Coffee has 100% become a ritual for me and I'm definitely one of those who go to bed looking forward to waking up and making my coffee.

I love this. Your reviews and how-to's are great, don't get me wrong, but it is wonderful to hear you talk about WHY you do any of this. How you do anything is how you do everything. The ritual of coffee, and the enjoyment of both the process and the result can really have a wide ranging impact if applied to other aspects of life.

Thank you so much for this comment, and we totally agree. The seemingly little things go a long way in transforming your life to one that's lived with intentionality.

Great video. I do this every day, I knew I enjoyed making my own coffee more than drinking it but I never understood the reason behind it. Brewing coffee = meditation, that's something I didn't think of, thanks for explaining it.

This goes well beyond coffee--you said a great many things I needed to hear today. Thank you, sincerely.

Probably my favorite video this month. You explained why I love playing around with coffee in a way I didn't even realise. I'm not into yoga etc, but have been doing things in a logical/intuitive mixed way forever (playing guitar, mixing live sound). Manual espresso is so much fun, feeling the resistance of the beans in de grinder, the puck breaking down during the shot, almost every sense gets involved in the process. Thanks for pointing out the obvious. Now I really want to send you some of our coffee! 😉

This is such an articulate video about the topic. And, I don't know if you're aware, you also liberate certain folks like myself, who are still "anxious" to get more in-depth into coffee as a non-professional, where at times we question ourselves if we're being too snobbish about coffee but at the same time still have no clue on "what do you mean by honey pineapple and buttery mouthfeel??" I watched Hoffmann's cupping video that encouraged us to just do/try it without much burden, but what you did here literally gave me goosebumps. So, so, spot on. And liberating. Thank you.

Loved this video! The KZbin algorithm decided it was time to show me this video, while coincidentally I've been meditation for around a month now and also started waking up early to have time for establishing a personal routine. I also just started reading Atomic Habits! It knows too much! On another note. Hearing people passionate about coffee is fascinating, I've learned a ton from both this channel and a few other ones. I have a new hobby, which definitely serves me as a quick break during long days. Have a great day, M.A.

A lot of these ideas I learned a few years ago from our sports psychologist in college. Using your awareness to help you better engage with small tasks you take on everyday can help you put your best foot forward in all activities, not just making coffee. :)

Absolutely! It's why we wanted to be clear that this can be applied to other rituals too - we've just found one we love with coffee :).

beautifully articulated. i needed this reminder since i have abandoned my coffee brewing ritual for the past few days and ive crammed meetings in that time. and the past few days havent been great. time to start the ritual again.

Thanks so much for the comment. We all slip up at times, and life gets the better of us, but the amazing thing is being aware of your go-to ritual helps us get back on track quickly. This video was a little reminder to ourselves too. :)

Love this! My morning coffee routine is definitely meditative, but I've never thought to look at the beans before. Even just learning the couple tidbits you shared here was fascinating and motivating. Would love to hear more about what we can glean by looking at the bean itself! Thanks for your fantastic videos.

Absolutely loved this! I totally agree with having a dedicated space and time, just being present in that moment. Personally I even paid attention to how coffee weighs( initially with a scale), we can approximately get right weight with intuition and practice. I also don't time now as I feel my inner natural feeling of time helps me brew better.

I’ve said on your Instagram, but I’ll say it here again. I am SO happy I found out about you (bless you James Hoffman)! Even though I am brewing my pour-overs for over 5 years now and it’s already a ritual in my daily routine, I still took some new insights from your video. I am already starting to slowly deepen my coffee brewing practice by writing things down and overall paying more attention. This is also connected to me wanting to perfect my brews and becoming more involved in the community, but I see how writing it down can also help the practice side of things. Again, quality content! Thank you for sharing it!

Thank you so much for your comment! We are eternally grateful to James Hoffmann too, to have found such a wonderful audience :) Yes, it's definitely a lifelong journey, and we're learning something new everyday. And when we slip up sometimes, or get caught up with life, these serve as nice little reminders to ourselves too.

Really really wonderful video! I've been meditating for 2 years and have been brewing pourover for 1. This put into words what I couldn't about the whole process, it really puts you in a wonderful headspace
@aramse3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for that! That's awesome. And yes, it took us a lot of experimenting and trying different things to get to this point too. My love affair with meditation started about 10 years ago, and though I drank coffee all those years, putting the two together only began about 3 years ago. It is a lifelong journey of learning.

Somewhat ironically I brewed my manual espresso while watching this video, but I think there's valuable information I still got from it (the coffee was pretty good too).

Thanks so much for the comment! That's awesome that you brewed to this video :) It was meant to be a cheatsheet that can be applicable to any brew - we just used the V60 as an example. Simpler brews to get to the manual espresso was mostly if people had starting trouble with a more elaborate workflow. Haha, glad the coffee was enjoyable after all that :)

Thank you very much for this one! I'm currently learning a lot about mindfulness and experienced the same today when I brewed a V60 in the afternoon. It's almost as in Gongfu tea brewing, going step by step, doing every step conciously and with attention to details. When drinking espresso I like to sniff at the empty cup to once more appreciate the aromas of the precious beans. At work I use to drink coffee without much awereness but at home I usually take my time and try to appreciate the experience as a whole.
@aramse3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I love the idea of reminding yourself of the process one last time even after you've finished your espresso. Tea has long been associated with ritualistic brewing - like the Japanese tea ceremony, and there's so much of that we can incorporate into coffee brewing. Being aware of what we consume has such far reaching effects, including paying attention to quality, how much we consume and where we source from. Thanks so much for your comment.

Thanks so much for this comment. We always wanted to bring a holistic approach to coffee brewing, one that's driven by ways of getting the most out of the experience. Ultimately we'd love to contribute in our own small way to making coffee brewing both inclusive and enriching. We are super glad you enjoyed this content. Re: processing techniques, that's a great idea and something we've been toying with too. We are working on what the best way of synthesising that information would be.
@jshaan753 жыл бұрын
It can be meditative but then cleaning the grinder is quite a toil. It can make you feel good if the workflow is smooth, or else it's just a convoluted process.
@aramse3 жыл бұрын
Yup it’s definitely important to have a proper workflow, hence the repeatable steps. Grinding cleaning can be a pain but it’s only something that needs to be done once in a while so it wouldn’t be part of your daily ritual.
@aramse3 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right, a well ironed out workflow is super important. It's why we mention repeatable steps, so that you're doing things in the same order each time, it almost becomes second nature.

This is a wonderful way of elevating the joy of coffee to a whole different level. I love making coffee manually, from hand grinding to handfilter or South Indian Filter to foaming milk with a French press. I never rushed it because I enjoy this experience so much. But in the last months I tend to squeeze the coffee making time into the 15 minutes between two meetings and rush through it. So your video really helped recognizing this. Because to be honest as much as I enjoy the cup of coffee, I also enjoy the making process. Sadly I cannot clear out a space permanently , but I will incorporate clearing the same place every day and setting everything up for coffee making, so as not to look through drawers and so on. That could be a good alternative. Do you clean your equipment during the ritual or sometime after that?

Thank you so much for your comment and we're so glad you enjoyed it. I have been down the wonderfully articulate Sam Harris rabbit hole too, and Waking Up was so enjoyable :) My journey with mindfulness meditation began exactly 10 years ago with drop in classes at the London Buddhist Centre. Thich Nhat Hanh has written some really simple, actionable books too. Small mindset changes can be so empowering, and this video was a little reminder to ourselves too.
