As asmon pointed out, you still have to be able to interpret the code and provide feedback to chatGPT using technical jargon and point out object class names, attributes, functions and variables that it needs to fix in order to really get the most out of it as a dev. So basically devs are now just going to become chatGPT's code interpreters while writing minimal amounts of code. I also use chatGPT when implementing features that especially require complex solutions and read through the solutions once it spits it out to me. It's basically like using StackOverflow but much faster and with more accuracy and precision.

@@choysum Not really. Coding requires context and debugging, as well as solutions to edge cases. Yes, AI can write code for you, but you will still need to analyze the code, understand it, and provide it relevant feedback. ChatGPT relieves the developer from problem solving by coming up with solutions and algorithms, but telling an AI to write up an entire source code for an app or program without human supervision over the code will result in bugs and unhandled edge cases. This will be true 5 or 10 years later as well. Devs don't just code, they analyze, refactor, debug and handle edge cases. With or without chatGPT's help.

I've used ChatGPT to generate scripts for Tabletop Simulator and I'm a total noob in Lua. The issue with GPT, however, is that it doesn't follow a standard method when writing code, and it may forget snippets of it, so you have to monitor it constantly.

I can see both sides to this. 1) This could potentially lead to situations where programmers stop learning in-depth code because there's no need for it when the machine can most of the legwork for you. (Alternatively, in-depth code might remain useful because it streamlines your interactions with the AI. It understands you and you understand it, and both can reach a solution faster.) 2) The time you would have otherwise spent writting code can now be allocated to other areas of development. People keep spouting pessimistic jargon about how AI is going to replace X or Y... I'd rather focus on the potential benefits - an helpful assistant that can cut down development / work time by doing the boring stuff and letting people focus on the better / creative aspects of that job. Just because you're a programmer doesn't mean you're getting replaced, it just means your job will be easier in a sense.

The only problem with this is if the company is a start-up and they don't have a contract to openAI. Then openAi can use the code that chatGPT wrote for themselves. If it's proprietary code. You probably shouldn't let chatGPT see it.

You'll need more in-depth coding knowledge, not less, because you'll need to supervise the output. A professional software dev spends very little time writing code and most of it is spent thinking about system design, what tools to use and why, tracking down bugs and integration/testing. If nobody had any coding knowledge anymore, you'd have no idea if what this magic box spits out is correct or doing what you want; it may have vulnerabilities that are obvious if you know what you're doing and not at all obvious if you don't. Besides that, there are many sectors that wont want OpenAI to have access to their proprietary software, and wont want potential leaks of sensitive systems like defence, medical, financial, etc.

Midjourney V5 still gets hands wrong occasionally but more often than not you're right, hands are right next to being 100% consistently correct. Even when it gets it wrong it's usually just one digit extra or minus and the general shape and geometry of the hand is still correct looking. It's so close I wouldn't be surprised if they reached 100% hand consistency with the next V5 style update or so instead of having to wait until V6.

This is kinda a good thing, imo. now all the hard work can be done by ai and all the things that give life to the game people can fine tune it for people to enjoy. You'll still need coding, but it won't be so labour intensive for people.

Even if it takes a while to be able to code complicated games from an in-depth design specification, you could probably do it like this, step by step, walking it through what you want and making revisions. You don't necessarily need to do it all with natural language interpretation either, something like simplified pseudo-code or markup text could be used. What this probably will be amazing at is bug fixing. Something like "there's a problem with hit detection when using X item in X level, can you please analyse this code and write a fix for me?"

As an Indie developer, who enjoys Design far more then Programming (I do know how to program, I just dislike it). This is actually super useful, the code isn't going to be top of the line, but it works, and works well enough to create fun, simple games (like flappy bird) or even help with HTML in order to streamline creation, so I can focus on the Design elements. The only issue here is... if this technology continues to get better and better, will Programmers be out of a job? Like right now, it is able to do simple things right... but what if it is able to do complex coding, just needing a Human to prompt it. Basically, only needing Design Engineers or UX Designer's, completely removing Software Engineers? That would be insane.

Wont happen because there are lots of industries where you don't want to give all of your data to a third party AI company. Look at the leaks out of companies like Samsung. A country wont trust its national defence/space/banking/medical/welfare tasks to an AI with no supervision, if at all.

It’s crazy how GPT is supposed to just be a language model that predicts the next word in a sentence, yet it has this ability. I guess one could argue that programming languages are still languages, and it’s interpreting his very well constructed prompts in English and translating it into a coding language. But learning and speaking a language seems like such a different skill set compared to coding.

I dont think it is doing any translating. Its still a text generator. The code it produces is simply the most likely code that fits the needs based on solutions all over the Internet. Thats why it has mistakes in it. But its a great tool as long as you know how to spot the mistakes and then ask the AI to correct it.

For people who are actually programmers, the trick behind the video becomes clear once you start pausing to read the prompt he sends to ChatGPT. A lot of that "really complicated jargon" looks a lot like a human being reading actual code out loud for another human being. At that point, ChatGPT isn't actually interpreting a task description, it's compiling human language into computer language. When you say "I want a constant A that relates to B" it just means to write down a multiplication, "A * B". Note how he had to provide a full detailed description of what happens on the "game over" screen. Also, he had to literally point out exactly what the high score bug was. So far, every example I've seen of making ChatGPT write code, feels like trying to guide an intern to write the code you want, and the best the intern can do for you, is copy code from StackOverflow or Wikipedia.
