Ostrich, I've been binge watching your videos for a few weeks and really enjoying your content. My dad passed away a couple of years ago and I inherited a bunch of his woodworking tools, so I'm trying to make room in my garage so that I can actually use them. Your videos have been helpful in giving me the resolve to rehome some of the tools, so they all end up getting used instead of collecting dust. I gave a craftsman band saw to my neighbor that was in really bad shape and he rebuilt it with new tires, bearings, and a coat of paint and it really helped me to feel I had made the right decision. I do have a couple things I could really use, and this video has given me some ideas on how to acquire them. Thanks for your hard work and the excellent content.

Ostrich, The thing that works best for me is buying tool combos on sale and selling the items i don't need. usually this nets you a decent return in addition to potentially getting the tool for free.

Ostrich - I'm a Veteran who has been in the sand but never stuck my head in it like this bird. Now that I'm retired from the Army as a Disabled Vet. (90%/100%) I'm using my retirement to give back to other Veterans in need. Still not sticking my head in the sand though! I recently started working with a laser engraver and have begun basic wording projects, which is how I stumbled across your videos. Love what you do, this was a very informative video for a 'tool' impoverished guy! Brings me hope that my limited funds can be saved for helping Veterans directly rather than for buying tools. Thanks again...despite this video being 7 months old, for me it was very relevant/current! God Bless!

Ostrich I just recently started working more in the field rather than pushing paper. I love physical labor so I thought I'd give it a try. On that note, I appreciate you taking the time I'm making this video. I'm definitely going to try some of these methods because we all know that this industry can be pricey. Thanks again! Keep it up!

We just subscribed! I will take your advice and contact some of the manufacturers. I worked as a trim carpenter and superintendent for a custom home company years ago. When I retired we bought a used motorhome and decided to sell our home and travel. Along with selling our home, I sold all of my nail guns, machinery and most of my hand tools. After being on the road for several years we decided to purchase a piece of land and settle down again. We built a workshop because we want to build a home and I want to do as much of the work as I can myself. Now I am in the process of acquiring tools again. Boy, have they gotten expensive! Thank you for the video and advice. Keep up the good work!

Dacho- I just started wood working recently and watch every youtube videos. All of them shows lots of techniques with nice tools such as table saw, miter saw, router, and other tons of stuff except you. I live in an apartment, don’t have pickup truck. You showed that you cut lumber at home depot’s parking lot and on your apartment parking lot! That was amazing! Now I’m thinking how I can afford fancy tools within tight budget. You gave me a lots of tips! Thank you Mr. Ostrich!

Ostrich. Being extremely handy I'm a go to friend for repairs or remodels or builds or flips, etc and I end up with whatever tools I needed for the project that I didn't have because they don't have a use for it. Also friends will grab and give me any tool that breaks whether it's theirs or someone they know giving it to me and I usually am able to repair the tool easily with materials I have on hand or at a very small cost.

All good advice. One tip I didn't hear didn't mention. Your workplace. Keep an eye out for things your company no longer uses. Put a feeler out to family and friends to let you know if their workplace is discarding something. I've personally been BLESSED with a 3hp Rockwell table saw, a Delta bandsaw, and a Jet spindle sander all 100% free, because the tools were no longer used. Yes, it was older equipment but for $0 I'll take it. Even parts can sometimes be had - the motor went out on the bandsaw. I picked one up at work that was on a low hour machine that was getting scrapped. Went from a 1/2HP to a 1HP just like that. The motor came mounted to a steel plate with casters, it was the perfect size for a mobile base for the bandsaw.

Maybe this is asking too much, but what would you say if you are just starting out? Not that I expect everything for free but I would like to be able to get in with a company to start trying out products and reviewing them, maybe getting some for free at some point. BTW, also love Den of Tools! You can always do a shout out to Janesville, Iowa lol.

@@bradhjelmeland2144 search through Amazon and find companies just getting started who need any promotion they can get that would be the easiest. The next thing to do is up your Instagram game and take pictures daily of any tool that you just happen to be using and I mean every single day and tag the name of the company in the post and they will get back to you eventually and start offering your tools

9/10 Ostriches agree that free tools are the best tools. Man, clamps are expensive and everyone could use more- that was an awesome win! I don't have a KZbin channel or anything, so I kinda doubt that tool companies would want to send me something for no free advertisement but following them on social media and commenting... I can do that. If I win anything, I'll make sure to let you know!

(Ostrich) Greetings from Nashville Tennessee. I have been following you on Instagram and KZbin for about a year and a half now and I really appreciate that you haven’t sold out. I am also a maker and I have a old Delta Unisaw that I use as my primary table saw. The only problem with it is the fence. It has the old style fence that uses a tube in the front and back of the table for the fence to ride along and clamp down on. I’m constantly searching for a better fence to go on it so if you get a new one that you don’t like or can’t use for some reason please keep me in mind. I’m also struggling with a Wen bandsaw that only has 6” of recut capacity. I’m sure that you know where I’m going with that so once again please keep me in mind when you get a new one. 😊 Now that I’m done begging for tools I just want to say thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences with everyone. I know that you spend a lot of time on these videos and even more time on the projects that you share. Keep up the good fight and I’ll be looking for your next video. Sincerely, Jerry Jones JonesCo Woodworks

Ostrich - great video and main tip is that don't take rejection or no's personal as your going to get a bunch of those as well and it comes with asking. Just be grateful when they do say yes and if promising anything keep up your end although try and promise as little as possible and never promise a favorable or good review for a tool, only an honest one. Your own credibility is worth more than a free tool in the long run.

Ostrish I've been on the fence for far too long about getting a bandsaw so when I came across your vid today, I jumped on it. You shared more pros, cons, tips and alternatives in 20 minutes than I've got from all the other band saw vids I've watched combined. By the end of that video. I was a new subscriber and had confidently made a decision regarding my band saw dilemma. Thanks! So now I've spent the last 3 hours or so binge watching your channel. I wish I could spend the rest of the day watching them but I'm being nagged by Alexa with my to do list (your vids have now been added to it). Anyway, I have a new dilemma after watching this one. I'm not an influencer. I don't have a channel. I've never even posted a video of my cat. However, I'm in direct contact with customers 40 hours a week in an ideal retail setting.....THEEEE big box store. After watching this one, I've been trying to figure out an ethical way to possibly increase my chances of number 1, standing out, number 2, have my request for complementary tools granted, and number 3, accept them without having to make any agreements or promises to promote any product that we don't carry. With that being said, I'd appreciate your opinion on someone in my position asking for tools that are of brands we don't carry? Or do I limit my inquiries to only the brands we sell? Or does the whole idea fall under the conflict of interest umbrella? 🤔 I'm a bit conflicted...any thoughts on this? Thanks. Keep up the comprehensive, informative, honest and well rounded videos! I'll be watching

OSTRICH - Your suggestions could not have come at a better time. I have dreamed of building things by myself all of my life. I believe the sense of accomplishment and pride you get from building things for yourself or for someone else cannot be more rewarding. Finally (at almost 60 😮)! I am close to getting the space where I will be able to achieve my goal. I will apply your recommendations to hopefully provide some of the tools I will be needing. Thank you so very much, I will keep a close look in your channel as I start this wonderful new endeavor.

Ostrichs everywhere! I have scored some free items just because I help people out. I have gotten two generators. The guy that had one had a power outage and, of course it wouldn't start. I took mine over to him while I rebuilt his carb. His wife wanted the full up stand-by generator. After that was installed he asked me if I wanted the portable...for free!

Ostrich - Thank you for some great ideas! My free tools have been limited to friends and family and watching FB marketplace for freebies. Sometimes the product doesn't work or is rusty or just needs batteries. I fixed a free $500 log splitter with a $15 capacitor...

Ostrich - just found your channel and I’m really enjoying it. I’m a former cabinet maker who was forced to give up my shop and move into an apartment building for to medical issues about 10 years ago. Now that my kids have moved out I have 2 extra bedrooms and was thinking about starting my own channel with a “micro shop” in one of the spare bedrooms. If by any chance you have any advice I’d be totally open to all of it. 😊

I literally wouldn't have considered contacting companies. A lot of people on social media say "Brand X sent me this" so you assume it's because they're sponsored. In reality, they've probably done what you did here in some of these tips! Nice one, tips! Thanks
