I have little “sharpening” experience, but do have experience in a job shop and maintenance shop. You will love the lathe and the capabilities it opens to you in building tooling and fixtures. While I have and will continue to do tool posts grinding when needed on the lathe I take great pains to protect the machine, so much so I believe it will be impractical to use the lathe as an arbor driving system. I keep my welding and grinding separate from my machine area. As the dust will find a way in every space of the machine. However will soon find that with the lathe building a stand alone system you described will be fairly easy while keeping the lathe free for the other task. Your going to love having a lathe in your tool kit.

Thanks so much for the encouragement. I appreciate your input to take excellent care of the machine. It doesn't make sense to invest in a nice piece of equipment and then use it in such a way that it degrades in function and value. Someone else mentioned a wood lathe, maybe if this idea pans out it would make sense to move it over to a form factor more like one of those. We'll see. Thanks again.

Great idea. I have three lathes in my shop and I’d never thought about getting a mandrel to fit my wheels. Two of them are metal lathes , But the one that really would work is my variable speed wood lathe.

If you have any thoughts on the best way to capture 2 or 3 wheels on one shaft please let me know.

@@capnmatt41 I was thinking of a steel 5/8 mandrel that could be grabbed in my 4 jaw self centering chuck and then kept with a hole in the other end that would be held by the tail stock.

@@buffalojones341 right on. Any ideas on how would you clamp the wheels on that mandrel?

I wound consider a threaded rod to mount the wheels in so that nuts & flange washers can be used to determine spacing and fix the wheels in place. 5/8" or thereabouts seems like a decent place to start, as you can easily build up that diameter but not easily reduce it. I would picture it with lowest grits on the leftmost side, progressively getting finer as you move right wards through the progression. My .02, interesting idea.

I love spherical washers😎 Lathes are awesome. Just used my PM lathe and Mill to make “slipakniven” style extensions for my Tormeks with 10” CBN and leather hones. The new Tormek KS123 makes things even easier! Greetings from SoCal 😎

We will see this on Thursday night grind nice to be a pioneer great start . Never used a lathe so if you put 3 wheels on will you need a bearing on the end what will support the end of the shaft where the 3 wheels are on.

I've shifted my Thursday night time to hosting events with the Guild so updates on this project may be more sporadic here on KZbin. Great point about the other end, my plan would be to use a live center in the tailstock to support the shaft. Thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback. Also I used my lathe for the very purpose of making the arbors etc. for perfect fit where needed.

Sounds like you want to add a vfd to your grinder to get more speed control. Should be a few hundred $

My understanding is that a vfd needs to be paired with a three phase motor to get variable speed control.
