We're all looking for ways to get better at riding our mountain bikes, and if we can find some tips, tricks and hacks to fast-track that improvement we're all for it! With that in mind, Neil decided to see if it was possible to teach a roadie how to get comfortable hitting MTB jumps in an hour. With a willing volunteer, a stick and some perfect sets of jumps at the Railyard Bike Park in Rogers, AR, could he make it happen?

Bunny hopping. Its pretty much the same on hard tails and full sus bikes. What worked for me was to push down on the front suspension, lower your body weight, and jump like you would when reaching for a high up tree branch. Getting the back wheel up on a hard tail was the second hardest skill I've learned. It shift your body weight down while on the center of the bike, and then motion forward over the bars as you shoot back up (like diving in a pool).

Wheelies and manuals. They're my weakest link. I can get the front wheel over objects but just trying to keep it in the air for extended periods is just not working. I know it's me and not my bikes because everyone else can absolutely shred on my bikes with their current set ups. Oh well, I will keep reviewing and adjusting, I will get there one day.

Breaking correctly. It ain't just about stopping!!!! To entail trial and error as part of my method is a must, as is having/knowing the quality/tech to use. IE hydraulics, resin pads, etc. The largest part of my method was learning how to maintain my own breaks, and when success was made, too then; and every time there after, increasing my speeds. Breaking is akin to jumping, but more aptly named....don't break, and get broke....n. Ha! Get er done peeps!!!! You can do it!!!

First Jack, now Lewi, soon the whole GMBN crew will be shredding like bosses! Cool. Get them jumping well then teach them how to whip. Whips always look cool. Just something awesome about bikes being sideways in the air. 😎

Repetition is the key to any success. Might take you 10 minutes to master it, might take you 10 months. Key is to keep practicing. I landed on the top of my head today pretty hard, knew I shouldn’t have tried to make a stump into a jump

I'm crap at jumping, have been for ever and I (sort of) blame Neil for it! I was booked to do a skills day with him at Llandegla but had to postpone it due to a crash, by the time I was fit enough to rebook he'd sodded off to a new job, might even have been for GMBN. To make matters worse Chris Smith did the exact same thing to me a few years ago, delayed this time due to work commitments. So I can't jump for toffee and it's all GMBN's fault 🤣

One of the biggest mistakes here is your doing it on a full sus. Do it on a hard tail with hard suspension setting on the front so any mistakes you do it will go right to your body. Also use a cheap bike that will force you to take care of how you land. Cause if you hit the ground too hard you will either snap the derailleur, frame or the wheels will bend. When you do all the above you will get a better feel for the whole terrain and how your bike reacts.
