There are two large species of bugs in the water here that may have attracted the attention of the praying mantis. The water bug and the Backswimmers. And there's more than a dozen of them. It's also called a water wasp or a water bee. The peculiarity of the Backswimmers is that it often comes up to breathe. It's likely that it could have made the praying mantis swim.

Pretty sure a lot of animals can swim even if they aren’t built for the water, like dogs, however, they may not be able to swim well and have a higher risk of drowning.(mantis should be fine though)

Hippos can't swim they can only walk on the bottom of the water Cricket's definitely can't swim, from experience having a pet frog, just getting crickets wet will drown them Snails and slugs can't swim either
