Hi Physics Ninja, I've been toying with ChatGPT lately and had it try to solve a kinamatics problem that's been haunting me for years, because Pythagora's theorem brings in some complicated expressions. Couldn't have ChatGPT nail correctly the assumptions that a normal human being could do easily. Here's the short version of the problem: A man crosses a bridge over a pit with his car at constant speed (let's say 20m/s), he drops a stone and after some time (let's say 5 seconds) he hears the stone hitting the bottom. Ignoring air resistance and considering speed of sound in standard air, how deep is the pit? For ChatGPT I had to put some more clarifications, as often the AI misses the initial horizontal speed of the stone, doesn't consider the car moves along the bridge by the time the sound reaches the car etc... So here's my longer version, still ChatGPT4 messes it up every time: A man crosses a long bridge over a pit with his a car, he moves in a straight horizontal line at 20 m/s. He drops a stone from the window at an initial moment, we can ignore air resistance so that we can assume the stone continues its trajectory influenced only by gravity. After some time, the stone hits the bottom of the pit producing a sound, this is the second moment in our problem. Then the sound propagates from the bottom of the pit while the car is still crossing the bridge, until it reaches the man's ears at a final time in our problem. Assuming we know the initial moment of the stone being dropped and the final moment of the man hearing the sound is 5.8 seconds after he dropped the stone: a) what is the angle that the vertical forms with the line joining the initial and the final points in the trajectory of the stone? b) can we calculate how far moved the car at the moment when the stone hits the bottom of the pit? c) what distance did the car travel when the stone hits the bottom of the pit? d) what additional distance did the car travel when the man hears the sound? e) how deep is the pit? f) what is the angle between the vertical and the direction along which the sound travelled to reach the man in the car?
