Think they did a tournament where every card is unlimited and the top decks were just full of super overpowered card advantage old Spell cards, like Graceful Charity, Painful Choice, etc. But another thing to note is that those overpowered Spell cards were not as overpowered as they are today, especially at the time of their release.

Yeah like Painful Choice was a staple but anyone who played old Yu-Gi-Oh would tell you that it was clunky to use a lot of the time, because you weren't sure which cards you're gonna throw forever in the GY that you might need later on in the duel However in modern Yu-Gi-Oh it's even more game-winning than Maxx C or Grass, and would some decks ABSURDLY broken (one example is Drytrons but there are plenty others) Card of Safe Return is a prime example, garbage in old Yu-Gi-Oh but broken now (i usually don't like to mention it because people will default to saying it would be fine if it had a HOPT)

The reason I thought of it is because it's an Enraged Battle Ox reprint And the entire deck is barbeque themed, And Crooked Cook is ya'know a cook.

Things that can give you a bunch of life each turn are usually pretty decent in MTG (at least in the sideboard if nothing else), keeps you alive against aggro and burn so you can turn it around.

It would be good in yugioh if they gave you more. If a Yugioh card gave you 3000 life points, but most at most give you maybe 800 on a spell (Equivalent of 2 life in mtg), 1 card for 2 life and no other effect in a game where nothing costs mana is downright unusable, it could come up in certain burn strategies since a lot of burn cards in yugioh also equally burn you, or you need to live more turns but thats the only deck i can think where your life matters. Life point gain (And minor burn) matter in the side deck due to how yugiohs time rules work and game 3 can go to life points a lot of the time.

Pure Burn, sure. Red Deck Wins? Life gain on its own is not good enough. You need cards that impact the board AND gain life, e.g. Thragtusk, Lightning Helix, Timely Reinforcements. Gaining 5 life in magic is the equivalent of gaining 2000 LP in YGO: are there any good YGO cards that impact the board and gain 2000?

How would Dimensionhole work in Link format? Use it on your link monster in one of the extra monster zone then make a different Link to deny the 2nd zone. Most likely absolutely terrible but I'm wondering if it would even work

I'd assume it would just treat the link zone to be in use, but you don't have any arrows so you wouldn't get to Link Summon again.

When Link Monsters were first released, all pre-existing cards that mention just "Monster Zones" (i.e. Dimensionhole, Ground Collapse, Zany Zebra) were ruled to apply only to "Main Monster Zones" because they weren't balanced around the Extra Monster Zone mechanic. The only reason Dimensionhole doesn't reflect that in its current text (unlike the other 2 cards) is because it's ancient and hasn't been reprinted in almost 20 years...hence why it also says "remove it from play" instead of "banish it." So if you temporarily banish a monster in the Extra Monster Zone via Dimensionhole, the second part of the effect simply won't be applied. The zone remains usable as normal.

@@Masterdramon3 That's not completely true, that was mostly for effects that let you arbitrarily chose zones; cards like Ghosttrick Socuteboss that applied to a zone already in use still worked just fine and could prevent the extra monster zone from being used. Also, Ground Collapse hasn't been reprinted recently either, its text was just updated in the database, but Dimensionhole's wasn't.

How many cards can search a generic spell card + how many are the instances where you would use this instead of an in-archetype card? exactly. In anime, graverobber not only didn't do damage, but you could also take ANY card from opponent's gy, not just spells.

Why would dimension hole being quickplay make it better? I guess you can freeze your a monster for a turn to stop something from attacking over your guy so you can tribute over it, but othrwise I dont see why itd be much better. Especially since for that purpose you have better tools like mirror force or sakuretsu armor

If your opponent used Mirror Force or Sakuretsu Armor on you, you could potentially chain a quickplay to it so you get it back instead of going to the GY

Chain dimension hole on your own monsters to dodge removal, it wouldve been a my body as a shield without the life point cost at that point and could also act as a quick temporary any target removal in a time that smashing ground was semied. It'd be good for the same reason book of moon was, but probably still significantly weaker.

6:59 Gal, you're talking nonsense. Graveyard play means that your cards can do stuff while in the graveyard. The Magician of Faith takes cards out of your graveyard back into your hand to use them again. If your cards do stuff while in the graveyard, you wouldn't want this, you'd want them to be there, so you can use them there; but if they are useless while in the graveyard (such as Monster Reborn) you'd want to get them out of there, preferably back to the hand.

well the question how good is life gain in mtg is a bit awkward compared to yugioh because stats make sense, you don't just summon a "weak" monster and it has a quarter of the starting life. so life gain is bad but cards that gain life are really good because you can beat agro deck an archetype that doesn't even exist in yugioh anymore

Its not that, lp gain in yugioh is jusy pathetically low most cards that give you LP give you like the equivalent of 2 life in magic (800 lp), life points only generally come up in time in yugioh. Aggro is a deck type in yugioh, but moreso is about OTK, it was more relevant against branded when it was meta since branded was a completely midrange deck

ngl, I don't know why Graverobber was bad. You did, in fact, know what the opponent was playing. They were playing the same broken spell cards that you and everyone else were running. Sure, you could draw graverobber without the opponent getting a good spell card in the grave, but you could also draw magician of faith without having a good spell card in the grave. The spell cards in the grave that you'd want to bring back with either card were the SAME CARDS, because old school ygo had even more staple cards than modern ygo and the staples were almost all broken spell cards that you want in every deck

When was enraged battle ox ever "meta?" I only ever see it once every 100-150 games in earth gaia beatdown but even that deck loses to most meta decks. Furthermore, it was printed when we had 1900 beaters as the baseline attack stat.
