Reason for the tungsten grinder and typically don't use a grinder but can still be done is so your grind marks are the same direction as your length of tungsten. It allows better flow for current while welding. Still works the other way when you sharpen the tungsten but will weld smoother if you grind it on a bench grinder or something so the grind marks on the point are directed to the end of the point. Maybe know thought mention for people that don't.
@ryurc30335 күн бұрын
The other thing that happens is contamination from the grinding disc. Especially when doing stainless, (really should be balling the tungsten for aluminum most times, not sharpening) if the last thing you were grinding on was carbon steel, the tungsten will be contaminated, therefore the weld will be contaminated. Really only matters when welding restaurant equipment, dairy equipment, medical equipment, or when it has to pass X-ray.

Perfect explanation

If you flip the axle 180° left to right your engine rotation will be making the Jeep go forward. Make the rear right tire the rear left tire and vice versa. You just flipped the axle and you’re good.
@jasonitterman43373 күн бұрын
I’m pretty sure they new this. I think Ethan flipped the intervals because it was easier than flipping the axle and then redoing all of the multi link geometry. Though cutting the diff cover and welding it back on to clear the ring gear might have made it just as much work. Who knows.

It's really bad to breath in the tungsten dust. Also some tungsten rods are radiated and breathing that dust is of course even worse. That's why they have those fancy encapsulated grinders. I built my own version, which is a cheap bench grinder with a fitting for a shop vac. I use a cordless drill to spin the rod against a cheap diamond grinding disc that I simply bolted on the outside of the right grindstone. Works a treat and you can still use it as a bench grinder.

@PennerFab5 күн бұрын
Well, that's a general common sense with grinding any metals. Respiratory protection is important no matter what you're grinding or sanding or painting. I was mostly pointing out the only Thoriated toungston is mildly radiated.
@GAIS4145 күн бұрын

Not important for this application but high pinion on a rear axle means the pinion is pulling the ring, rather than pushing it. Much less strong that way. That's OK when all you're moving is a 3/5ths scale mini jeep.
@mikelark20935 күн бұрын
I was thinking the same....although I've never busted a pinion, I was always told they are a weak point when stressed in reverse. Not like they're putting 300 horsepower to it though....
@thegroundhurts5 күн бұрын
It’s not going to be enough torque to matter. My diesel swapped 4 runner is high pinion rear, no issues with 35’s. And that is with dual cases.
@shoveI5 күн бұрын
@@thegroundhurts yeah this is just conversation for mutual learning not an argument, on a deliberately built high pinion rear axle the outboard pinion bearing will be larger to take the thrust load and the bevel will be cut to minimize the gears pushing each other apart and minimize noise with the teeth riding on that side of each other (vs. riding on the "back" of the teeth). still doesn't matter on this application I think we all agree.
@zsb234 күн бұрын
If the front and rear 3rd's are the same bolt pattern, wouldn't just swapping the front and rear 3rd's achieve reverse rotation while retaining low pinion and the proper pinion oiling system? I used to have a 66' CJ5 that I swapped FJ40 axles into and had looked into just swapping and rotating front and rear diffs to achieve high pinion front and rear, but it would have required an oil slinger to ensure the pinion stayed lubricated.
@shoveI4 күн бұрын
It can be done, Samurai have different spline counts on the front/rear axle shafts but the spider gears can be swapped to accommodate that. It resolves the oiling issue, sort of - you're still driving the wrong side of the gear teeth and pushing/pulling the wrong way on the pinion. Easiest way to visualize that is in the front while driving forward you're pulling the bottom of the ring gear toward the yoke and in the rear you're pushing the bottom of the ring gear away from the yoke. I don't think oiling is going to be a concern on this anyway because it's not like it will ever be cruising for an hour on the highway.
@TLervis4 күн бұрын

@9:00, the conversation about tungsten sharpening - When I worked in a production shop, we had a bench grinder with a V groove in the middle of the shop. The trick is to sharpen a bunch of electrodes at once, and just swap when you need a sharper one instead of taking the time to sharpen it. When you run out of fresh ones, sharpen them all at once. We also used short end caps on the torches, and then cut our tungsten in half to avoid sharpening even longer. I think I'd have 6 or 8 sharp at one time.

Honestly, once you use the tungsten grinder, you will absolutely prefer it. They’re cheap and do an excellent job at grinding the tungsten at any preferred angle leaving perfect stations and in a professional setting it is key but for novice welders, carry-on.

Always awesome to watch the progress of your projects where you push the limits of the mechanics of what a vehicle can do or not. And l say keep on pushing!

Can I please start a vote for RC control of this mini crawler....!? Out of every build you guys have done, this one deserves that option if ever there was a reason to have it.
