Thanks, Chris. Enjoyed the review (and many others). My yard is about an acre and a half here in a neighborhood in Georgia. I’ve had a Robomow RS630 for about eight years. It is greatness about 85% of the time until the perimeter wire gets cut somewhere, somehow. Just finished a couple of days crawling around finding and repairing the issues, but now up and running again. Seems like about once a season. *I literally had a Mammotion Luba 5000 in my cart ready to go if the fixes didn’t work! The Robomow does a beautiful job, but I’ve never cared for the random mowing pattern and the cursed perimeter wires. Also like the “more traditional” metal blades vs the razor blades. Eats ups sticks and pine cones. That’ll be tough to give up. Hoping to get another season or two out of Shlomow…he’s been a good friend.

I've never had wires cut. Nothing ever moves like that at the edges of my lawn that could cut it; the dealer also had a service to come install it with a machine so maybe it's pushed a bit deeper, dunno. Also blessed in that there are no trees on the lawn that drop stuff like pine cones. But yeah, one part of mowers is that they don't really come with a brain, so just like interior robo vacuum cleaners, you gotta keep the lawn clean of debris, can't just leave a hose laying around for instance. I do agree on the ugly random walk the mower does from edge to edge, it may be effective and easy to program in but visually having traces going hither and yon isn't the greatest. I did have a Bosch Indego automatic mower before that was way smarter at that, it cut in pretty parallel lines. Unfortunately that was an earlier generation of those and it didn't really have the rock solid reliability you want - yet. I wonder how well the new ones do. Bosch isn't a half bad brand. But for me, the relatively new Automower from their X line has been basically flawless. Put it out in the spring, have a great lawn the entire summer, pluck it back out in the fall.

Ditto, dude. I ran into the same initial awe and final frustrations. And it took noting the risks of property damage and even personal injury (mine drove into street too) to get return approval. I'm still impressed with the concept, but it'll need significant further development before I'll jump back into this realm. Thanks, Chris, for the informative video.

I bought the blade and yesterday they released a firmware update that finally lets you choose the direction to cut the lawn as well as turn off the zero-turn feature. Ever since the firmware update, it's "scared" to cut the lawn. When I'd do quick setting, it'd go out and do its thing. Now it stutters and is constantly detecting obstacles. One of the new features is supposed to be automatic restricted zones by noting where it gets stuck and adding them. It kept getting stuck in the same spot but never restricted it. And, my absolute biggest frustration is that it's supposed to return to the same spot when it needs a recharge but it ends up doing the entire section it already cut once charged. Ultimately, I think I'm returning it and getting a Luba. Similar price and features, and seems to be better liked.

Great review. I am waiting for one that can do 2.5 with almost a thousand large trees, so GPS will have to work. I don't care what it mows like since my yard is more of a field, but I need the grass short to identify gophers. There is an Italian version that can move 5 acres but it's $17k plus and that is way way out of price range. Hopefully eco can fix issues and increase the yard size.

My husqvarna epos robotmower has none of these issues: it has a great App, does not get lost, mows in many different patterns (eg triangles, see my video) and can handle many different mowing zones, using gps. Etc. One disadvantage is that epos is very expensive (but it pays off via the time gained that I do not have use my X590 lawn tractor!).

Unlike robot vacuums, I think it's worth noting that having a robo mower go in straight lines and efficient, set paths can actually be bad for your lawn - most mowers are meant to be operating somewhat continuously and randomly. Having them repeatedly follow a set path will quickly create a visible path from the treads. Doing this every week or so with a manual mower is fine, but doing it daily won't have good results
@Thecaptainblackadder
@Thecaptainblackadder 8 ай бұрын
Not true at all. Systematic mowing pattern is the way to go. You should be able to change the pattern (like Luba and others allow). Problem with random mowing is that 1. It takes longer 2. You don’t know if it has finished all the areas. 3. The ways in which it gets stuck are unlimited.

When I purchase a basic mower for $200, I'm expecting it to last 10 to 15 years with basic, inexpensive maintenance. I'd be worried spending $3K for robot mower with no track record for quality and durability and with replacement parts will that likely cost more than a basic mower.
@MrCharmz81
@MrCharmz81 Жыл бұрын
Quality is questionable and I highly doubt it would last a year without replacement, you're better off sticking with a basic mower that will last a lot longer than these unit's, don't get me wrong it's nice, but I wouldn't depend on it, especially going through the hassle with warranty claims etc.
@KimmoJaskari

This is why people are willing to pay for a Husqvarna. They've been doing robot mowing longer than most and they've beaten the obvious issues. You can even get it as a service around here - they come and lay down the wire, they install the machine, and if you pay them they pick it up in the fall, clean and service it, and put it on maintenance charge over winter and then deliver it back in the spring with new blades and ready to go. I'm even willing to overlook the relatively ugly pattern it creates when it wanders randomly around the cut area, because I don't have to lift a finger at almost any point. Which is good since I hate gardening.

Where I live, almost the entire area has robot mowers, it's been several years since I've seen someone with an old-fashioned mower, probably between 100-200 new houses. Yes, a robot can get stuck. Mine have got stuck once this year and it was due to an area without grass, so now new grass has been sown there. Mine just move half way up on the tiles so that the edge is cut, you dont get a sharp edge because, so every 14 days I go one round with the edge trimmer, but I also did that with the normal mower. and it's not even the case that everyone has the most expensive models, but this design we see in the video is just begging for problems with that design on the front wheels
@dauntae24
@dauntae24 Жыл бұрын
@@MKAnr1 it would take a robot days to cut my lawn. I also want the clippings to be collected so they don’t thatch my lawn. No way those little toys can even come close to properly mulching grass. Even when done well it leads to thatch.
@MKAnr1
@MKAnr1 Жыл бұрын
@@dauntae24 I don't really understand the problem, whether it takes one or more days, my mower cuts every day when I'm at work, you don't have to do it yourself, so time doesn't matter and once it cuts, the grass is always cut all the way down to the height you want. There is no uncut grass on the lawn, as it mows often and that is the whole point, it mows a few mm each time so you can't see anything and the tiny bits act like fertiliser. My lawn is nicer than when I did it myself, but I'm also not a fanatic who spends a lot of time doing garden work, but after the robot arrived I don't have moss etc. in it, and I can throw fertilizer as often as I want without it gives me a lot of extra work to cut constantly. Mine is 4 years old now and cost about 800$ in the EU

@@MKAnr1 For that matter, my Automower is so silent that even if I sleep with the window open, the mower could theoretically just run 24/7. Would probably use up the battery pack faster to charge/discharge that constantly but it wouldn't bother me or the neighbors in the slightest, that's how quiet this thing is. Mostly you hear a faint ticking noise as it cuts the grass and a very quiet electrical hum, and as you say the grass doesn't have time to grow and the tiny grass bits will decompose.

Lawn cutting appears to be simple but it's not. I've done it for many years and I know almost for sure that none of the robots would justify itself when it comes to overall considerations. It's understandable that it's a project that would get engineers across the world excited and dive into, as it would appear interesting initially. Yet most of these engineers have not physically done the lawn cutting and lack the in-depth understanding of the details it takes to cut the simple lawn. These details are simple to humans but forbiddingly difficult for robots. I still hire people to cut it, it's zero hassle, and most importantly, they do a nice and complete job that these robots can never dream of accomplishing in a hundred years.

It keeps hitting my tiki touch lights, so I'm gonna put different ones in... and I've got some thick grass in some locations that it doesn't like to cut. The weeds. Maybe crab grass. If I didn't have my Husqvarna robot, I'd probably torch the house for the insurance money and buy a cabin built on a rock. Because to hell with mowing the lawn. The Automower is just incredibly reliable. Obviously the place that sold it to me also came out and laid down the wire, using a machine designed for that purpose. Took them all of an hour or something. That service should be available everywhere - just pay them the pittance they want if need be and get a professionally laid down wire, you don't have to lift a finger. Even if you do have to go out and do some polish on the edges and such, you're not out there every couple days trudging across your entire effing lawn, which is a massive W. I even had them lay the wire in a narrow channel in one of the outlying areas so the robot could go around and through that little "keyhole" of an area and mow in front of the hedge... and it does that just fine!

@@ChrisMajestic the challenges with it this far have been software related. Usually, when everything is up and running it works exactly as you’d expect. The positioning logic is far more accurate and far less sensitive in comparison to the EcoFlow. A large gap between the EcoFlow and Luba is the wheel design. The AWD Luba basically destroys the fairly flawed Omni wheel design on the EcoFlow. The Omni wheel design, for me, was consistently catching on grass and picking up any form of debris between the gaps. This basically became friction for the EcoFlows large rear wheels, which would try to power through things digging itself into the ground. The Luba simply doesn’t have this issue and handles incline, dirt and even sand without breaking a sweat. For the price and hardware, it’s the best trade off in comparison to buying the 2x priced EPOS Husqvarna and I’ve been happy thus far. It would be awesome if you performed a side by side comparison.

The deck doesn’t need to be so large on an autonomous mower. It mows more frequently so it can easily handle a large space as it can recharge in the middle of cutting and still finish the job. That being said, a larger deck would allow it to cut fast and possibly cover an even larger space but it’s not 100% necessary in every case.
