Please do a biflow heat pump dryer and a suction line dryer

The HVAC guy installed one way filter drier on my 5 ton heatpump. It never worked right for over a year and really struggled. Anyway a biflow filter drier was installed. I also changed out defrost control with a universal Honeywell. Since then my central heatpump works great. I was scared the unit was damaged with wrong filter drier. It doesn’t seem to be.

Interesting test, Nicely done Zack 👏. I have seen some installed backwards in the field and working, curious to cut open a bi flow and see the difference.

Great video. If you install a filter drier so the liquid flow is correctly when the gas comes in other way in reverse mode it should not be a problem at all.

One was installed backwards on a walk in cooler, it stopped working in a couple of days, I went back and the filter was oil logged, I put a new drier in and new refrigerant, that was 3 years ago, definitely made a difference in this case.

Do you remember the brand of drier? Maybe it was constructed differently

I imagine that at first it would be okay, especially on a new system, but over time it could become a problem, progressively degrading performance/efficiency.

Think the main issue is theres no filter pad at the inlet so if the flow is backwards bits of the core could make it into the system.

Yea, my thoughts too. thats the reason i dont use Sporlan driers. i dont like the solid blocks they use they break apart. especially if drier gets dropped in shipping. i only use Emerson / Alco. they use Lots of tiny dessicant beads that dont break or dust up. Much Quicker Moisture removal and larger surface area overall. also if drier is dropped beads dont break. sporlan cores do.

@@OcRefrig Our local wholesalers have stopped stocking Sporlan stuff and switched more to Danfoss, they have the same style solid cores but so far have had good luck with them.

No it will not work. I just found a system with the drier wrong way. It might work the first days but after a while it will stop working. And also someone said the desicant inside will get out in the system.

I don’t know if the results would be different but vapor is never flowing through the drier when the u it is operating properly. It is a liquid line drier, even a heat pump in heating there will be 100% liquid refrigerant flowing through the drier. Like I said I don’t know you flowing vapor nitrogen verse a liquid is giving you false test results, but it might be worth trying again with like water or some thing like that.

Why not use a flow metter at both ends of the drier? Then reverse an check what the drop is? Also is it diffrent at difrent pressures?

Dude, The problem is that screen, that stone will come apart , if it’s in right, you’ll never know, if it’s backwards, you got issues

That’s what I’m gonna say because it gradually getting slower and slower even if you had a massive bottle it would keep dropping slower and slower. I don’t think it causes trouble the only thing you can do is try it on a real system while it’s working. That would take the cake.

Liquid freon will react differently than gas nitrogen.. pointless test.

Have you seen this happen firsthand? I had a keeprite furnace and 1.5T A/C Unit installed in 2021. I went 2 seasons with it working beautiful, it was the best A/C I ever experienced. 2 years later upon first start up in 2023 I had no cooling, we spent the whole summer diagnosing it. We found that the filter drier is backwards and now my compressor is working at about 60% capacity and my energy bill is double what it was the previous year. I suspect most of the problems stemed from the backwards filter drier.
