In this video, I decided that I wanted to have a port downstairs closer to the television where the downstairs switch is. I've since moved the entertainment center on the other side of the living room to better accommodate the cable so it's not in the walkway. I wasn't able to properly locate the cable using a toner tracer so I had to literally open up each wall plate and see what color it was labeled as. Luckily I was able to find it in quick time for those who know cabling spending a few minutes checking just 2-3 or even 4 wall plates is nothing compared to having to find a cable with no toner tracer and no identifiable information. Anyways, enjoy the video! Give it a like and comment down below if you've had something similar like this before.
TLDR: Converting Cat5 RJ11 wiring to Cat6 RJ45 wiring internal wall keystone jack into a wallplate.

I was wondering if this will work. I have a modem in the living room with a rj45 port right next to it and a rj11 port in my bedroom. If i connect a ethernet cable from the modem to the rj45 port in the living room and then a rj11 to rj45 adapter to my rj11 port. Will wifi flow through to my pc or not?

What port did you plug the 5 cat into your router? And are all the other steps after the first outlet you did necessary? I just wanna get one outlet working really fast cause that’s all I use.
@WesleyFranks
@WesleyFranks 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting the port doesn’t matter there are only four so pick one. I don’t know why you’re asking if they are necessary this is less of a full tutorial and more of a vlog style documentary on the project I did felt it was good content. If you want to get one going fast there are a lot of variables to consider. Can you access your attic? Can you even run a cat 5/6 cable? Do you have a magnetic cord puller so you can get through the insulation if there is any? Can you afford to punch a hole in the wall and properly cover it with a wall plate for that “one” cable. Normally it’s not standard to run one cable so it would make no sense to build a network closet for one cable. I’d look up other videos that teach you how to run cables in a home and build a network closet.

I just moved to a new house and have an rj-11 jack in my room. Our main wireless router is so far from my bedroom and it frustrates me having poor wifi signal. If I were to mess up with the rj-11 jack, what should I know first? Like I don't even know where this jack is connected from. Is there some kind of chart or blueprint should I be looking at first. Sorry for long post
@WesleyFranks
@WesleyFranks 3 жыл бұрын
First is to open the jack and see what type of cable is used in the wall. Then if its RJ11 than you can’t wire any internet up, but if its RJ45/CAT5 than you can follow a video i have to wire up an RJ45 wall jack. Check my videos i have another more recent. Go to my channel > videos tab > scroll until you see the RJ45 cable video that should help

@@WesleyFranks my house dosent have any labels for the wire is there any other way to distinguish them from each other expect from toner and trail and error
@WesleyFranks
@WesleyFranks 3 жыл бұрын
@@pejaywejay Unfortunately there isn’t my suggestion is to get a toner. If not that, then if you had enough slack about a foot or so. I’d just put a RJ45 head one the end you know (say your office) then go to where they are and just put a head on all the ones you can. Plug in a laptop on the office end with a continuous ping to google. Then, just trial and error until you find which one it is. I mean it’s just about trying what you can with what you can afford. I know it’s tough, but the answers are sometimes just trying what you can and not getting too annoyed or frustrated. It’s all difficult depending on the house. I lucked out with cat5 already in the wall.

My cable doesn't have the brown-brown/white wire in it. Does it matter?
@WesleyFranks
@WesleyFranks 3 жыл бұрын
I would say yes, but as long as you have the same number of wires the only thing that matters is that you have the same on each end. The tough thing is keystone jacks go based on the colors i mentioned so you’ll have to figure that out

Can anybody please tell what is that metal port sticking out on the left side from the face plate on the wall of Wesley Frank's telephone cable's hole? I have a same thing on my wall, and I have no clue what is that for!

The title is misleading. Should’ve been “how to swap rj11 to rj45”. Also, you mentioned Poe and just wanted to know why you don’t just have regular switch’s since I didn’t really notice any device that needed Poe?
@WesleyFranks
@WesleyFranks 3 жыл бұрын
This is an awesome response. I’ll explain the title was a “youtube title” meaning it grabbed people’s attention. In reality your idea is a great one but not something that would accurately explain what I’m doing it for. Also, this was more of a vlog than a “how to”. I don’t own the home i rent otherwise your correct i would have just done proper networking and ran cat6 instead of cat5 which is in the walls.
@WesleyFranks
@WesleyFranks 3 жыл бұрын
The device that needed poe wasn’t readily available i was setting it up for future use. I need a poe switch downstairs now for a WAP. Then because of the rona i need poe in my office now but that’s another story. Thanks for your comment hopefully you understand where I’m coming from now.

Wesley, I'm a network noobie. I don't plan on doing this BUT I just want to ask what cat cable is in the wall? You used a cat 6 in the house but what is in the wall? Sorry if you mentioned it.
