Hey Linus! Former car detailing guy here, I nerded out about it when I was doing it for work and wound up with a big supply of some different waxes, sealants, etc.... over the years I have used these products on various phones to minimize scratches and partially restore some dinged up units.... The results were varying, but one thing that I absolutely learned was that you should, generally, NOT DO THIS TO GLASS SCREEN DEVICES. The primary reason why is that most/all of these types of products include solvents and/or polishing agents that will, most likely depending on the products, strip the anti-grease layer off of the phone's display.... This means fingerprints. lots of fingerprints. if it doesn't do this it will not have the same anti-grease performance, and I think just adds more layers of material with different refraction indexes, and makes the grease show up more easily. My phones definitely cleaned up easier, and looked better than they did to begin with. The other concern I would have is that these products generally recommend gloves and avoiding skin contact, like you clearly realize given you wore gloves to apply it.... after a few bad reactions to exposure to various chemicals over the years as well (these not included, I think*) I'm also just more careful with stuff like that than I once was.... these products shouldn't be applied to something that you handle so thoroughly and so often as your phone. Fridges, shiny surfaces you *dont* habitually touch sure, but the phone just seems like a bad idea to me.

I own a business professionally paint correcting and ceramic coating high end vehicles, and there is a lot of misinformation out there. Ceramic is not a filler, that’s why in an automotive setting, you have to polish or “level” the clear coat so you’re applying ceramic over a near flawless surface, or as close to perfection as you can achieve. Ceramic essentially seals in the work underneath, so if you apply ceramic over paint without decontamination or correction, it will be hydrophobic, however there will still be flaws and blemishes underneath. If you want a filler, PPF, also known as clear bra, acts as a filler for minor swirls and scratches however rock chips and deeper scratches will still be visible. Also the misconception that you’ll never have to wash your car again is false. It’ll make cleaning much easier and it is far more durable and hydrophobic than any traditional waxes or sealants out there, but you still have to wash your car. There is a lot to this that I can’t even begin to explain in a single comment, but this video is full of false information. People only think it’s snake oil because they believe the propaganda and marketing ploys pushed on them instead of seeking a professional opinion or doing their own research!

yep, Linus rushing things instead of doing it the right way, forming opinions on products that he is too careless to follow the directions on. Methodology matters when you are testing a product. It may have performed the same, but we wouldn't know. If Linus never saw basketball before, went to a hoop without a net, he might assume you throw it throw the hoop and try to hit the square on the backboard, because directions don't mean anything :p I mean, I've never played badminton, I just assume you are supposed to catch the birdie with your racket and try to throw it at the opposing side's face. You get different points for hitting different parts, the nose is a bullseye, eyes are a penalty ... if they catch it, just means its their serve.

I have AvalonKing ceramic coating on a couple of cars and it's a night-and-day difference how it performs. The car actually gets cleaner if you leave it out in the rain for a little while because the water beads just carry the dirt away. The dirt doesn't stick very strongly to the surface. That's great because it means less car washes and you're scratching the paint less because you're scrubbing it less often. Continues performing like that for years, it's phenomenal stuff.

Linus you should test it on a phone that has its oleophobic coating worn off. Then compare ceramic coating to reapplying oleophobic coating.

These coatings primarily help prevent scratches by making it harder for dirt that can cause scratches form sticking to your car. Dirt that's stuck to your car has a chance to scratch it however dirt that beads off with water does not have that chance. Basically reduces scratches by reducing the chance something will stick to the car long enough to scratch it.

Yes, drops of water flow more "quickly" off the edge of a surface when they are closer to the edge than another set of drops. What a good idea to test that.
@Gomjokk4 жыл бұрын
Another way he could have tested was to apply a couple drops of water on each side and measure the waters contact angle to the surface, you would immediatly see that the water is more "round" coming off the surface on the coated part

That tampered glass is really flat (just like other glass), it didn't have many pores for the coating to sit.. It didn't meant to coat a glass, it's to coat PAINT.. At least test it on plastic back phone, or even better a FOLDABLE SCREEN.. (Of course I highly doubt it'll work, I also doubt it'll protect car paint 😑)
@antonvandermerwe98522 жыл бұрын
Your test compares the ceramic coating with a new oleophobic coating. If you do the test with a old phone where the oleophobic coating has been worn off, you will get a big difference

Now that youve scratched the phone pretty significantly will you please now do a video showing how noticeable the scratches are after you polish or apply the car treatment to the screen. I am interested in using this product for a few reasons including 1 - to remove noticeable scratches from my screen 2 - to repair DVDs/CDs in my collection and 3 - to repair scratches to my laptop monitors. I really hope this gets your attention and well done on the quality of the presentation.

You can see the difference in contact angle of the water with the phone in the very first test suggesting that the ceramic coating further improves on the hydrophobic coating that is already on the phone. Contact angle reveals everything. Look near the point of the edge of the drop and the glass

There's this stuff called edci and it's this green spray you use to coat carbon steel blades in order to protect it from corrosion, it's food safe and also leaves a thinner than thin film on whatever you spray it on, I used it alot on my watches to stop fingerprints on the crystal, might be worth a go

Ceramic Coatings are a great alternative to wax, it’s usually good up for 5 years. Very noticeable on black or dark color cars. Very awesome especially against dust and fingerprint smudges. Idk about a smartphone but glossy tech of any kind could use this.
