The smallish furniture manufacturer in my town uses metal benches that have holes like that, and I saw them used them similarly like in the video, but the holes were a bit wider. They make doors, cabinets and other stuff. I told my neighbor after my trip to the place, since he was a woodworker and he had taught me some of the basic when I was young. A year later he had made his own in wood. He was really pleased. This was back in the 90s btw.

to avoid routing slots into the black table top, if you were not using it as a permanent outfeed table, you could lower the black top and add flat sheet the thickness of the height difference that sits between the two mitre tracks and have locating pegs on that sheet that allow it to stay in position. If needed could add two more sheets on the outer edges if the one in the middle was not enough.

Cordless tools I've largely standardized on Makita. Just because it was the first drill i acquired. I do like Bosch for jig saws because that was the first quality corded tool i ever bought. I have a Skil branded circular saw from sometime before the dawn of time. My benchtop belt sander is from harbor freight. Works ok. I use a cheap Wen dust collector which works pretty well. I guess I'm pretty tool agnostic, not counting battery powered stuff.

Thanks, I enjoyed watching the video, I made the same mistake with the double thickness top but I just bought 2 out of birch ply, ready made, for significantly less than the jig to make them costs!

I'm sorry, but you seriously underestimate the danger of cutting these materials without adequate protection from dust. You have a responsibility to ensure that your viewers do not inadvertantly think it's OK to work with mdf and PIR? like this. You take the trouble to explain the dangers of contact adhesive so why not mdf?

My plan is to skip buying a table saw and start, with my first saw cuts with handsaws and jig saw. The next thing that I will by is going to be a large band saw.

Why not have the holes CNC milled? Nothing can be more precise than that. it's just a single trip to the CNC shop

Sorry, I only made it to 10:30 into this video and have a question. Why did you spend the time and effort on a knot hole that would have been cut off if you simply turned the piece 180 degrees to cut it down to fit into your planer?

Butter…I do appreciate your precision and craftsmanship, but I do find you quite condescending. No ill intent, it just seems you’re talking to kindergartners and your use of “stuff” and “thingy” are clearly disingenuous. You know exactly what you’re talking about, so using terms like those are just an effort to seem naive and relate to the novices watching you. I hope you take this as “constructive criticism”. Hood you can tone those things down, it might do you some good in the long run. Regards.

hey. great video. I dunno if you are getting paid by bridge city, but their products are stupidly high priced, gimmicky, and arguably trash. I really feel bad for people, like myself, that accidently bought their stuff because of KZbinrs hocking it as good. lie nielsen is the gold standard, and even they aren't as pricey, and they use iron, not aluminum.

Solid wood from laminated 2x4s, 13" wide with a 12" tool well, metal wood stop built in, face vise on one side. to hold down flat pieces I use a clamped stop and a hinged piece of wood that when flatted puts a great hold on the edge of wood held buy the metal stop. No holes, no tracks.

Something I figured out when I was building an assembly table is to check your nearest Habitat for Humanity ReStore (assuming you have one near you). They almost always have Formica (or its equivalent), for dirt cheap as long as you're not super picky about the color.

Formica is bad for a countertop but elsewhere it's brilliant. My uncle made us a formica clad kitchen ~30 years ago and it all looks like new, even the curved surfaces and corners.

Right, cuz glue and epoxy won’t mess up your fancy new bench top? I think you haven’t defined the problem which seems to be not protecting the bench top from your general sloppiness. Yes, using a little forethought before you slop glue and resin everywhere. I’ve had dog holes on my work bench, and 1/4” MDF screwed to 3/4” ply for over 20 years in case I ever need to replace the MDF. There are valid reasons old timers kept work benches simple and clean, and they included dog holes. Love that you’ve managed to get yourself LOTS of advertisers. lol

Maybe if you used the dog hole reamer in conjunction with the first jig for the dog holes, your experience with that jig would have been better. Knowing that, was your rant justified ????

Instead of hard wood edging, an alternative is to just create a frame using 4040 aluminum. The 4040 aluminum already has the channel for the clamps, similar to the Festool MFT. 4040 aluminum is also not that expensive.

Just use your festool track saw to cut the Formica, way easier and clean instead of scoring.

Having worked in a wood shop for 12 years, I have some experience working with MDF. All of the holes that you have in your tabletop need to be sealed to prevent them from absorbing moisture and swelling. Hopefully, you don't bring a drink into the shop set it down on the tabletop, and spill it, sending all of that liquid into those dog holes. We used wood glue and a little bit of water to seal up the exposed/worked-on parts of the MDF to prevent that from happening.
