The deranged German officer furious to be caught by the elderly and foolish rag tag group manages to slip away to the back whilst his men are all caught or killed, screaming as he takes ol' jones captive. Mannering won't let one of his men die and offers to take jones place as the hostage, jones insists captain Mainwaring shoots the Jerry. As tensions rise as the jerrys backed into the door, pews piled up as barricades, staring wide eyed at the serious face of Captain Mainwaring. Only for the door to open outwards, the pews to fall forward, as the day is saved when Godfrey comes in, "Oh I'm terribly sorry" he says to the officer as he's pinned to the floor by the pews. The lads crowding a shocked Jones who slowly takes down his beret to reveal a hole poking through it from where the officer shot. I love the little Dad's Army figures. Were those an 'official' off the shelf product or were they just made for this video? I do love the swapping of characters as well, even if it's a bit of a cheat. Kinda works like an old school continuity error, like the episode 'Things that go bump in the night' where the exterior scenes have Private Walker but not the studio scenes due to those being filmed after the actor, James Beck's, death.

Private Fraser was a sniper! Part of his back story was that whilst a petty officer in the RN in WW1 his job was to to explode sea mines by shooting at them with his rifle from a mine sweeper standing off at a safe distance . However, it meant that on land he had to simulate the roll of a ship whenever he shot.

What I really appreciate about the "X hours of game in 30 minutes" format is that it's really good at showing off a game. You get JUST enough snippets of actual play to get an understanding of the mechanics of the game without it dragging on. AND with the retelling you get the Story of the game. The fun more cinematic version the players imagined in their heads. I haven't played many war games and they've always seemed difficult to get into but these videos get me excited to try! Informative and very fun.

In reality most 'Home Guard' units were on a par with conscripted regulars. They were mostly made up of WW1 veterans aged between 40 and 60 and younger men in reserved occupations. They trained 20 hours a week or so as well as doing their full time jobs. BUT we all love the romance of Dad's Army and so this game was a joy to watch. Can we please have more of these sort of scenarios. The idea of the early Dad's army figures portrayed as 'Rotarians' was inspired.

Dad's Army I think highlights two great things about WW2 era Britain - our undying sense of humour, which stood both as the mark of what you can enjoy in a free country compared to the Nazi yoke, and quite frankly helped our people through some of the darkest days of the war (hence cafe damaged by a bomb putting up a sign saying that they're 'More open than usual') and also the strange double nature of WW2 Britain being at once a powerhouse and an ad hoc mess
