Can an OTF Handle Survival? (Or Will it Get Destroyed?)

While many other channels are not able to own or really use switchblades, I thought I would put my own OTF or auto knife on the line to see if it would get destroyed or if it would survive the survival test of batoning, fire starting, oand a few other tasks.

I have been using my boker kalashnikov otf for pretty much everything for about 5 months now. when I got it I put it through worse than what you were doing on this video just to see what it can handle. it's held up very well. the only downfall I've found is when I was setting up my garden, I kept getting dirt into the action and it wouldn't retract. I had to take it apart and clean it. not a big deal in the garage, but definitely not ideal in the woods. and the spine on mine is very sharp, great for the ferro rod. good stuff, I'm glad to see someone talking about this kind of stuff.

I’d carry a more substantial knife if I were traveling through wilderness like where you are. I hear the Benchmade Freek and Adamas are beast folder knives. Auto knives are really only for light cutting and slashing. I wouldn’t bet my life on them in a survival situation.

Cold Steel Ti Lite count? I would not use my Sons Infidel. Pretty sure hard use in a woods environment would brake it.

Best advice is when camping or bushcrafting always make sure you have a fixed blade knife or hatchet. I use my Spyderco Tenacious several times a day but would never go camping, bushcrafting etc without my Tom Brown Tracker #1. It's a fixed blade knife hatchet beast combo.

Unlock any folding or OTF blade so the blade is free floating and not under any stress. Use it as a steel wedge with a baton tap to start a split. Then use the knife to carve a wooden wedge. Even a 20 inch stick with a quick wedge end will work, doesn't have to be short and fat like a steel wedge. Baton the wedge and split the wood. Repeat. There is only stress on the knife when removing it from the split lines you make. You can also get to the dry inner wood by simply removing the outer bark and wet wood with your knife. Need a fireboard or net needle etc. and can't or don't want to baton a wedge? Carve a branch into a plank with your knife... but bring a sharpener. There is no reason to baton a folder or OTF if you just use the ancient simple machines (force multipliers) in your primitive thinking. Lever, pulley, wheel, screw (spiral incline plane), incline plane and the wedge (two incline planes back to back). Mankind did a lot of surviving for millenia with just a sharp rock and no fire...no fire like soldiers often have to do without as well for tactical reasons. It can be done. Always keep it simple, consider all options and improvise. All the best, Mike.
