. But now that his problems are getting better he likes to play and semi-run after feather -toys (sometimes he actually plays and sometimes runs after the toy and then just looks at it once caught). I liked the laser pointer when that was the only active toy he liked but now we don't play with it anymore. And yes, after the laser pointing play I offered him some stuffed toys and others but all he wanted was more laser pointer :D

I played with my kittie with a laser toy, when I turned it off he was very upset and wandered around the house for 20 minutes meowing. I read that it activated his prey drive and he was upset because he didn't catch it. It went in the garbage.

My kitty loves the laser pointer. My older ones did not get into it when they were kittens but my new kitty really loves it. I think it all has to do with personality of the cat if they will like it or not. When she hears the click of the pointer going on, she is looking all over the place for it. She runs 100 miles an hour to get to that little red dot. It's awesome. But good advice on not stopping there. They need to actually physically catch something to satisfy their desires.

My cat loves the laser. I mounted it to a ball-swivel joint on a small board inside her catio. It's powered by a car battery and has a large 2" push-button she can step on with her paw. The 6" stick on the pointer allows her to swivel it and point it at birds and mice in the back yard from the safety of her outdoor enclosure. Until now I never knew a cat had an "evil laugh" but every time she leans on that button and I see an explosion of feathers in the back yard, I know I'm doing "cat parenting" right.
