I have heard of one problem with using dead wood outdoors. A standing dead tree can have active decay fungus started, which can lead to rapid decay in a moist situation. Using it indoors or kiln drying it with a high enough temperature to kill fungus can prevent damage.

Great use of the downed wood and the sawmill to make something very useful as well as attractive! I look forward to the day that I have a sawmill at the farm...we have SO MANY trees down that have just happened in the 3 years that we've owned the property. I understand not treating the boards for rot, and I would do the same. However, replacing the board against the deck or the house would not be easy. How about charring the inside? Or even putting a thick liner (like billboard thickness) on the inside and that would probably double or triple the life of the wood. Just a thought. Take care and have a blessed week!

The inside boards can be replaced by reaching around the ends. It is lower than the deck and out a couple inches. As for the inside of the box, charring is an option but I don’t want to use any plastic or other synthetic material in the soil.

That grape arbor over the porch sounds like a wonderful relaxing place to be...... but, I think Troy in the future will be doing a video about lots bird poop on his porch and bees making his porch uninhabitable. Mine was kiwi but you'll get the same result.

The three cats we have will probably give the birds a run for their money. The yellow jackets already wear us out!

I was interested in how you account for the large gap at front of box. Guess I'll wait for the filling video.
@RedToolHouseАй бұрын
When we fill with compost we will just let the gap be filled by that. That is a low spot in the yard so any fill in the outside will be good

It’s great that you used wood that would otherwise become soil.

Love the raised bed idea, but I would strongly encourage you to rethink your plant of choice. Grapes will leave a mess on your porch from dropped fruit, attract bees and depending on which grape varieties you choose could also take over with a few years of no care. (Think when you get older and cannot keep maintenance up like you’d prefer and need to.) IG and Pinterest make them look like beautiful options, but they are not. You’d be better off with thornless climbing roses. Sans the potential bees still.

Why not cut up a food grade tote insert and use the strips to line the inside of the bed? -KJ

Is the tin there because that's where Helene left it, or it was there for a purpose?

Tree her was the site of the old root cellar. Still some remnants of that.

Is this not going to rot in a couple of years??
@RedToolHouseАй бұрын
Yes. Easy to replace. Keeps from having chemically soaked boards in our beds.
