Air India is buying 470 jets from Airbus and Boeing, in a multibillion-dollar deal.
India’s largest international carrier is seeking to reinvent itself by expanding its operations and modernising its fleet.
French president Emanuel Macron called it a "new success”. US President Joe Biden said the Boeing order would support more than a million American jobs.
But will it be a game-changer for India's travel industry?

‘Charles declares Mumbai shanty town model for the world Dwellers go about their daily routine in the Dharavi slum in Mumbai. Photograph: Daniel Berehulak/Getty Images Robert Booth Friday, 6 February 2009 00.01 GMT The Mumbai shanty town featured in the film Slumdog Millionaire offers a better model than does western architecture for ways to house a booming urban population in the developing world, Prince Charles said yesterday. Dharavi, a Mumbai slum where 600,000 residents are crammed into 520 acres, contains the attributes for environmentally and socially sustainable settlements for the world’s increasingly urban population, he said. The district’s use of local materials, its walkable neighbourhoods, and mix of employment and housing add up to “an underlying intuitive grammar of design that is totally absent from the faceless slab blocks that are still being built around the world to ‘warehouse’ the poor”. The prince’s comments are likely to be seen as a criticism of western developers who export plans for large-scale, often high-rise buildings to developing countries. They will also come as a boost for residents of the Mumbai slums who protested against Slumdog Millionaire for characterising them as “dogs” and fought attempts to demolish their homes to make way for skyscrapers. The prince was addressing a conference at St James’s Palace organised by his Foundation for the Built Environment. The charity is attempting to involve local people in the redesign of slum areas in Freetown in Sierra Leone, Kingston in Jamaica and impoverished areas of New Orleans which were hit by Hurricane Katrina. The prince, who visited Dharavi in 2003, said the adaptation of traditional settlements would deliver “more durable gains than those delivered through the present brutal and insensitive process of globalisation that is shaping so many aspects of how we live”. He warned that a soaring urban population - rising from 50% of all the world’s inhabitants today to 70% by 2050 - could only be accommodated without disastrous social and environmental consequences by developing local urban design rather than “a single monoculture of globalisation”. “I strongly believe that the west has much to learn from societies and places which, while sometimes poorer in material terms are infinitely richer in the ways in which they live and organise themselves as communities,” he told planners, charity workers and government officials. “It may be the case that in a few years’ time such communities will be perceived as best equipped to face the challenges that confront us because they have a built-in resilience and genuinely durable ways of living.” He shared a platform with Jockin Arputham, founder of the National Slum Dwellers Federation of India, who attacked attempts by foreign investors to clear large parts of Dharavi and replace them with 23-storey apartments. “I am a slum dweller, not a slumdog,” he said, in reference to Danny Boyle’s film. “Many developing countries look to the west as a model but that cannot be the model. These [western] buildings use too much power and would not be affordable for us. In India the population has gone beyond all control and it is wrong to expect western development to help us.”’ [Ends]

@@argentaamore that's a nice move. Gulf carriers have no other way. Indian are very patriotic. So if an Indian airlines give world class flight experience they will ditch non Indian flights in the blink of an eye. Gulf airlines loosing India is inevitable. But it's a disadvantage too because in the next coming years India will be the largest aviation industry in the world. It is currently the fastest growing aviation industry in the world with 7% growth. All the others are less than 5.6%.

Direct flights are here to stay and more Indians are travelling to Europe and Americas. Still the future of gulf carriers are robust as their service etc. are superior to Air India. Money power of populous countries like China and India, ASEAN etc. are going to accelerate through GDP growth. More planes are absolutely required for these countries and new Airports too.

Air India was once the best airliner from 1950s to late 1980s. Many successful airliners today went to Air India to learn fron their ways. I think Emirates went to Air India too. Air India was the best because Tata was involved. Government took control over Air India in 1951 or something but with great management of the officials it had the most quality among airliners in the world. Now Tata, it's original owners have taken back. Just wait and watch. Palace on air is coming. It's quality and service will be equal to or better than the Gulf Airliners. Plus majority of Gulf airliners profit is from Indians. If they loose Indians their profits will decrease drastically unless they find new markets. Indians are pretty patriotic. So if Air India becomes great again then they will ditch Gulf airlines in a second.

The Gulf based carriers will be the first victims of the India based carriers. *And Al Jazeera knows it* too, which is exactly why there is so much attention devoted to it here, when even Western media didn't even though Western companies are going to be the biggest beneficiaries of thus deal. The Indian carriers have access to a giant domestic market that is out of bounds for the Gulf carriers, giving them economies of scale that the Gulf carriers cannot match. A lot of the Gulf carriers benefit massively today from Indians transiting through the Gulf towards America and Europe, because of lack of direct connections to those destinations because of: lack of scale of traffic today. And scale is the exact thing that will change. Ergo, that traffic will go directly in future to North America/Europe on Indian carriers.
