Can a PPL student, who have just done her first Solo flight in a Cessna 172, be coached to fly a full traffic circuit in a Boeing 737NG simulator?

Yeah i was kinda amazed and shocked at the first time i saw it, i was like, is he talking to the first officer so silently, or he is just repeating a checklist? But then he did it again and listened more carefully to realise he is just such a 'double checker' and so used to it that this is an honest automatic reaction from him like flying a real machine . Its brilliant =D

Back in the late 90s I got to fly the KC135 simulator at March ARB. Took off and landed with great success, I was amazed on how real it felt. Up to that point I had only flown home simulators of fighter jets. My two biggest surprises was the feel and slow response of the big bird, also on my first landing I had forgotten how much higher the cockpit was off the ground. Needless to say my first landing caught me by surprise. I was use to seeing a much lower profile at home.

I'm a hobby SIM-Pilot and got a "real" 777 simulator flight for my birthday. I remember how thrilling and overwhelming that was for me although I was completely familiar with the 777 avionics and cockpit (at least to the extent of my simulation software). But it was still such a huge difference between having a real cockpit with buttons instead of short keys on a computer keyboard. So when I consider that she's not that familiar with the 737 I'm impressed how she handled it. I found it incredible complicated to keep overall awareness for speed, altitude, pitch, bank and position itself in manual flight. It was exhausting! On my 2nd attempt on the simulator I wanted to try having the autopilot fly the plane (except for the final approach and touchdown) and I programmed the short route and approach into the autopilot and controlled it without the help of the instructor. This worked really well. Since it was a realistic simulator I'd have mastered that in a real plane I guess. But flying manually completely would have been a disaster and I'd use up all my fuel without being able to align properly to the runway where everything comes together.

I am a senior citizen just getting back into flying; , got my Commercial, CFI, instrument etc more than 30 years ago , using my Veterans benefits, but could not afford to continue flying after that. Having fun now with an instructor learning GPS approaches etc. That did not exist in the late 1970s. There's a saying that pilots make - the view out the front is the same. I don't have jet time but have flown 152;'s, 172''s, 182's, Cherokees, Saratogas, Vikings, SR-22, and a few others. I can tell you the faster the aircraft, the more you have to keep in front of it. I remember struggling with same issues of keeping an eye on speed, rate of climb/descent, rate of turn and keeping the plane coordinated. The speeds on approach are almost triple in a commercial airliner compared to a Cessna so good for her to be able to fly a relatively stable approach and landing.

I love this channel. Ive had a horrible fear of flying since I took a delayed flight back from Turkey around 15 years ago. I remember a feeling of the plane tilting to one side and a loud noise coming from one side of the plane. It frightened me to death and my blood ran cold. Ever since ive been petrified to fly to the point that I took a 1 hour flight to germany a few year after and burst into tears. Ive watched many of your videos and youve helped me feel so at ease now I understand what is happening and I was able to fly a short flight to northern Ireland last month without having a meltdown! Wow what an experience I'd reckon for a ppl student! She looks to progress really well. Makes me remember last year tagging along with a friend for his and co colleague annual check rides. The briefing and their sim tests were tremendously interesting to have witnessed. Afterword he put me in the right seat of the E190 sim. Had not flown in a long time (not continue after high school...), so that was quite an experience, a fond memory and the 1st t/go captured on film :)

Mentour a friend and myself who are both SIM enthusiasts and not even GA pilots had an opportunity to fly in a 738NG simulator. WE flew circuits at FAOR, from a stand which started with a push back engine start and taxi to active runway. We followed a checklist we had, during the circuits we encountered an engine failure, we also had smoke in the cockpit at some time. We were able to do all the correct procedures as per the QRH and landed the aircraft safely and correctly. Also flew from FHSH and landed there, but it was more difficult due to the wind factor and shorter runway, but all was achieved. So hence I'm sure that people with enough hours on the 738 in the SIM world, should be able to fly if needed.

I have experienced a (static) 738 sim on a few occasions and I can empathise with the same mistakes that she made, not having the 'feel' of the plane and chasing the FD and so watching her conquer the beast on video would be a fantastic programme. Great video. The student is great, and the teaching is great. What got my attention was how pro Peter is in the cockpit. At 13:59, he (instinctually) does this automatic check, verbally clicking the items off to himself, waving his hand over the panel. Its amazing to watch. At another point he does something similar I think to the autopilot.

In my childhood I was taken into a flight simulator and afterwards shown the scale model of the airport mounted vertically that a camera was tracking to show the visuals through the simulator's front window. No digital and black side windows. As soon as the "flight" left the airport there was only black in the front windows as well.

Also, really appreciate Beatrice's comments on training, and yours. Some people have a knack for picking up what you put down, others are what I call "ouija board" operators. They observe what you do, then try to remember the moves, without understanding the purpose. They can go back to slinging hash.

Thanks for this video. A long time ago I was in a six axis simulator for the KC-10(DC-10 AF tanker) courtesy of my Air Force pilot nephew. My prior experience was not an actual Cessna, but the Flight Simulator version of the 172. I had also taken lessons in an ultralight, but not actually soloed with it, just a short hop and drop in line with the runway. In the simulator, which I assume had no crosswinds or other complications to deal with, I was able to surprise my nephew by actually flying a pattern successfully like your student did. It was made possible, mostly by the instructor doing for me what you did for her. In my case, not having the rudder and brake experience she had in an actual Cessna, I did not manage to keep the plane on the runway after hitting the centerline accurately, but the many many pattern take-offs and landings I had practiced in the fake Cessna gave me the ability, greatly enhanced by the real seat of the pants feel of flight dynamics that motion simulator gave to my body, to bring that plane more or less safely onto that simulated runway at March AFB including clearance of the nearby mountains needed to do the pattern there. Now I know how much more help I really had in that one time, unforgettable exercise.

From an engineering perspective, I marvel at the integration of avionics and mechanical inputs available on the 737. Great piece of machinery(737). But, IMO and only my IMO, it seems like we've been jamming two different worlds together: Cables, wheels and electronics. I like the former, BTW. I know these comments aren't answered on here but it is much easier for me to post here than the app. Just is(deficient-sighted(eye) engineer).

To be in the simulator with Petter like this would be an absolute dream come true. All I have are KZbin videos like yours and computer games. If something were to happen where there was a dual pilot incapacitation and they needed a passenger I'd be the first volunteer. With 121.500 I feel confident, especially with all the automation which I have a basic understanding from you. Medically, I can't be a pilot or else that would 100% be my career by any means whatsoever. All I can do is live through these means.

I got a chance to "fly" the 2nd Conductron Missouri 737 Digital Flight Simulator off the line around the time I turned 10 in early 1967. Boeing test pilot Kit Carson was checking it out prior to delivery. The first thing I did was put it in a Dutch Roll. My dad was the manager of the program so he was able to bring my sister and me into the plant on a Sunday. The simulator was the first all digital flight simulator. Previous flight simulators with motion bases used hybrid computers with the flight dynamic calculations programmed into analog computers. I don't think I could have been coached to fly a full traffic circuit that day.

Sure, I went to ATOPPilots and flew the 737-800 at American Airlines and then two times to Jet Blue University and flew the A-320 sim on Yena 4 (name of that particular sim). I got the ‘Good Stick’ on my A-320 print from Wayne Phillips, the mentor and organizer of the full motion sims at these airline’s training facilities. It was one of the most fantastic experiences since becoming a pilot. It helps to have a little instrument experience (not entirely necessary), but it sure helps. You are hand flying the whole time, and the only thing automatic is using the auto throttles. Starting the engines, taxi onto the runway, line up and wait, take off, fly the pattern, an ILS final approach, and landing/touch n go, then an ILS in IMC to a visual minimums (your choice altitude), and then touchdown, reverse thrust and brake to a stop. You do a full day of training in the classroom and mock-up sims on systems and flight processes, them the next day the sim sessions and you have a session as pilot and as a co-pilot; as a pilot using the dialog from the controller and directions from the co-pilot. 🛫😎🛬

I have done a 737-800 flight sim before, I landed it, however I noticed how fatigue effects your performance, because I was flying without auto pilot, and had to follow the line, and it honestly tired me out. However it was a great experience, and it allows me to say how she has done a really good job

Prosperous 2020 to all-Brilliant attempt. But realise u missed the step to set/adjust the seat correctly for her. U could see, especially on 2nd attempt how she was struggling to see outside , and I could see after landing how after u requested braking she had to move her entire body to fully push the radar pedals. Otherwise brilliant(A matter of practice/type rating for B737 Missing)

I think that's a video what is highly recommended for flight instructors as well. That is the way how real progress could be made: let the student make mistakes, and help her (or him) to know it and correct it, but still do it in a supportive and positive manner. Teaching is not about showing off the piloting skills of the instructor but a confidence and knowledge builder for the student. Luckily most of my FIs during my GA career were something like this, but there were a few who were the types who begin shouting for a little slideslip or 10km/h of speed deviation and continuously doing their own inputs on the controls instead of the student. I was really determined to learn to fly so I'd fly together with the devil itself, however I felt improvement (and had fun) with instructors who were maybe cocky or even harsh on the ground but they become ice cool in the air and up there the only objective was to prepare me for the safe and precise execution of the given task. I liked how MentourPilot kept his hands really close to the yoke, as it'd have been the real "iron" and entering into dangerous regime wouldn't be an option :)

That is so cool, I'd love the opportunity to get some sim training from Mentor. If you ever want to do a "can an aviation geek land a commercial passenger plane" I'm so keen!!
