I'm an older rider (67) who grew up racing XC and still rides a 2008 26" XC racer with all that implies for geometry. I never really learned to jump (drops, yes, jumps, no). Been trying to use the compress the forks and drive upward method for a while and never got beyond the sense of impending doom. Best jump tutorial in the history of the internet. Absolutely nailed it with the slow motion, and DISTINGUISHING the different types of jumps, and the subtle differenced need to be proficient with each type. That's what EXPERIENCE brings, is reading the faces of the jumps going into them, thus great limiting the chance you'll have a bad result. I REALLY WISH I had access to this when I first started, so I wouldn't have had to "un-learn and re-learn" how to jump correctly. SOOO good, and if people are really serious about getting better, they can literally go flim themselves on just about any phone, slow it down, and compare it to this video side-by-side. My favorite part of this...is you NEVER talk about "pre-loading" into the face of the jump. Crouching slightly...OK, I get that, so it's a more dynamic position, but the "pre-load" is a crock, based on everthing I see. I think that's the most useless information about jumping that you can give. It does nothing. The face of the jump is going to force the suspension to sink into the travel and "load" it. If that was critical, then no one would be able to get any height on hard tails.

I could weep for joy. There are so many vague explanations for this out there that I’m starting to think people don’t actually know what they do, but rather just figure it out and then use their instincts and muscle memory to perform jumps, but can’t actually explain it. Thank you so much! One nugget of wisdom I got elsewhere that I might add to your video, is the realization that a hard kicker is just a J- hop, except it’s doing the first half of the hop for you, and all you need to do is finish it. Watch you jumps in slow motion and you’ll see it. 👌

lol. I always ask that after someone tells me to pop. I'm always like, "Okay. Sure. But what does 'pop' mean though? How?" It's meaningless without an explanation. Some people say to push as hard as you can into the lip. Others say to pull hard. Some say just bunny hop. One year trying to learn to jump properly, and nothing has clicked. Me and the wife literally spend 8 hour days on weekends just hitting jumps over and over again. Is it really supposed to be this hard to learn? It still feels like pure luck whenever we clear a jump. ugh...so frustrating.

The best overall summary of jumping I've seen. Seems like an interesting combo of what Ryan Leach and Fluid focus on (the pop) vs what GMBN focuses on (the bunny hop). For most jumps seems like the pop with right speed is the easiest way to go. Do you have any advice on how to make sure your rebound speed is adjusted right too? Or do you think most of the videos advising slower rebound speed are ignoring the bigger problem of having your weight to far back (which was my problem jumping which I'm working to correct). Is the pop basically a strategically timed English bunny hop, with the focus being on pushing down into suspension to create lift instead of pulling up on that bike?
@AprilRideMTB4 жыл бұрын
Hey Benjamin! Thanks! Yeah i think most of the time technique will overcome any issues with rebound speed but we will do a video on suspension setup too :). Most of the time when people get kicked its from being tense and letting the bike really get kicked off the end.

I'm no expert with jumping, but I thought people tend to nose dive when they lean back too much and the rear shock pops up the rear wheel and makes the bike start front-flipping (hence the nose dive)? I need to work on the pop though. I usually think about pumping into the kicker/takeoff and forget to pop... But I do notice if I don't pump into the kicker at all, then I get absolutely no height. I also noticed that it's waaay easier to jump if you set your shocks to the highest compression (or lock them out). I heard faster rebound helps, but I think if it's too high, then it doesn't work well with larger kickers, where you need pump "longer" into the takeoff. Lastly, I tend to push the front bars out during the jump like a bunny hop (but I don't bunny hop from the takeoff), otherwise I tend to land rear first into an accidental manual. Is this because I'm not popping and only pumping into the takeoff? Or is that all the wrong way to think about it?

Hey Hobbes, great questions. I think some of the stuff you are experiencing is from some small issues with technique. It sounds like maybe you are staying a little far back on the bike and not doing much of a pop forward. If you have correct technique none of the other stuff with bike setup really matters too much. It can make a huge difference if you aren't using proper technique though.

I want to explain you that i saw lots of jump videos and your video is, in my opinión, the best. I’m a beginner and now I’m learnig how to jump. The "pop" jump is really incredible because, like you explained in your video, you can almost do all jumps. Thank you so much for your videos. I’m very grateful to you. Now I am enjoying every moment with the MTB. Thank you from Barcelona (Spain).

Learned a very valuable lesson you mention in this video, the REALLY hard way. Did a rock ramp, not too high, only about 2 feet, but when I came down, foot slipped off the pedal and cleats ripped up my shin pretty good. Then I remember you saying, “always point your toes down”! Did the next 4 laps with blood streaming down my leg, but did the jump flawlessly each time! Will never forget that part of the instruction again! Thanks for a great channel!

Best “how to jump” video I have seen. I like how you broke it down into different types of take offs since they require a different approach. Now I just have to just apply this! Thanks

One of the best videos out there for learning jumps. I've been learning for a while and sort of figured out the 'pop' method for myself as it felt safest, but hearing from someone who knows what they're talking about *when* it's the right thing to do, and also really importantly why, is so useful. I'm gonna hit those jumps so much more confidently now.

One thing that helped me recently which I never knew when trying to learn to jump and that I never saw addressed until recently was where to bring the bars. I always thought that you needed to bring it to your chest. But mtb Alan mentioned to bring them to your hips instead. Looking at jumping videos now I see the bars to hips. That small detail has really helped my jumping. Might be something worth mentioning to newer jumpers. Keep up the great videos.

Brilliant teaching as always. I‘m happy that the coach I hired this summer taught me the correct „pop“ technique. Now it‘s time to master the flat takeoff jumps that make up most of the jumps on my home trails.

I am 39 and getting into Riding E-MTB's, currently have a heavy Hard Tail, I've been nervous to take it on these trails, & more aggressive MTB trails. I road dirtbikes a ton but never got into jumping them really, so this is semi-new. I think last time I did bunny hops and pops I was 14. So I appreciate this video. Gives me a little more confidence. But the Bike I ride Weighs 70lbs. So it can be difficult to get any height from a pop. I weigh 155lbs, so ya, love how you show by popping over the curb. Thanks for the info.

Once again, Kyle this was an awesome video. The graphics (arrows, notes, etc.) that you attach to show the correct position are invaluable. You're efforts are appreciated. Thanks April for being humble enough to allow the display of your crash.

Wow!!! I haven't tried to put this into practice yet. Sometimes I feel like I can jump and sometimes I mess it up. This explanation has just nailed it in my head. The difference in needing to use the two different bunny hop methods for the first two types of ramps. No one has explained it like that before. Massive thanks.

No need for hope.... These are the best tutorials on MTB that I've seen! I've been waiting for this one especially and you certainly delivered! I'd even say this was the best yet.... While I had figured a lot of these things out on my own over the last few months, this breakdown still taught me a lot! For example, the WHY behind a nose dive... Thanks for making this and I'll be much more confident my next time out!

Came off the pedals popping off a small jump in the woods here (on my trekking bike, with no suspension at all :)). Straight to KZbin, look if you have a video that explains what I did wrong, of course you do, and it explains everything and more. Really, really appreciate the effort, and the motivational boost to go try it again! Thanks!
