Can Dota 2 Have a Good Tutorial?

Dota 2 is a notoriously difficult game to pick up and play. But does it have to be this way? Can Dota 2 have a good tutorial?

Great job! I totally agree with you that Dota is a _really_ complex game. I have no idea how I'd construct a tutorial for this. I love Dota, but I feel like I learned how to play from osmosis and because I had a good friend who showed me the ropes!

TCG's actually have invented a great way to teach players years ago. MTG, LoR, Yo-Gi-Oh and probably many others let you play with tutorials for individual mechnics. Hearthstone kinda made it's own tutorial for expirienced ones with it's labs. Ofc, not all of these concepts are easily translated to moba, but some are. And I genuinely think that modular tutorials is *the* way to go. Just like Celeste and some other games have dealt with difficulty problems, I think many games can deal with tutorials: let the players choose what they want to learn. And if they are too unfamiliar to choose on their own - start with basics. I think that the idea of “stop trying to think for your players and let them” is going to revolutionize game design in the years to follow

Bad video. A dota 2 player being reasonable, not yelling and not having a swear word every other sentence? I literally can not listen to you. In serious terms though, when you were trying to show how complex dota 2 was you explained wayy too much, if I was a new player I would have been atleast able to understand what you were saying and I mean, you cant do that! I feel a singleplayer campaign would be perfect for dota, like how sstarcraft 2 does. even if some people may skip over it, it would be extremely useful

Great video! and completely agree! I think there is one more thing that could help a lot to get new players besides a good tutorial. Up until Guardian rank (maybe even higher) Valve should give players 5mmr for participation (win or lose). That way you separate the new players from the rest and they can learn without being constantly flamed. Also, experienced players don't have to play with ppl that just ruin their game from the start by feeding, etc..

I quit Dota because I couldn't lock the camera. I came from Diablo 1 & 2, and when I started playing LoL, I could lock the camera and I just got used to it. I would constantly unlock it to look around (I had it hotkeyed) but would lock back to myself when in combat or stressful situations. I moved onto HotS when it released and did the same thing, constantly toggling lock on and off. I think I'd enjoy Dota if I was able to lock it, and I don't see why it's so hard for Valve to just implement it as an option for players like me that would use it.
