@@TheDoozie43 not really. in a tournament setting a caddie takes care of most of these but they definitely matter. at the tour pro level, every single advantage you can get means something. Hitting it 2 feet closer from even 150 yards over the course of a season means slowly gaining strokes compared to other players on average. These small advantages accumlate in rounds to be a shot or two on average, which sometimes is the entire difference between decent pro and a solid one.

Watching vids like this just confirms what I’ve been saying for decades… That public courses are actually more difficult than perfectly manicured & kept pro courses. Every time I’ve e played with pros on public courses, they have difficult times like this. But on their home courses or tour courses, they smash it with relative ease. I’m no pro, but I was taught by my dad (a pro) and have played with the big names, I have been playing for 40+ years, and when I play tour courses I shoot the best scores of my life and play consistently. And yet there’s a 6600yd public mountain course (and a few other publics) which just torture us.

Yeah I’m not to sure about that, years ago I played a tournament at our local muni. The college kid that won it shot 61 on the first day and several shots under par the next two days but yet he couldn’t even make it on the mini tours.

The difference between a pro and an average golfer can be summed up at the teebox on #2. If you don't use an app that makes all those calculations for you, you're just shooting the flag and hitting and blaming a swing flaw or something else. There are a ton of shots in a round that are up for grabs if you can learn to make good assessments of the situation (and commit like he said he failed to do even though the numbers were spot on).

This is a well above average difficulty course with some wind. A 135 slope (average is supposed to be 113) indicates a fair amount of trouble that would intimidate and cause trouble for most golfers. Add in some significant wind and this was no pushover test. I would call this is a B- performance for a tour pro considering no course knowledge to start with. He took it all very well in stride. Cheers.

At some point after discovering he did not bring sharp ball striking to the round, I thought he would begin to play the course instead of playing to numbers. Obviously not a binary choice, simply a change in focus. In this round he was both caddy and player. Too much intellectual activity to respond athletically to conditions like the stud he clearly is given his success in Tour events. He was gracious to share his caddy’s process but limited his score from the start. He has earned a new fan!

Harrison Meadows is “public” in the sense that anyone who has the money can join the club. You can’t just book a tee time there whenever you feel like it. It’s about $5000 a year for residents of Harrison and 10k for non residents… I really wish you went to any of the true Westchester muni courses though like Maple Moore or Saxon Woods… You could’ve even settled for Hudson Hills which is the most “difficult” muni course we offer in the county.
