I just wanted to hop back onto this video to say that I ended up buying the GW2 and I LOVE it! It's an incredible deal if you ask me. I also contacted Eart's customer support via email to request an extra magnetic tuning tool in case I lose the one I have, and they had no problem helping me with that. My biggest gripe with it is changing the high E string, it tends to slip a lot and can be a real pain in the ass, although changing all of the other strings is a breeze. I think it was a great intro to headless guitars so I can get a feel for the before jumping into getting a Strandberg.

Thanks for producing and publishing this video - 25 minutes of dedicated, focused/concise content that remains engaging and relevant for many viewers isn't trivial and takes time and effort to maintain production values (even if you have your process nailed). IIRC Ola Strandberg has a patent(s) on the "trapezoidal" neck design; it's a pretty critical detail, but for someone who is trying to get a more ergo instrument (especially those putting in long hours) it's still an improvement on your standard/traditional strat/LP style. Many people simply don't like the unique neck profile of Strandbergs so this actually might be better than a Strandberg for them - even taking it to a shop for upgrades/tweaking, you'll still pocket some cash in the difference; might break the access barrier to ergo styles for someone who is playing a lot but isn't making enough for a Strandberg or other more boutique-type of instrument.

great vid as always. the guitar you show at the very end brought to mind a concern i always have when deciding whether or not to pull the trigger on an affordable strandberg-inspired model- taking more and more material away from the bottom of the guitar in the bridge area, making the guitar sit further and further back on your leg, potentially making it even more difficult to play due to fatigue and whatnot. I don't have any shops in the area that carry models like this to try out, so lately I've been finding and 3d printing guitar models to test their fit before making the decision.

It's good to see a thorough and detailed look at the bridge and string lock system on the GW2 Pro, but I kind of wish you had looked at the regular, non-Pro, GW2. It has a different bridge and head system that seems to work a lot better. I got one about a week ago and haven't had any problems at all with re-stringing or tuning stability. And it's less expensive than the Pro by a decent amount. It's not perfect, of course. It has the same pickups, so still some muddiness to either put up with or replace them. Same problem with some slightly uneven frets. On mine, it showed up with the neck so back-bowed that the strings were nearly touching the first few frets. After straightening the neck though, it feels great and the uneven frets aren't bad enough to cause any buzz. Even with some of those same drawbacks to take into account, I feel like the regular, non-pro, GW2 is definitely the better version. I did see that other headless you showed at the end while I was looking on Amazon, but reviews didn't seem to offer as much info and I hadn't seen any videos of it on youtube, so I'll be very curious to see your video on it next week.

I'm not even a guitarist, but I really enjoy the format and all of the little details you spend time on. I also appreciate the anecdote about not being the kind of person with the interest in repair/maintenance, cause that's something a lot of people don't seem to understand. As a mechanic's son, people have assumed I'd like to tinker. I don't; I like to create. The tools should just work and get out of the way for me at least.

Max Guitar did a video on the Latitude Cardinal and he seemed pretty happy with it. $350, same fret job but with a different bridge. Similar to the one on the guitar you tease at the end. You've hit the nail on the head with this one. Sometimes if you buy cheap, with the idea that you can upgrade it and may need to do some running repairs or maintenance - you may as well have bought the expensive one in the first place. (New or used) This applies to a guitars, cars, whatever. Of course - all thrown out the window if your hobby is to tinker. I think that's what has held me back from exploring headless guitars - only Strandberg seems to have perfected the hardware (maybe not so much the string locks) and the budget versions all seem to have compromises that would annoy me. Much more options for better tuners, bridges and other parts for traditional electric guitars.

I agree. I want a headless ergonomic guitar to try but Strandberg is too expensive for me for being made in Indonesia. (Same with certain PRS SE) but anything below $1000 has issues and it’s not common hardware so it’s difficult to just swap out for better like a Strat, Tele or even Les Paul.

Cool review. Side note, you are not alone in the volume knob club. Depending on its placement ill constantly turn it down unintentionally when strumming or alt picking on higher strings. For me it's on my ibanez

Great review, you really break down what you should expect at each price point. Fret finishing aside, headless design is way more complicated than a typical guitar, so it's interesting to see what the trade-offs have been. Can also see the production quality get better with every video. Can't wait for the next one!

Another great review from the doctor. I bought a eart gw2 And it turned out to be a great guitar. So I bought a Earth GW2 pro For a Christmas present to myself. After receiving the guitar I was very disappointed when trying to change the strings. The doctor was spot on in his analysis. The string anchoring system at the top of the neck is just bad. I've had a lot of headless guitars And the great thing about them is how quick you can change a string like on a Stienbuger. There is another problem with this guitand that's the briwhen you lower the saddle to get a better play action it decreases the angle between the string anchor and the saddle. Without significant angle between these 2 points there is not enough down force on the saddle this cause is the string to have a citar like sound as it is bouncing on and off of the saddle cause there's not enough force to hold it down. I had to print a shim on my 3-D printer to angle the neck back so I could raise the saddle and increase the angle between the 2 points. This was a big headache. In comparison the GW2 non-pro Is much better and only cost $360. The pro does not stay in tune that well because of the slight twisting of the string anchor at the bridge. Quite disappointing because overall the neck the body and the build is very good for the money. The nonpro definitely has better hardware. I think the pickups are the same involved which is also a disappointment because I figured the pro would have better pick UPS but they seem to be exactly the same if anyone knows differently please comment and I would appreciate it. I don't think that the pro is a total loss cause for someone who likes to mide gucharles but I don't think I would recommend it. Once again the doctor is so good at his review and guitars he hit every point that was bothering me about this guitar. Good work doctor. I wish you could review AGW2 non pro but I'm sure you won't waste your time with it but they are a better guitar than the pro. Thanks to all who read this Far.

I've got an Eart and the muddy sound was something I noticed as well. It's the circuitry, low quality pots and wires, not to mention the fact that it isn't shielded. If you don't mind completely redoing all of the circuitry and shielding it's sounds amazing. But the pick ups are literally the only thing I would keep.

Steinberger solved the headstock issue years ago with the combo headpiece on the Synapse line. Perfect. It allows you to use both double-ball or normal strings (or both). Seems like Corona offers something similar.

Mine strings up with the ball ends up where the headstock would be. Tuning mine uses the magnetic crank on the bridge. Same body style different bridge.

When you pulled out the Grote I was very surprised. I have that exact model and have a bit of a love hate relationship with it. But once I fix everything wrong with it I'm sure I'll love it. My guitar came with a terribly not flat fret board. I convinced the seller to send me a new neck and will be fitting it soon. I also replaced all the electronics as they are very low quality. Personally I think the fret board (mine has 'high pressure laminate') is the best material as it is very hard, smooth and super low friction. Looking forward to seeing your review, regardless of if you think the guitar is good or bad.

This is a great breakdown of the instrument. One aspect of headless instruments that really keeps me away is the lack of hardware options. With each company using proprietary parts you might be sol if you have a hardware issue.

I had the all the same questions and had intended on modding it up to a stranberg level instrument and doing my own Final fantasy cactuar themed paintjob but i had no experience with how these should feel or balance this is a great primer on a mod series for these guitars

Nice review Andre!, and much appreciated. This explains the mixed reviews I've seen online, and the price drop from $600. Although for those ruling Eart's headless guitars out based on the GW2 Pro, should re-consider! The normal GW2 ($370) (which I own) has an entirely different string lock/bridge combo which is far less of a hassle, no play in the components, and great tuning stability (from my experience). Although tuning takes a bit longer compared to Strandbergs design, as it requires a crank tool for tuning with the most efficiency (which is magnetically stored within the side of the bridge). All I did was swap the pickups out, and it's been rock solid! The neck feels and plays fantastic. I did discover a couple (very slight) high frets with a fret rocker, but still have the action down to where I want with no issues. Also the ball-end stainless steel frets are on another level compared to all of my other guitars.

@@andrefludd The $70 Chinese bridge is pretty clever. It's the same bridge on the Grote you're reviewing next. It's not perfect, nor Strandberg quality, but adjusting the intonation and actions feels so smooth and truly compliments a modern designed guitar. I'm a big fan of the bridge; however I feel the magnet holding the crank tool in place is too strong. You either need a super strong grip, and/or not have sweaty fingertips, lol.

After stumbling upon your Strandberg reviews I started to really want a guitar with a shape like that again and found these Earts. Luckily one non-pro model was in one of local guitar shops (it's a small city so that's pretty surprising) and I had a chance to try it out. That was much better than my strat in terms of comfort and by a long shot. Not quite enough to buy it in the spot tho. The thing is almost double the global price in my country, oh well. It costs a tiny bit more then the pro model on Amazon for example. Would LOVE to see you cover more budget guitars with all of that hi-end experience. And the meeter is a really nice touch. Appreciate what you do here a lot

Btw, the hardware on that thing is pretty interesting. Its inverse of what is typical on headless guitars and you basically have normal tuners on the bridge. That comes with a drawback - it's really tough to tune by hand, but there is a tool for that stored right in the bridge with magnets. Neat!

I have 2 of the older models of the Eart headless that look identical to a Strandberg Boden (I'm sure they got a cease and desist letter from Strandberg hence the new telecaster body style} and I had to do fret leveling on both of them. The fixed bridge version is not bad but the floating bridge model was useless. I had to lock the floating bridge because every time I touched the trem bar I had to retune every string.

My headless is an older hohner Steinberger licensed design so it uses the double ball end system, the headpiece is pretty much invisible and the strings don't poke you, the double ball system the strings are expensive but it's the easiest fastest string change I've ever experienced, plus it was pretty much instantly in tune once the strings were tightened up. I don't know why all the other headless guitars out there don't use these strings ,it would drive the price of the strings down if they weren't exclusive to the Steinberger system for guitars that really aren't made anymore, I think they still make the Steinberger spirit guitars which are inexpensive. I would love to get one of the original composite body Steinberger guitars or a Klein guitar one of these days. If you do an experiment with another headless in the future you should try to find something with the double ball end strings. Currently I have been looking at the Ormsby headless guitars. They have their own system but it doesn't seem as unwieldy looking as the strandberg , I've played the Ormsby but I haven't had the opportunity to play the strandberg yet.

Eart used to sell a tremolo model, too. However, I don't know why, but they discontinued selling the tremolo headless guitar model, so if a person has to have a trem, the Eart hardtail is out. Now there is this company called Bootlegger that makes a headless guitar with a trem...it has EMG's on it, comes with a case, but I haven't played one, just seen it online, and have only seen videos from Bootlegger on it...anyway, thanks for the video; hope you and yours are well!

18:20 just a thought. have you tried adjusting the presence knob? the thing that helps with bringing in extra highend and acts almost like a low pass filter knob. this isnt to be rude I just feel as if making a tone that brings out that high end and not just using the 3 band EQ of bass, mids, and treble. hope this gets to you to see if this fixes that issue

On the topic of cheap pickups, I've found that the Fleor humbucker pickups on amazon and ebay are actually really good for the price. Neck is nice and clear and if you get the hot bridge, it has a good amount of grunt to it. I'd recommend those as a good cheap upgrade to that guitar. On the topic of modding. I got into modding and eventually building because I couldn't afford super nice guitars. I've tracked my material cost and I think the most I've spent to get a cheap guitar and upgrade it was maybe $500 max and thats buying a $200 guitar and upgrading it with affordable but good parts.

i bought an eart guitar, is a basic guitar but good looking, the frets are perfect stainless steel, i was very lucky because i saw some bad fretwork, the only part i didnt like is the bridge, it was a trem but not floating so i modified it and some tuners are very hard to rotate. for 300€ is the best headless with a very cool looking wood i could find but i also have some experience in setup and mod.

Hipshot headless bridge with graphtech string savers is best in my opinion. I never change strings, so the head piece is not an issue for me.

Nice vid! Would really like to know what's your opinion on the standard GW2 model if you ever get your hands on one. I own one and I gotta say I'm really digging it. Andre, one thing you need to know is that there are different hardnesses of stainless steel, some being very soft! I have a guitar with those typical ball end stainless steel frets and when I leveled the frets they actually were softer than typical nickel frets. But they can say they have stainless steel frets even though they are made from very soft grade stainless steel.

You may want to consider Bootlegger Guitar; they make a headless model called the Absinthe, US $999.00 24-fret, 5- piece neck, graphite nut, ebony fretboard, EMG HSH passive pickups, coil split, 5-way switch, trem. Also includes a hard case. edit: they also make a smaller body version with different scale lengths and pickups, called the Spade.

I'm considering another headless that looks interesting: chambered aluminum body, carbon fiber / composite neck and fretboard, trem...it's number 2 on my list, after a new Marshall 100W tube head. S. - I just spent about twenty minutes worrying that an errant ludicrously long string was going to whip around and poke you in the eye. Aside: I hope so... since, like many other industries, many products in the music industry are a scam in that the consumer price is ludicrously higher than the cost of manufacture. It's not like you're purchasing an instrument lovingly handcrafted by a master of the craft. Say, guitars - the specs and quality of many instruments being sold for under $200 can (and do) rival those of instruments costing thousands. The only issue is questionable quality control (which you also can get on guitars costing thousands). That typed, if you do any needed setup work yourself - or even pay for a luthier - they're still a value... and you end up with a superior instrument for less. If it's an instrument you like - that you feel a connection to - all the better. That's what matters. Instruments are meant to be played. This typed, as these instruments become sought after, odds are the companies will go the same route as others. They'll price themselves out of the market. You see it happening now with Firefly and IYV.

Nice video... I own 4 Earts, 2 of them headless. (I put P-90s in one of them) It really looks like quality has dropped from the first generation Earts. The muddy tone is bad wiring and cheap pots. I have both trem and hardtail and the bridges aren't great, but nowhere near the issues you're experiencing. They mostly lack in the ability to dial in a setup. Both bridges can be found on Amazon for replacement. Sounds like they're not the deal they once were. (I got both of mine for $289)

I have 4 Eart guitars and all of them are amazing and yes these are amazing mod platforms. They may have some minor flaws but honestly I have had less problems out of the box with these than any Fender or Gibson I've owned. I have the Les Paul with Gibson headstock and binding and it plays and sounds as well as my friends $4000 Les Paul Custom. The Strat version is a Suhr copy of sorts and has become my favorite guitar right now next to my PRS S2. Tell me another company that gives you a guitar with stainless steel frets, bone nut, trem system that smokes Fender's with a huge block, roasted maple neck, and a roasted mahogany body all for 1/3 of the price? Don't be afraid to buy these guys because unlike Fender or Gibson these guys stand behind their products. If you have any issues they are more than happy to rectify them. Now lets be realistic about what you get and even if you have to spend another $100 or $200 to get them perfect they are very much worth it in my opinion. You can't find a neck with SS frets for the price of their guitars so there is tremendous value here.

With headless guitars, certainly one of the most important construction factors is the choice and implementation of its headless piece. Why on earth engineer something so complicated that it works about as efficiently as a submarine with screen doors? What a nightmare. Another example of paying less and getting less. Hot Dog'd frets are awesome as long as the fret heights don't resemble tumbling dominos. Another sign of cost cutting. It seems like these import jobbers put the money into the woods and whatever budget is left over, that's what goes into the hardware and set up. Another great review Andre. Few, if anyone, are out there doing such insightful reviews. Keep it up!

I know it’s late, but eart makes a cheaper model that has a much better bridge system. Andre has the pro version, the regular one is made out of padauke with a burl veneer so it’ll be a bit heavier than the ash one Andre has, but it’s a concession I would be willing to make for a better bridge and at a cheaper cost. Try clipping the string before you put it in the locking mechanism the same way you would on standard locking tuners

I have an eart headless .. the frets are polished and ends rounded before inserted. My copy also has my fret rocker doing a tap dance all the way up and down the neck..it's because The frets are not completely seated.. maybe move during shipment from China? however I am able to get action 1.25 mm without fret buzz.. ..the pickups are ok... But the pots are cheap.. changing them will sound a lot better and have better control of sweep.

Try NK headless guitars. Other than the stock pickups being the weakest point, the rest are top notch, especially the fret works and neck profile.

I own a couple budget headless guitars. My favorite of them is my NK which I waited a month for. With expensive guitars I feel extremely nervous about modding them myself. With cheaper ones I am way more adventurous. Here is where cheap headless guitars cheap out. Small crews, electronics including pickups, strings. I found some screws on amazon that were the same size and threading and replaced most of the screws. The main issue with these guitars is the quality control. However, if you do get a good one, then they are way better than their price. To expect them to be +$1000 level though is unfair. I wouldnt sell my NK for anything less than $800 and I bought it for about $430. All I did was change one pot and the pickups which I did myself since I already have all the tools. These budget headless unmodded should be compared to guitars in their price range. There is no free lunch unfortunately.

I have a Parker P-44 and an Eart GW-2. Like them both, though the Eart cost half of what the P-44 cost. Yeah, the tuning needs to be tweaked more than I'd like, but that's true for most of my guitars. Not a big deal. I like the proportions of the guitar, and my only real complaint a year after purchase is the electronics. I'd about ready to replace the stock pickups with something from Seymour Duncan or DiMarzio.

You ever see those NK guitars. Kinda a strandberg rip-off when they first started. But the idea is the same basically also has their version of an endure neck. I just got mine and really enjoying it.
