The product served its purpose well and provided excellent fires throughout the evening. We were able to open the door and do s'mores, but I had to be careful because the handle was a bit hot on occasions. Additionally, I wish they had replaced some of the standard nuts with lock nuts in some places. We lost the door handle after just a couple of days of usage. Not a deal breaker, just a recommendation. I still give it 5 stars.

What a wonderful job you did explaining this, thank you. We bought a 2-story house with an insert, (Blaze King), in a basement with long, tall chimney, (going up 3 stories), first time tried to light it, your right "disaster", so much cold/negative air pressure, SMOKE-ville city, scary! No other guys selling stoves could explain this to us let alone have/had a clue to help. Lucky for us we had some old timers that explained we had to heat the chimney first with a blow torch and open a basement window. (Say what)? Buying a house and heating explanations with chimneys are essential. This house has, 3 gas stoves, (2 on main floor), and 2 in basement; one gas, one wood, chimneys at both ends of home, North and South. Only one gas stove in basement is efficient and heats! Great video! I also want to say we have a basement wood stove in a 2 story that works great but there are reasons for that. It has an open stair well from the basement to the second floor as well as a ducted furnace and fresh air exchange that move the air well in hour house. Our chimney goes through the wall, and up the outside of the house above the peak (over 30 feet of rise) and yes it cost more than the stove. We burn about 3 cords a year and it's been an absolute game changer making our basement (which is well insulated) warm and cozy all through the winter. Bottom line is to find a good dealer in your area who knows the weather and conditions you deal with locally and don't cheap out on your chimney.

Ug. I watched your video on wood burning stove vs pellet stove. You convinced me to buy a wood burning stove. Now I watched this and I'm convinced that it won't work. We live in a 2 story, 100 year old uninsulated house, and it is like heating a barn. Just bought the house. LEARNED ALOT! THANKS. This really helped me confirm and learn the "wood burning knowledge about pipe, temps, drafts, etc." Ive been burning wood, playing with wood stoves a long time. But the science behind the pipe temps, draft, negative air flow zones is rite on! great job. It really helped me with some things ive over looked in past.. Maybe you could do a video of pipe draft control, Ive always wondered, debated with others, if it was worth it too have a draft control right above the woodstove, to close down draft flow too keep more heat in? etc?.. Personally i never beleived in a "draft control butterfly near the stove.. I always figured it was best too control the temps/draft with the wood stove itself. vs. one in the pipe above. I think people overlook the hole pipe temp and draft,negative air zones, and go rite too blaming problems on the wood and or wood stove.

I think you did an incredible job explaining Wood Burning stoves/inserts. I was able to follow you pretty easily, unlike the guy you were asking questions. So, I have a home in Southern California with a masonry fireplace that gives little to no heat. However, my neighbors have fireplaes that give lots of heat. None of us have inserts. Why do they get heat and I don't?

Great video! Up north cold winters and lesser insulated basements is why a lot of us want the quick, direct, cozy heat of a wood stove downstairs. The explanation of the challenges makes sense, but so many people with stoves/fireplaces here have them in the basement for this reason. Are there alternatives like putting an outside air intake to the stove? With the envelope - doesn't the furnace air intake/stack or bathroom/kitchen vent fans already affect the pressure? Same with windows and other sources of air leak. I heard the average home has equivalent of a 3ft hole in it from cracks and air leaks. Is the pressure concern more so for super new and very well insulated homes? Thanks!

I built a tiny house and I insulated it very well sealing every crack and cranny myself. If it’s 28 feet by 16 feet 8 foot high ceilings and a loft up top on one side is my wood stove going to be a good heat source if it’s the only heat source. It doesn’t get as cold as the outside does due to my insulation job. At least so far that’s been my experience although it’s not totally finished yet. I am working on the the stove piping out the ceiling towards the lower part of the roof. Great explanation! Thank you!!

I feel with your example of the cold barn. Overtime both double and single wall pipe will reach the same temperature when the stove is not running. The barn will eventually reach the outside temp if enough time has gone by without heat.

I’d like to put a wood stove in the basement, and my question is, can I tie into my existing pipe in the chase or do I need to run a separate pipe, and if so can I put two pipes in one chase?

This video is so helpful!!! Only one question. You didnt really discuss fresh air intakes on the wood stove. Dont most efficient wood stoves have a port for a fresh air intake? If you had a fresh air intake installed would it make installing in a basement more feasible? We are planning on a walk-out basement install and planned to run a fresh air intake to the stove. The stove pipe will be run in a bumped out chimney chase on the exterior wall.

What's your thought on fresh air intakes? I kind of like the idea of making it a closed system so you are less affected by inside pressure and it's probably more efficient as it's not sucking cold air back into the house from cracks etc. An ideal house envelope should be tightly sealed as well (though most aren't). The only practical spot for me to put a stove is in the basement, so I'm thinking it would maybe help with that too.

Great video, I bought a Vermont casting Dauntless and the sales person in NJ are useless. I had it installed last February and this is the first full year using it. Your videos show you can open the top and load it and no smoke comes out. When I do it smokes comes out also trying to load it from the front it does the same thing. I just noticed there is an opening for a make up air that is really not hooked up. Do thin that is the problem. I also have ash soot leaking out of the front door hinges. Please help

Heat rises, 1) Put a register in the floor, (cellar ceiling) and 2) If the floor is warm, the room temp can be cooler, but the body stays warm,. In the basement was the best place for us. Also, we put a 4" fresh air return through the basement wall, and ran 4" vent pipe down to about 1 foot above floor level. we also put a register in the basement door, to keep the air flowing (convection) from cool up stairs air, to return to the basement for circulation. I have a heatform by superior made custom the lady put in this home i bought the heat this generates is off the charts. That heatilator and firbox is the thickeat steel ever produced. The blower motor is massive in the basement she did it right the fresh air intake going outside built in the ash box below is the bomb. I wish they still made units like this i know some people tore them out of homes because they had no clue what they had and wanted new not trusting it because it was old. People pay big for those. Thwy made them way back in the day the steal double wll construction is just phenomenal. I love it the home was built in 93 she paid good to have it made i love itm i do want to add a unit upstairs. Thank god i have a 2nd flue in the chimney to hit.

That was a great video. :) My question: can we start with a single wall 5', slot it into a double 5', and then do the triple for the last 5'? This is a single story but with vaulted ceilings, and we're putting this just off the peak, which is about 11'. I am thinking about putting a wood stove into the basement of my home. The chimney that is in the house now goes right up the centre of the home and out the peak of the home. I was looking at the restrictions locally and it says I can put the wood stove pipe into the existing oil furnace chimney (keep in mind I will not be using the oil furnace at all). There is more than enough ventilation in the basement allowing a lot of air to be able to get into the stove. My home is relatively small and don’t have a place for it on the main floor. Leaving the only possibility to be in the basement. Do you suggest this or am I wasting my time.

I have radiant heat in my basement floor. The basement opens out to the ground outside. Two sides are underground but I have French doors from which you can walk right out to the patio in backyard. I wanted to put a wood burning stove in the basement, which I am finishing with 2 bedrooms, bathroom and a kitchenette. It's a large log cabin built less than 10 years ago, in a pretty cold and snowy area of the country in mid to upstate NY. I wanted the wood burning stove as sort of a Prepper option if power goes out. I have electric stoves on main floor. I figured too that should power go out, the stove in the basement could at least keep pipes from bursting. It won't heat the whole house of course, but might provide a small area where we could gather to keep warm in an emergency, and also cook something hot . . . Any thoughts? The chimney is another issue - my cabin has pretty complicated roofing and I would have to run it out the wall and up as I can't really go through the radiant flooring throughout. Should I abandon the idea of a wood burning stove in the basement?

Hello, I live in a split level bungalow and the “basement” is the only place for the wood stove. There is an old wood stove we are replacing that is already there but did not work very well (had the smoking inside the house effect). It’s not exactly a basement but it’s also not the main floor. How can I make sure it works to the best of its ability since this is my only option? Thank you

The company that installed my chimney liner for my insert said that you don’t need to insulate the liner for two reasons, 1. Because I have terracotta lining in my chimney and 2. that if you insulate the chimney liner you won’t be able to get the liner out of the chimney as in it would get stuck in there. Is this right or did he tell me some bullshit?

I pulled a chimney liner for fuel oil -> NG conversion in a circa 1890 U.S. home, single brick, unlined chimney ~5 stories. No way it would pass “chimney inspection” so I bought the mentioned stainless liner + extension to hit 50-60 feet. That story boring, BUT each floor hit a blockage while pulling the liner (no cell phones needed bc you can speak with a whisper through the chimney to your helper). I climbed off 60 foot peak, grabbed a hammer 🔨and started smashing drywall in a specific spot around chimney. You guessed it: every single floor had single walled 3” stove pipe on each 4-5 floors…a wood or coal stove (had a silhouette photo of appliance near 3rd floor chimney). Not sure if a hearth or a small tub that logically would be near stove. So repeat the process with improved expediency for each floor & through peak…

Yes, as long as you have a stainless steel liner going for appliance to top of chimney. Also. A surround to enclose the stove so u don't see in the fireplace. You also want to seal up the area of the old fireplace damper. A few options for that.

I am having a problem following your logic about single wall pipe within the house structure. Even though a single wall pipe will feel cold to the touch when there's no fire, the inside of the pipe will actually be warmer for any given inside temperature, versus an insulated pipe. If the pipe is insulated, then the inside of the pipe will be even colder then a single wall pipe, as the warm air from inside the house cannot preheat that pipe effectively, to help it draw better when the fire is getting started. But if the pipe is single wall in the house or barn, as the case may be, then any heat within the structure will also help heat that pipe somewhat, thereby delivering some additional heat inside the pipe to enable the initial draw to start easier. The only advantage that I can see double wall insulated pipe having is to keep the cold air outside from radiating off the inside pipe into the room. Of course this would only be true if the wood stove had been off for a very long time and was stone cold. At least that's my thinking. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
