It always erked the fuck out of me in the anime. They literally give you all three starters in the two first seasons and I understand the whole "it's up to them" thing but it's just absolute wasted potential and becomes tiresome after awhile too. You can say it's the power of friendship all you want but facts are facts. Your non evolved mons are shit compared to their fully evolved forms and the only reason you manage to win at all is plot armor

Can you please take this Pokémon to keep it safe?" before giving you the Shuckle, and the next time you see the rival after that is when he first has his Sneasel, which is also way too low level to have come from Mt. Silver, so either he bred it from a Sneasel he got elsewhere (which why would he do that) or more likely that's the Pokémon that was stolen from the Shuckle guy.

I cheated and used PK Hex. I couldn’t wait until I got to Ecrutreak because I had to use them in gym battles before then, so I just imported the whole box of Pokémon.

To be honest, I actually wish that Pokemon Crystal incorporated anime events into the games in the same manner as Yellow. For instance, have Kris/Gold start off with a Pikachu that follows you and make all of the Johto starters available in the same routes/towns Ash got them in the anime. Also, update the wild pokemon/gym leader`s pokemon to match the anime.

If you have the games physically, you can just use a game link cable and two game boys. If you have them as Roms, you can use the PKHex program to export Pokémon from gen 1, and import them into a gen 2.
