Returning to the sacraments, confession in particular, uprooted yoga from my life. I was a practitioner of 26 years and instructor for 12. You cannot separate yoga from the meaning, intention, and worship that is inherent in it. It still amazes me how quickly it was that it became intolerable to me after the sacraments made their return to my life. Déo Gratias.

Great discussion! I was also practicing yoga for a long time while I was away from the Catholic Church. By the grace of God, He brought me back home and showed me the dangers of yoga and all New Age practices. My concern is not only for all those knowingly or unknowingly using yoga for exercise, but more for priests and religious who have fallen into this trap. I think we need to pray for their souls! One priest I knew would greet his congregation by saying 'Namaste' just before the start of our Catholic celebration. It would disturb me so much! I prayed many rosaries for this priest, and even confronted him once in writing about how offensive it was to use that word in celebration of our Lord. Namaste is Sanskrit, Hindu, for saying the divinity in me bows to the divinity in you... remember, they believe in MANY deities. After that, I was scolded by our pastor for wearing my veil to Mass and was ordered to remove it. I never went back. Eventually I found the Traditional Latin Mass, and I thank God every day! Please pray for our priests.🙏

there are some yoga postures that are not intrinsic to yoga. e.g In yoga, a push-up is known as Chaturanga Dandasana. When I do push ups I am NOT doing yoga. Stretching is really beneficial to our health, and I think most people are doing the stretches to improve their posture or to stop back pain, etc... Rather than just saying that yoga is bad, I think it would be more helpful to give Catholics an ALTERNATIVE stretching program that offers the same health benefits, but which is not invoking pagan demons.

I took yoga classes for many years and it helped me immensely with upper back pain from tension/stress. I never used it as a spiritual practice and if there were chants, I would chant Jesus's name. I no longer take classes, but I utilize some of the stretches to help relieve "old age" pains, as well as a shoulder impingement. I do not chant, nor do I partake of any exotic positions. I listen to Mother Angelica pray the Rosary and the St Michael Prayer, and I play Gregorian chants by Benedictine monks, while I am stretching. I am a full-fledged, practicing Catholic whose Faith, Hope, and Charity has continued to grow over the years. So I think the stretching pieces I've adopted as a means of keeping my body moving and with less pain is ok.

My guess is that it's okay, or at least depending on the martial art. I'm a black belt in Judo (I haven't practiced in a few years due to family obligations, but I'd like to go back). We never did anything that seemed wrong. The closest to something "spiritual" was the bow to your sensei and to your opponent/practice mate, but that's more akin to a respectful handshake in Japanese culture. The names of the throws were in Japanese, but they all mean some description of the throw (e.g., "wide outer reap", or "shoulder wheel"). The movements and positions were all practical, optimizing the throw, pin or choke. There are some principles such as "mutual benefit" with your training partner, and using your opponents strength instead of your own to do the throws, but to me that always sounded like principles of proper technique and good sportsmanship. That being said, I would ask a priest before going back or getting my kids into it.

No! yoga is suggested as a wonderful way to keep supple and to stretch the body - it is punted as an exercise…..yet, yoga is a Hindu Spiritual practice, any way you slice or dice it. The asanas (poses) and pranayama (breath exercises) - all designed for the raising of the Kundalini (the Serpent God) - and each asana connects you to a particular Hindu deity - for enlightment and self-actualisation. Therefore, as can be seen, yoga is not stretching, nor is its goal exercise. Most people who teach yoga have New Age beliefs or are open to them. There is no such thing as “Christian Yoga”. That is an oxymoron, because being Christian means we believe in the One True God and yoga - being a Hindu Spiritual practice means we are then worshipping the Hindu Gods and breaking the First Commandment!

Mainly from my body tightening up. So I asked my priest. Is yoga evil. He said simply, God made everything first. If evil took it and made it evil then that’s what it is. If you are doing 90 minutes of stretching and not chanting or humming. Which we never did in Bikram anyway. You are not practicing yoga per se. Sometimes we Catholics over analyze things. Discernment is important. Decide for yourself. But I personally have reversed my pains by doing 10 mins of “stretching” every morning.

A yoga stretch is as related to Hinduism as jujutsu is to Buddhism. Should we therefore give up BJJ? From Wiki : "Budō (武道) is a Japanese term describing modern Japanese martial arts.[1][2][3] Literally translated it means the "Martial Way", and may be thought of as the "Way of War" or the "Way of Martial Arts". Etymology Budō is a compound of the root bu (武:ぶ), meaning "war" or "martial"; and dō (道:どう; dào in Chinese), incorporating the character above for head and below for foot, meaning the unification of mind and body "path" or "way"[4] (including the ancient Indic Dharmic and Buddhist conception of "path", or mārga in Sanskrit[5])"

There is a system of exercises called Callanetics, which I came across in the 1980's. It was developed by a Texas woman called Callan Pickney. I think you can still buy books and DVD's about it. It seems to have similarities to pilates and t'ai chi but no equipment is needed and you dont have to get yourself into almost anatomically impossible positions like some yoga poses. I think it is good for activating deep muscles and reshaping your body to be attractively trim and limber.

@scoundrelearth I'm not a priest or a theologian, but I don't remember any strange or exotic philosophy or aspects of non-Christian religion behind it. From what I can remember, it was purely about exercising muscles and getting into positions to activate deep muscles to tone up and strengthen the body. Looking at what I wrote previously, I think I misspelt the originator's surname. (Maybe Pinckney, not Pickney?) No bodily position is intrinsically sinful. To believe so, is to border upon Manicheanism. Sin relies upon action, intent and situation. If the intention is health, the action is a non-intrinsically sinful human posture and the situation is one's home, no sin - even of a venial nature - has occurred. Traditionalists being superstitious about these things do not help our cause.

I have heard folks who call Harry Potter evil also call Lord of the Rings a Catholic novel. Yet both stories have good & bad wizards and tons of magic. Likewise The Wizard of Oz, The Chronicles of Narnia, Alice in Wonderland and others. Why do they beat up poor Harry?
@revelation12_16 ай бұрын
Harry Potter contains actual spells directly from witchcraft.
@JohnAlbertRigali6 ай бұрын
In Tolkien’s Middle Earth milieu, the wielding of magic isn’t a talent that can be learned. Middle Earth wizards are low-level quasi-divine beings with innate magic-wielding ability who happen to have human-like bodies. They don’t speak magical invocations like J.K. Rowling’s wizards do. In Baum’s Oz milieu, the witches seem to be similar in concept to Middle Earth wizards. In Lewis’ Narnia milieu, isn’t the Winter Witch the only wizard? And she might also be similar in concept. I forget what magic-wielders there are in Carroll’s Wonderland milieu, but they probably are also similar in concept.

@@revelation12_1 Yes, the use of incense is Biblical, but it is also pagan. Chinese used it thousands of years before Christ, and it is continued to be used widely throughout world religions today. I do have a question. Past few months I'm thinking about it more and more. As an athlete I do many stretches, I do it for warm-ups and flexibility purpose. I don't even know where they come from. I recently realized that many of them are also in yoga ( I have never attended yoga session). So what should catholic athletes do? If you are working with your body to enhance your sport performance, you definitively end up with some stretch and breathing procedures that can appear in yoga.. Because they are following physiological and anatomical matter... I still don't know, why it should be evil itself. Like boy breathing, or stretching for your hamstring.. God gives us bodies, they are working in some particular way, based on physiology. Why we can't use them properly? Why it should be a sin? I am not going to yoga classes, but I definitevely want to sport and be healthy all around. There are million of yoga positions or breathing methods, chance that I do some stuff which appear also in yoga is almost inevitable.

Not an expert, just an old lady who's always struggled . Basically, if your sports interferes with your relationship with God the Father Almighty, the stretches may well be an issue. If you "can't" go to Mass because of a competition, it is an issue. If you don't have time to pray daily because of sports practice it is an issue. BUT if you are going to classes called yoga, who use all the names of the prayer position it's absolutely an insult to God and opens the path for demons.

The Babylon Bee posted a story some time ago about a plumber who became possessed because he accidentally crouched under the sink in a yoga pose -- it was poking fun at the notion that merely doing yoga poses with no connection to or intention of invoking the spiritual aspects somehow invites demonic influence. I totally understand not getting involved in the religious/philosophical aspects of yoga but I really have a problem with this notion that just doing the poses is bad. Also, I have read that what Westerners think of as yoga exercises are NOT of Hindu origin -- they were introduced to India by some British guy in the 19th century!
