I was born and live in Bavaria… I will say it’s 100% terrible for the league. Everything below Bayern is super competitive but they make our league look like a joke at times. The problem is I prefer our system where we don’t really have billionaire owners from America, Saudi Arabia etc. Bayerns dominance will eventually come to an end, so I am looking forward to that. Our academy players get into the first team which gives lots of hope to future talent

It would be wonderful to have a strong Bavarian rivalry where Nurnberg get to hurt Bayern here and there, even if your team isn't challenging for the title. It's crazy and sad that your club (along with HSV and Schalke) have fallen so badly in recent years. 😢

Of course it's terrible. It shouldn't even need saying. Pretty much every change in the game in the last 30 years has been designed to give the richer clubs even more of an advantage than they already had, and the result is an uncompetitive division. We can't be smug in England either. We used to take pride in how many clubs could put up a title challenge in any given year, but now you can point to the clubs who'll finish in the top 6 every year. Is there really any point to the rest of the clubs even being in the premier league now? They just make up the numbers. Sadly the people who run the game only care about money, and if that means having a locked in elite that make selling rights overseas easier, then that's what they are happy with.
@Monaleenian
@Monaleenian 9 ай бұрын
Did you predict that Brighton and Newcastle would finish in the top 6 last year?
@RevStickleback
@RevStickleback 9 ай бұрын
@@Monaleenian There will be exceptions, but Newcastle now have Saudi money, and Brighton are punching above their weight aided by having an owner pump in £400 million. What it really shows is that we take the odd club breaking into the top 6 as a sign that things are fine, but the very fact that such a thing is regarded as interesting, rather than completely normal, shows the state of the game today. Go back to the 80s, and predicting the top 6 was incredibly difficult. Sadly the couch potatoes of today prefer to have an elite set of clubs at the top, and keeping those tv viewers happy is all the organisers care about.
@Monaleenian
@Monaleenian 9 ай бұрын
@@RevStickleback I'll take that as a no then. Why do American couch potatoes apparently not like to see the same teams finishing at the top in their sports year in, year out?
@RevStickleback
@RevStickleback 9 ай бұрын
@@Monaleenian Hard to say. Maybe because it's such a big country, with sports set up so there's a big team for virtually every region, with measures in place to stop the biggest clubs from dominating, that you don't get the same level of gloryhunting. You hear fans in England now, ones who've only really known football from the last 20 years, and they talk about the 'big six' clubs, and that's it. They have no interest in anybody else. And why should they? Beyond the occasion freak result, those other clubs never challenge, let alone win anything. They are pointless 'also-rans' now. Look at the FA Cup, for example. That used to be a great trophy, and part of that was because so many clubs felt they had a genuine shot at winning it. Now, even mid-table premier league clubs barely bother, because they know the big clubs are just on such a different level. I'm not even sure what your angle is. Are you suggesting having all the talent and wealth in the hands of a small set of perpetually challenging clubs is an improvement?

In a sense it should be a good thing because it should inspire the other clubs even more to stop the dominance. Money is a big factor of course but rivals like Dortmund haven't helped themselves since Klopp left. Changing managers too often...and almost accepting as soon as they bought him that they would sell Haaland at some stage.
@sky3down367
@sky3down367 Жыл бұрын
its not a good thing tho, yes it inspires them but once you see them win every year and you have nothing to show that you can stop them eventually like now they gave up hope, plus even if a team is lucky enough to somehow beat them bayern for the past decade have not even being focused on the league only the champions, so once they lose it will make bayern even better, they lose once and now they know that they need to try in the league again and all they have to do is wait them out since eventually the team that beat them will have those players leave for a tougher league or they arent good enough thus bayern will keep up being able to spend more than them and get the best players around

The praise Bayern get for being well run is overblown. As the piece sets out, they have huge financial backing from the likes of Allianz, Adidas and T-Mobile which has done so much to put them in their dominant position in spite of the 50+1 rule. It's objectively bad for the league, and it's tragic because otherwise the Bundesliga is fantastic.

As an American, I find the structure of international football to be fascinating. No revenue sharing, no salary cap, no draft, etc. Basically there is no route for inferior teams to change their situation. You just have to understand that you'll never win before you start. It's the equivalent to the Los Angeles Lakers winning the NBA title every single season because The Lakers have a huge resource advantage and there is no draft so bad teams never get better. Frankly, doesn't seem like much fun. Even if you're a Lakers fan you would understand that you're only winning because you have more money.

@GIBBO4182
@GIBBO4182 Жыл бұрын
A lot of what you said does make sense…but in American sports, you actually get better rewards, in terms of draft capital, the worse you do! Which also isn’t ideal, you get teams deliberately doing bad, to get a better draft pick. And the Yankees spend the most, and win the most…so it doesn’t end the “spend to win” model. The thing about American sports is, when they do get a good player/team your system is much better designed to be able to *keep* them, that is the biggest difference. Which can also be detrimental to the player…it’s a fine balance, players have too much power in Europe, where as franchises do in America

@@GIBBO4182 I'd say every rule change in the past 30 years or so had been designed to aid the top clubs. It's nearly impossible for smaller clubs to keep hold of top players to allow them to challenge, so even a draft wouldn't work. The top sides make that worse by snapping up all the promising young players and dumping them in their youth/U23 set-ups, whereas before they'd have been playing 1st team football elsewhere.

This is false. Bayern have huge advantages over other German clubs due to their entrenched position. They have a far larger budget than the other clubs so even if they were only run just about as well as other clubs they'd be expected to win, just like they have been doing.
