I'm a father from Netherlands. My 5 year old son can show you Germany, Belgium, Italy (Ferrari!), France, England, Norway, Spain, Australia (Bluey!), USA, Canada (where bears live!) and some other countries on a map. You know why? He is curious about everything. And in my opinion, parents have the duty to educate their kids about the world. There is nothing in the world that is more rewarding than helping your children with all the questions and curiosity they have about the world.

Agreed. There's a whole wonderful world out there and yet so many people prefer to live in ignorance. There are two types of ignorant people in my experience: 1) Those who are just poorly educated and who grew up in an environment where all their family and friends were also poorly educated. However many of these people given the opportunity are curious and want to learn. I have no problem with these and they should be encouraged. 2) Then there are the willful ignorant. They have zero interest in anything outside they're own little bubble. It's these people I can't understand and who make me sad.

There are 1000s of colleges in the US. Their first two years equate to less academic rigour than we do at 16 to 18 in high school elsewhere the world. Bear in mind that ' jocks' can get a full football scholarship at many without being able to construct a readable sentence.

Several European universities have done a geography test. We had 10 minutes to name the 193 countries on the world map, which isn’t a lot of time. The average result of Europe was 161, which means that students can name 161 countries on average. My university scored 176 which was the 3rd highest. 3 weeks ago we had general knowledge tests, which included also a lot of Geography. 70 questions. The average was 62/70. I bet most of the unifs in the US would fail those tests, especially the American students.

I think biggest difference of education between USA and Finland is how to learn. In US you commit to memory, in Finland we learn by understanding things, not just remember something what we don't understand. 🇫🇮

I was shocked sitting in on a university lecture there as a student from Ireland on a J1 visa working for the summer in the States. It was a friend doing the course and snuck me in. The lecturer had them open a chapter of a book, handed out a work sheet, more or less just went through the chapter.. and homework was to answer the questions on the chapter.. Apparently they'd get credits towards graduating the year for doing that module from that one book that way over 5-6 of such classes.. It was the way we were taught at home in primary school being used at university... I couldn't believe it .. The equivalent at home on my course.. would a series of lectures by the lecturer during which you took notes, asked questions... and got a suggested long book list to go study on the subject for an exam.. Okay..it wasn't Yale in the USA.. but the fact that that kind of rote handed learning even qualified as any university standard of teaching shocked me.. Kids in Ireland who left school at 16 , two years before the full length secondary school years final exams would be far better educated than kids coming out with degrees from that university..

My mum refused to buy Easter eggs for me and my brothers, instead she would buy us books. I felt cheated at the time, but the best book she bought me was a book on countries of the world which detailed its population, exports, religions, and notable historical facts. I was 8 years old and could name probably 90% of countries, describe its flags etc, and was a whizz on geography facts in pub quizzes in my teens. Fortunately my mum had the foresight to teach us, knowing the school system fails kids. She was a great believer in teaching to our strengths and not just random rubbish ( that no one uses in adult life) she taught us to forage, money and banking and cooking from scratch. We grew up money poor, but knowledge rich 👌🏻

I remember, some years ago when, using a similar process, adult Americans of a range of ages being asked if they thought that the US should bomb Sweden. The most common answer as I recall was a firm "yes!" Usually accompanied by some comment along the lines of the need to retain respect for America. A number of years ago I went back to university after about 20 years out. I was turning in pedestrian work and getting rave reviews which I didn't understand until I got a look at some of my fellow (younger) students' work. An epiphany: Oooh...they don't get to see written English very often. Some years after that I took up teaching. My seven years at a small (one room) rural school were wonderful. The students and parents were respectful and the students were used to doing their work. Then I made the mistake of going to a more urban school. About ten percent of the students considered it their jobs to actually try to learn. So I went back to trucking. You meet a much better class of people in trucking than in academia. I hear it is even worse now.

I live in Europe, when I was kindergarten age my parents bought me series of science for kids books - geography, biology, history and physics. With a lots of images and facts. All my friends had about the same stuff. It was not normal to know nothing about the world.

It's simply impossible to go through school and not learn anything at all, including where your country is. I think that is one of the factors at work here: books, and the lack of them. I once worked with a young American lady. Apparently, a graduate from Florida University, or some such place. She was quite proud that she'd gone through four or so years of tuition there without ever having read a book. Some sort of achievement in her mind. She believed this meant the US system of education was superior because all lessons were available online, and all text books condensed into crib-notes etc. Totally oblivious to the impression of massive stupidity she presented to all around her. I doubt she'd ever read a book in her life. A real book - not Facebook.

As an American, a few things… * while knowing countries isn’t necessarily a form of intelligence, it does signal a lack of intellectual curiosity. * schools have failed them. I remember taking a geography test in 5th grade where you had to name the states and capitals. I remember missing one. Frankfort, Kentucky! * my guess is that the college this crew visited was not the most competitive. My daughter goes to one of the more competitive UCs, and I’d like to think that most would crush this test. * I am sure that some aces this little geography quiz but didn’t show it on camera. I’d love a general quiz which is shared globally and the results were shared across countries. That would be more telling. * sadly, there are huge segments of Americans who are more focused on “bringing God back in our schools” then intellectual curiosity and learning.

I was at primary school in Scotland in the 1980s and we had a series of books called "Find the Place". They were a series of maps that showed where countries, cities and features like rivers were. One year, we studied the UK, one year we studied Europe, and one year we studied the rest of the world. In our end-of-term geography tests, we were asked to mark, on a blank map, various cities and rivers etc. The way it was assessed was that if we were more than one millimetre off, we got it marked wrong. Imagine that. "Put a cross on this map where Buenos Aires is located". And they had a piece of tracing paper with the correct location on it that they overlaid on our answers, measured how close we got, and we only got credit if we were within one millimetre of the precise location. We were 10 years old. So, as you can imagine, this kind of ignorance leaves me utterly stunned.

I'm a bit of a geography nerd here in Austria (I'm going to assume that general education levels are somewhat comparable across western Europe, so France will probably be similar). There's a JetPunk quiz I love to do where you are presented a map and you have to name as many countries as you can. I did this with basically all of my friends because I was genuinely curious how many they could guess. In my experience, even the least educated people can at least name 30-50 countries and know the general location of them. For university educated people (especially the ones who won't drop out) that goes up to roughly 80-100 countries. Some people seriously surprised me with 130+ countries. I genuinely think the percentage of Europeans who couldn't point at, say, Russia, Brazil, the US, China or Austrlaia on a map must be in the single digits or at least not much higher than that. In university? Virtually nobody would NOT know where those countries are on a map. Also, I try to make some of my American friends do this quiz from time to time but they categorically refuse to partake in my little social experiment. Go figure.

Sorry to say, this was already common in the 1980s... --While having July family picnics at Queenston Heights (right at the Queenston-Lewiston border bridge), we ALWAYS saw cars coming into Canada with SKIS on their roof racks. Sure, drive north until you find the Trans-Canada Highway, turn left, and keep going until you see mountains (at the West Coast). 😆 --While cross-border shopping in Niagara Falls, NY, we were always asked what it was like living in Canadian igloos, and how we got along without electricity. It was more hilarious in summers. --Buffalo, NY is notorious for heavy (Lake Erie-effect) snowstorms, but people there thought we got FAR MORE snow than them, and we lived only 10 minutes away from the Niagara Falls border crossings. You want even more like that? Look up comedian Rick Mercer and his "Talking To Americans" special from the 90s or early 2000s. He gets average citizens saying wild things about Canada. Somehow he even got American politicians to say the most ridiculous things--and they said them deadly seriously/sincerely, not knowing they were stupid jokes. ("Congratulations on finally building the Peter Mansbridge." Peter Mansbridge was a CBC news anchor at that time.)

I am British but back in the 80s I lived in Canada for a year. A couple of years later I was chatting to an American and I mentioned this, he asked me where, I said Edmonton, he said where?, I said Alberta he said where? He had heard of Calgary. What was scary about this is he was from Montana, how can you not know which province is just across the border?? I also once met an American naval officer who did not know that Tasmania was an island! I hope he was not the navigation officer. That said, many young British people are just as ignorant.

Most Europeans, I came to meet, have a very broad knowledge about many things especially languages, geography and politics. Geography is taught in elementry school in the Netherlands (kids 7 to 12 y.o.). All countries, capitals, big rivers, lakes, seas, mountain ereas of Europe, all the oceans, many countries in the Americas, Asia and a few in Africa. And in high school the kids learn about the perticular climates and landscapes there and much more.

During my visit to USA, only one person guessed right first time, as to where I am from. I am a native English speaker, and those yanks all thought I have an accent - but in my view, they have the accent, Not me. But that guy who got it right came at the boarding lounge of LAX just as I was leaving USA. Before that, all USA people would announce "I know where you come from!" So I replied "Do you?" and there it starts - "yeah, your'e a Limey!" After finding out what a Limey was - they would be caught off guard to find out that West Coast USA was as near to England as I had ever come in my whole life. Successive guesses followed - 1) Not American? No! 2) Not Canadian? No! 3) I got it, Stralian! No! Then they give up with something like "Shucks, Dang, where do you come from?" I am a New Zealander.

Trust me, it's not a generational issue. Back in the 80s I used to play Trivial Pursuit with my wife and her parents. I (French) would side with my mother-in-law (Swedish) against my wife and her dad (both US-born and raised). We'd run circles around them each and every time, with the largest knowledge gap in geography, history and science. That's how I found out, according to Trivial Pursuit, that about 60% of Americans couldn't place Florida on a map. The problem runs deeper than Gen Z.

My recollection of being in a state school in the UK 50-60 years ago is that we were probably taught where the continents were but you were expected to know by osmosis over a period the positions of the individual countries. We also had talks by visiting natives from countries in the Empire (Ghana and Bechuanaland, bow Botswana, are the ones I recall) and were shown Pathé-style film documentaries of other countries in the Empire. I knew the geographical layout of most of the world and of the UK at the age of 5 when I was given an educational toy as a Christmas present. This consisted of two shiny laminated pieces of cardboard about a foot square (30 cm), joine together on each side. On one exposed side was shown Mercator's projection of a political map of the world with the countries of the British Empire (and maybe the Commonwealth too?) shown in salmon pink and other countries in primary colours. Each had a number shown. On the opposite side was a political map of the British Isles showing the counties of the UK and the Republic of Ireland. These too had numbers. Capitals and county towns were indicated by small circles. Between the two was sandwiched a cardboard disc and a line of windows was cut through the surface cardboard to reveal information printed on the disc. The disc was printed with the number of the country or county, the country or county name, the country's capital or county town, the population and maybe more. You turned the disc which protruded from a slit at the side until you found the number you were looking for from the map. I used to play with this for hours at a time. I decided I liked the look of Surrey because it was coloured in green and was near London (coloured brown, ugh!), over 300 miles away from my childhood home and, would you believe, it is where I live now, 65 years later (and have done for going on 45 years).

It's not a full explanation but it certainly doesn't help that the country of the US calls themselves "America", which is really a continent. The US consists of states, not countries, but the word state is also used meaning nation/country. Nowhere else in the world are people confused as to the difference between country and continent but it does make some sense that (uneducated) US citizens could be.

In German for example the term "the Americas" doesn't exist. We just say "America" for both continents. However, the term is ambiguous because it can also be used synonymously for the United States.

I think all capitalistic countries (where public schooling inevitably suffers) should follow Finland's example. They made it so that private schooling is basically outlawed or very rare. Suddenly the rich and powerful were highly interested in making public schools really good because their own brats had to attend them. Our German students aren't quite where the US is, but our schools are literally falling apart, not having working toilets or the ceilings coming down, not to mention the absolute dearth of teaching personnel, because there was hardly any investment in public infrastructure for decades. Same for the health system, public transport etc. Only way to fight that is to make the rich and powerful just as dependent on said infrastructure.

My history teacher here in Finland, it was the beginning of 7 th grade, gave us a simple task: " Here is a blank A3 paper. Draw the map of the world. Draw the continents, seas, countries, rivers, cities, towns, mountains, lakes etc. .. name everything you know" It was supposed to be like 1 hr class, but we were allowed to stay longer. No-one left after 1 hour, I was there for 6 hrs. My map was far, far from being good. - but it has thrived me all these years to learn more about the world

The prime meridian separates the eastern and western hemispheres and is central on globe projection maps. The most common depiction has it running through Greenwich, London. But I believe some countries (eastern?) show it from the other side running through far eastern Russia and the pacific, with the Americas on the right and Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia on the left. The prime meridian SHOULD always be in the middle.

It's not really correct to say that it's easy for Europeans. It's different in general but the the difficulty varies greatly depending on the university. There are, of course, less renowned smaller universities of applied sciences up to the elite universities, which is of course very difficult for everyone. So basically the eight Ivy League universities (e.g. Yale, Harvard, Columbia etc.) So you can't say that in general. Also keep in mind that the US that the USA does not really perform significantly worse than Germany in the Pisa test. But the question of education in the USA is very unequal and different depending on where you live (+ money)
