@@DStead2239 On the other hand I have never seen worse tanks than on some 2 stoke mopeds and stationary engines I worked on. A 75 Flandria Starline4 stored for 30 years with about half a tank of premix, had about two inches of petrified gas/oil mixed with rust scales, same on a 50's Sachs. Imo the best is either full to the brim or bone dry.
@DStead2239
@DStead2239 Күн бұрын
@@jean-charlesweyland129 And did you have anything besides those stored in the exact same fashion for 30 years in the exact same place under the exact same conditions or have a control sample? thought not... Anything other than fulled to the brim is not good as there's oxygen to oxidize, the next best option is quality fuel with quality oil as a premix to leave an oil coating especially if it's efi as any gasoline with less oil content will break down faster, the worst thing is a fully empty tank or castor oil based two-stroke mix or any fuel with ethanol content. Dead empty rots more of a system as more is exposed, castor oil turns to syrup and clogs systems and the sugars stick rings or rotor seals and are a mess, ethanol washes away protective oils from fuel or 2 stroke oil that lubricate and protect fuel systems aswell as engine internals.. Highest octane non ethanol fuel and highest grade synthetic oil or race 2-stroke mix is what you sit cars with, your injectors, pumps, rubber lines, will all thank you.

Thank you so much for this video. It brings back so many memories. My parents bought a 1979 Mazda GLC station wagon in 1980, and drove it until I went off to college in 1989. The deal my parents made with me was "You can drive the car, but you must maintain it and your grades." - I did both, and became familiar with the local salvage yards near my school. During one visit, I stumbled upon a 1981 Mazda GLC station wagon, that hadn't been there the week before, when I was helping a friend find parts for his Ford Escort (what a shitbox that was). Anyway, the 1981 had a 5 speed manual transmission and air conditioning. Our 79 had a 4 speed and NO air conditioner, so we worked out a deal and bout the 81. The 81 supposedly had a blown engine, so our intent was to swap the 79 engine into the 81. The very next day, the 79 spun a bearing. Well, long story short, the 81 engine wasn't blown. A casting plug in the head had popped out, dumping oil and antifreeze together. A coupe of years later, I bought another 81 GLC station wagon, same color as the first, also with a 5 speed and AC, and a supposedly blown engine. We towed it home and I immediately pulled the valve cover and sure enough, same casting plug problem. The first 2 years of driving the 81 we pulled from the salvage yard were pretty brutal in the winter. NO HEAT, which was strange, as the heater in the 79 would cook you. Well, while doing some work on the 81, I discovered that we forgot to put the thermostat back in the 81, after we flushed the cooling system. Once I put it back in, it produced heat, just like the 79. All three GLC station wagons had the 1450cc inline 4 cylinder engines, not the rotary, and all rear wheel drive. The station wagons were the only rear wheel drive models in the GLC family though. In some ways I miss these cars, and other ways I'm just thankful to be alive, as none of them were power houses and they really couldn't get out of their own way. The cool part though, especially as a "poor starving college student" was they were awesome on gas mileage (30 mpg or better, and I once got 45 mpg, when I drafted behind a semi convoy for 65 miles on I-80 from the Iowa border into Illinois) and they were pretty easy and straight forward to work on, except for pulling and reinstalling the starters.

Hey there! Just a quick tip! I'm a multi-purpose mechanic at a tool and machinery rental store, and from experience, we once tried lubricating brakes parts, pins and various moving parts with either copper anti-seize or the purple or orange Kleen-Flo ceramic anti-seize stuff only to find out that it dries up in less than a year and actually makes stuff stick together. Our best results so far was Kleen-Flo's clear silicone paste; any brand would do I guess but it's just what we use. But after a year (we do annual inspections, maintenance and cleaning/greasing of every moving parts on our machines) that silicone paste still looks brand new.

1:50 Rotaries do not bleed the gas off. On a regular ICE if it is flooded, you just wait. You cant do that on a rotary because of the 2/3rd rule. You dont need to know what that is, but there will always be gasoline trapped in one of the rotor faces. If you add more assuming it will evaporate, you could flood it. If you do, remove spark plugs or add 2 cycle oil via a vac hose (upside down in a glass).
@te71se

@ It is easier if you look up the eccentric shaft (the Rotaries version of a crank shaft). Here is a brief summery. A 1.3L 13B 2 Rotor engine doesnt convert to what a Ottocycle would be at 1.3 liters because the 13B has 6 rotor faces. (each rotor has 3 faces) They are timed apart (the explosions dont happen at the same time), so there will always 1 of the 3 faces of one of the 2 rotors trapping gasoline that cannot escape. (2 Rotors, 3 Faces per rotor) There is a post under the RX7 Reddit by “edoriel” that explains the math, but it just boils down to the how the “swept velocity” of the 6 total faces is measured. I think if you look up a Wankel Rotary engine animation, you will get what I am poorly chipping away at. Just remember there are two of those rotors typed apart from each other. Another part of that is the “valves.” Rotary “valves” are nothing like an Ottocycle OHV. Gasoline being a vapor most of the time, wants to float around. It cannot float up out of a “iron” (that is what the oval the triangle rotates around in is called. Also called a housing sometimes) TLDR: 2 Rotors, 3 Faces on each rotor, they are timing apart, and best to Google “rotary eccentric shaft”

My 75 Chevy Luv had double leading shoe brakes like those. For those who may not know regular brakes are single leading shoe brakes. When braking the cylinder pushes on the shoes and as the wheel rotates the shoes tend to spin along with the drum and puts more of the braking force on the rear shoe. That's why one shoe is longer than the other. On the dual leading shoes each cylinder pushes just one pad and the rotation of the drum pushes the pads back against the cylinder instead of pushing both pads on one cylinder. These are actually stronger brakes than the single leading shoe brakes. Manufacturers went with a single leading shoe brake because they are cheaper even though they are not the better set up. They eventually went to disc brakes because they are better than either of the drum brake types.

There’s this nomenclature that it has to be perfect before you can enjoy it or what not. That’s the farthest from the truth there is. Honestly a vehicle is a ton more fun when it’s not perfect so you don’t worry about every little bump or rock or everything. I haven't before commented on Junkyard Digs, Pole Barn Garage, Vice Grip Garage, or Budget Buildz. Those are thus far my favorite four, and I rarely watch anything else anymore. I am posting to say that I've subscribed here to see you work on this cool little truck. I love small old trucks like this. My dad had a Chevy Luv, which was very cool and unfortunately totaled by some idiot in a Corvette. I didn't even know this particular Mazda truck existed. I imagine it will be difficult to find parts for, but I like the charm and character of these little light-duty pickups. These trucks represent a more modest time when auto companies/the public weren't yet obsessed with giant behemoth trucks that are rarely needed or necessary. The fact is that most of those mammoth quad cab pickups are being driven around with squeaky clean beds and 0 mud/dirt on them. They have been influenced to exist by marketing and the appeal to the insecurity of men, who buy in to the need to project this power to random strangers on the road. Large trucks and SUVS provide higher profit margins to car companies as well. It's mostly just more raw material needed to build something larger. Therefore, more profit. I'm not suggesting everyone drive a tiny truck, I'm suggesting they are adequate for the needs of most people, who simply need to haul some things or tow a small trailer. I personally envision owning a small classic truck like this, with a bit upgraded power, and a a bit modified suspension to handle the road a bit more like a car. No slammed to the ground B.S. though, I'm not into that. Anyway, cool truck, and please don't change the cool vintage blue/green color. I hope you can source parts and build it back up, best of luck to you and your channel. I am genuinely hoping to see more content on this little truck.

Gotta get those secondaries opening! I was imagining at the start of the video, “what if it has more potential and they’re shut”, turned out they were!

This makes me miss my old 1984 RX7 with a 12A and a 5 speed manual. It was a northeastern car, but it was in fairly good shape for it's age. No Bondo or filler.

The extra break line is there to prevent stress fracturing from heat expansion. With heat cycles that occur normally with an engine compartment the line will expand and contract. If it's tight it focuses the bending action of the expansion on the joints where it connects to the master cylinder and the break portioning control module. Over time this will break the line off at the attachment points. With the extra line acting as a sort of spring it doesn't stress the tubing around the attachment points as much.

Screaming along at 4500rpm for hours on end is exactly what that engine needed and what rotaries can do pretty much indefinitely. The oil metering system isn't terrible so long as you keep your oil clean and top it up (about 1 qt every 1000 miles). Mazda used it on every rotary it made for a reason. That truck might seem comically slow and tiny nowadays, but consider what it was like back in the mid 70's when 4000lb luxo-barges only made 150hp. Compared to 60-70hp piston powered import economy cars of the day , that 120hp little pickup was a rocketship!

One thing that always impressed me with the rotary engines is the size. The four barrel carbs they put on them were as big as the engine.

31:54 What you got there is a somewhat funky system, all because of that prop valve. Mazda used those things atleast to the end of the '80s My 626 has one too! Purposefully or not, that valve will shut the passage to the specific line that bursts, cracks, gets opened etc. And this happens when somebody touches the pedal next time (sometimes even on its own) So basically blowing a line will leave all other 3 wheels with functioning brakes. Hence why it has 2 "front" lines going into the valve. When bleeding those I have found out that reverse bleeding helps a lot, It does not let the valve shut off "dry" because not all lines have fluid. The other way is gravity bleeding, which you guys actually managed to do! Im not sure if you guys figured it out, decided to comment with the video still running.

Rotary engine are smooth and pull well. They do use oil and gas mileage isn't great but when they are running well they sing a beautiful song.
